What the hell will I wear if I can't wear Skinny Jeans or trainers?

Just a guess.

Other things.

Maybe.

And why do skinny jeans always be have to be 'prised from cold dead hands'?

I'm not being a dick, but when the question 'what does one wear in winter if not skinny jeans?' Comes up again.

The answer is: Anything. Yes, I get that the skinny jeans lovers all came of age in the late 90s when ridoncolous jeans were ubiquitous.

It's not binary wide jeans bad/skinny jeans good.

All jeans are good.

If you like jeans.

Not this again.

BishopBrennansArseHole · 12/09/2023 23:33

What a pointless post.

Galiana · 12/09/2023 23:35

Ok. Good.

Then we're agreed?

OP posts:
NatashaDancing · 13/09/2023 01:53

It's simultaneously pointless and bang on point.

Galiana · 13/09/2023 02:53

The obvious answer is...

Skirts or dresses!

Jeans are not Winter wear.

Who wants wet legs?

WellPlaced · 13/09/2023 03:16

I don’t like jeans

Galiana · 13/09/2023 03:19

Obviously @WellPlaced!

But this is a discussion forum, to, you know, ask questions and discuss things.
It's really just like saying 'I'm in a rut with my weekday dinners, can people tell me what they cook apart from spag bol, to give me some ideas'.

Answering with 'just cook anything else, there are lots of foods that aren't spag bol' isn't really what the poster is looking for.

It's fine if you think it's a pointless question that they are asking. But obviously they don't think it's pointless, or they wouldn't be asking it. And the other people who share their ideas and then discuss them also don't think it's pointless.

If every post on Mumsnet was assessed according to 'would someone out there think this was pointless' and deleted if the answer was yes, then there would be no Mumsnet.

If every real life conversation was shut down because someone somewhere thinks it's pointless, then there would be no conversations.

So obviously, if you think it's pointless, you shouldn't feel obliged to join in. But people who are finding it useful should surely be allowed to chat about it.

Galiana · 13/09/2023 04:10

Aha! I do think that about food too @MaybeSeven!

What should I eat?

Jeans aren't winter wear?!

I understand that in big chunks of the UK, winter = pissing down rain all the time just like the other seasons really but that's not the case everywhere.

I think it might be because there are two camps. Those that are evangelical about only wearing what's in style currently, and those that wear what suits their body shape and feels good whether it's 'in' or 'out' right at this minute.

For someone like me, the latter, the absolute insistence on this board that trends must be followed or it's a huge faux pas/fashion disaster by some in the former group is a bit Confused I get kind of torn between, 'wait, so I should wear something that I don't even look good in because the fashion world happens to say I should this week?' But also, 'shit, other people are clearly way more stylish than me.'

I just can't give the angst headspace to looking at my wardrobe to decide what to wear and working out what currently looks 'dated'...

RebeccaCloud9 · 13/09/2023 05:07

Tell you what's not winter wear: any of the stupid wide/long/flared/bootcut jeans we wore in our youth. Soaking upwards from the floor🤢. Skinny/slim leg jeans are perfectly fine in winter. I don't care that younger people tell me they are not in fashion. I have lived through my era of wearing crap I hate because of fashion. I now wear what I want. Let them grow up and realise the happiness in that ☺️

This. Jeans very much are winter wear here, they are not summer wear as it's too hot.

ScarlettSunset · 13/09/2023 07:04

I don't wear skinny jeans ever as they just look stupid on me. I don't like mum jeans either.
I much prefer a straight leg or bootcut jean for the simple fact that they suit my shape.
But if jeans were banned forever, there are still alternatives. I'm currently trying to decide whether to get some moleskin trousers which I think also look quite flattering and come in a wider variety of colours. I also love a knitted dress in the cooler months.
I live in boots year round which I wear with anything.

howshouldibehave · 13/09/2023 07:09

Jeans are not Winter wear

What a ridiculous thing to say 😂

Lentilweaver · 13/09/2023 08:04

Jeans or cords are very much winter wear for me.They always will be for millions of women.

Floisme · 13/09/2023 08:20

I think you're being very naughty, op. But you've made me laugh.

And if this is a thread for controversial opinions, mine is that skinnies are awful in heavy rain because they stick to the leg, leaving you feeling cold and clammy for ages afterwards.

meanderingbrook · 13/09/2023 08:32

Not if they are pleather ones @Floisme 😉

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 13/09/2023 08:37

I think it might be because there are two camps. Those that are evangelical about only wearing what's in style currently, and those that wear what suits their body shape and feels good whether it's 'in' or 'out' right at this minute.

There's also the 3rd camp (although maybe I'm the only camper) who wear what they like that feels comfortable/weather appropriate. Even if its not trendy or "suits their body type".
According to threads on here, as a short fat person, I shouldn't wear skinny jeans. Or trainers. Or wide fit trousers. Or probably a million other things. Yet I do. I'm short and fat. I look short and fat no matter what I wear. So I wear what I like.

Lentilweaver · 13/09/2023 08:46

Where I am, it's never so pissing down that I can't wear jeans. Though I wear straight or wide leg. And yes, it's too hot to wear them in summer.

Wishimaywishimight · 13/09/2023 08:47

Why would you have "wet legs"? Do skinny jeans wearers not have coats? Umbrellas?

Goodornot · 13/09/2023 08:48

I find opaque tights to be warmer than jeans. Tyey dry quicker too. Plenty of choice with what to wear with those. Skirts, warmer dresses etc.

Goodornot · 13/09/2023 08:49

Wishimaywishimight · 13/09/2023 08:47

Unless the coat reaches the floor you're going to get wet. Ankles, calves etc.

Floisme · 13/09/2023 08:50

Is that to me? Once they're wet, it spreads up my leg, past where my coat / jacket begins. (It does rain quite a lot here.)

Floisme · 13/09/2023 08:51

And no I don't use an umbrella, because they're fricking useless in the wind. But that would need a thread all of its own.
