Autumn cord? Where are the good bits?

I fancy some soft, rich-coloured cord for autumn - where would be good to look?
I love this which someone posted on another dress but the shape would.be awful on me.
And I tried on a navy dress in fatface which was also perfect colour but had ruffles round the neck 🤨

Great cord minis at nobody’s child. Green with big buttons and one with little pockets.

backoffbuster · 16/09/2023 17:33

I like the nobody’s child cord dress, but it looks short. I need something a bit longer these days, but everything seems too long or too short.

IhearyouClemFandango · 16/09/2023 18:12

Hush have had some great baby cord dresses the last few years.

YouSetTheTone · 16/09/2023 19:32

I have the dress in the op’s first post! It’s really nice. It’s softer and slightly thinner than I thought it would be so it doesn’t seem too stiff or bulky on. It’s a gorgeously autumnal green and I think I’ll wear it a lot. Useful on both the school run and my office.

Does anyone find cord skirts or dresses ride up when worn with tights? All skirts and dresses seem to be unlined these days. Do we have to look for the old-fashioned half slips?

I buy the cool comfort half slips and full slips from M&S. They're very cool and don't stick to your legs.

MarieKlepto · 16/09/2023 23:24

Has anyone spotted cord jeggings anywhere? I've been looking for a couple of weeks now. The M&S style cord leggings are ok but I'm looking for something thicker. (Can't do button fly at the moment due to upcoming surgery).

Has anyone seen a midi dress or top in a bright pink or burnt orange under £100? I saw one White Stuff dress- and I normally hate their clothes- in a lovely dark orange but sold out. All the dresses appear to be navy or green, or mini skirts/pinnies.

Igneococcus · 19/09/2023 11:46

I'm looking for that Hobbs skirt from Labbington's post but in longer, midi or mid-axis, in any autumnal colour or black. I've seen some but they all have a visible zip like jeans skirts have and I'd prefer one without.

CharlotteRumpling · 19/09/2023 12:00

I just discovered a chocolate brown vintage cord jacket stowed away in my cupboard. I hardly ever wear brown next to my face. What should I wear it with? A white tshirt and dark jeans maybe? and a colourful scarf?

Sagittariusrising · 19/09/2023 16:18

I've just ordered This midi skirt from Monsoon in the blue today. If I like it I might get the purple one as well.

Sounds perfect, I can't wear white because A) It makes me look too pink and B) I'm too clumsy and it'd have food down it within minutes of wearing. I love other people in a crisp white top though.

Carpediem15 · 19/09/2023 19:27

If anyone is going to buy the wide legged cords from M & S beware of the sizing. I bought the Chocolate ones last week-end and went in today and just picked a black pair from the rack and bought them. Got them home and I can't fasten the waist, about 2" smaller than the brown ones and the bum is tighter, going down the leg they are about 1" wider. Got to make a special journey to take them back, not amused.

WashableVelvet · 19/09/2023 20:02

@rhiannon1967 what colours do you wear with the bitter chocolate? I’ve just bought a vintage leather midi skirt that colour (the newspapers tell me leather midis are also in this season)

rhiannon1967 · 19/09/2023 20:22

@WashableVelvet I would go with a white top, or more likely an off-white, cream or ecru. I've also got a cream shirt with brown stripes which is perfect. Then either a cream blazer, or a tan, or a brown tweedy check. Or a chunky knit in chocolate or cream or beige.

I follow Lydia Tomlinson on Youtube and she puts brown with black, which initially I wouldn't have thought of doing, but it does look good!

I think this sort of autumnal tweed would be perfect.

Pigtailsandall · 19/09/2023 21:48

I think red also goes well with brown, as does a mustardy yellow.

@rhiannon1967 that blazer looks lovely but it's all acrylic and polyester like most of m&s sadly

Cantonet · 19/09/2023 22:05

@WashableVelvet I'm planning on wearing these attached with my M&S cords. Also faux leather shirts in tan & black plus a cream faux leather jacket.

Cantonet · 19/09/2023 22:07

@Carpediem15 I had exactly the same sizing problem today too with those cords.

rhiannon1967 · 19/09/2023 22:14

@Pigtailsandall Yes. I think that's the sort of fabric you get now for that sort of price point. You need to go to Cos, Arket, Other Stories, Massimo Dutti to get a better fabric and even some of their wool blends are blended with polyester. Or yet higher end I guess for pure wool. Although Arket do a pure wool blazer - the hopsack blazer, which is nice, but very thin.

minipie · 19/09/2023 22:30

Uniqlo are doing their sling bag in cord now here I just bought the olive one. The dark orange is a lovely rich tan colour, not really orange.

I have the orange one, it's lovely but wouldn't describe it as tan at all, very much a deep burnt orange. Is it maybe the brown you saw?

Pigtailsandall · 20/09/2023 08:54

I bought the orange uniqlo cord bag as soon as it hit the shops and it's very much burnt orange. I love it. I'm considering the chocolate brown too but realistically I don't need two!

@rhiannon1967 Yes, you are right. I've tried the Arket blazer on a few times and this autumn might be the time I buy it. It is quite thin but because it's wool it's warm. I'm thinking of layering it with a thin-knit cashmere and I think it'll see me quite far into the autumn

minipie · 20/09/2023 10:14

Hmm maybe it was the brown I saw! It was a nice rich brown, much warmer than the brown looks on the website so I assumed it was the orange… guess not!
