What the hell will I wear if I can't wear Skinny Jeans or trainers?

Just a guess.

Other things.

Maybe.

And why do skinny jeans always be have to be 'prised from cold dead hands'?

I'm not being a dick, but when the question 'what does one wear in winter if not skinny jeans?' Comes up again.

The answer is: Anything. Yes, I get that the skinny jeans lovers all came of age in the late 90s when ridoncolous jeans were ubiquitous.

It's not binary wide jeans bad/skinny jeans good.

All jeans are good.

If you like jeans.

Segue @Goodornot which tights do you recommend for warmth, please?

Flyinggeesei234 · 13/09/2023 09:09

When did S&B become such a humourless board. OP is being somewhat lighthearted, I think, to spark a discussion.

Why the AIBU type responses?!

I am a skinny jeans lover and am wearing my favourites right now, but get that it’s not a binary choice.

Love the idea of a few other ideas for winter beyond ‘dress, tights and boots’ - which can also be fab.

I like the M&S opaques I think they're called body sensor. 60 denier and over I find them pretty warm.

Shame on you, skinny jeans are not a subject for humour. This is a fight to the death.

Lentilweaver · 13/09/2023 09:22

I get the humour. I am just worried that Batsheva will make an appearance soon as suggested winter wear. Ever-present danger in recent times.

Tell you what's not winter wear: any of the stupid wide/long/flared/bootcut jeans we wore in our youth. Soaking upwards from the floor🤢. Skinny/slim leg jeans are perfectly fine in winter. I don't care that younger people tell me they are not in fashion. I have lived through my era of wearing crap I hate because of fashion. I now wear what I want. Let them grow up and realise the happiness in that ☺️

I remember when I was at university 20 years ago we used to measure the water line up our ultra wide jeans to see who had the highest!

Sod that!

To those saying skinny jeans result in wet legs in the rain, how does any other kind of jean keep you dry?? Surely if you're gonna get wet you're gonna get wet?

They all get wet in the rain, it's what happens next that's the issue.

I've always found a looser fit feels more comfortable when wet because they don't cling to my leg. Back in the days when I worked in an office and therefore had to wear them all day, skiinnies would feel wet and clammy and uncomfortable the longest.

This is a scientific, peer reviewed fact but I did warn you that it's controversial.

Drews · 13/09/2023 09:43

I think they look great but I don't wear them because its such a faff getting them on and off. They're not light straight legs give a little kick and they fall off keeping hold of the wasitband and you fling them into the washing pile. Skinnys you have peel and contort stanidng on one leg or fall onto the floor.

pepino · 13/09/2023 10:14

Just wear what you want!

Floisme · 13/09/2023 10:24

pepino · 13/09/2023 10:14

Just wear what you want!

I'm afraid that is not allowed.
You must either follow fashion or wear what suits you.
No other options are possible.
I didn't make the rules.

Flyinggeesei234 · 13/09/2023 10:56

Fair point! OK I’m wearing mine so they can’t be physically prised away (from my cold, dead blah blah) by the fashion police.

Flyinggeesei234 · 13/09/2023 11:00

Seriously though. What? I love the look/idea of flared or wide legged very cropped (culotte length) trousers with a very fine knit top and high slim fit boots.

This kind of look:

Flyinggeesei234 · 13/09/2023 11:02

Oh, try again.

What the hell will I wear if I can't wear Skinny Jeans or trainers?
Lentilweaver · 13/09/2023 11:19

Thanks @Goodornot. Will try.

Obviously @WellPlaced!

I never realised it was so obvious

User19543785 · 13/09/2023 11:45

Skinny jeans are quite cold to wear so not really suitable for winter anyway. I tend to wear warmer trousers

User19543785 · 13/09/2023 11:48

I don’t wear any jeans in the winter, wide or skinny

Katiepoes · 13/09/2023 12:02

Has nobody asked their 'teen' or Zone 1 based fashionista sister-in-law yet? They know it all and shall be obeyed.

(My own teen lives in skinny flares and owns not one top that reaches her waist. She will be very sorry come January)

I hope those trousers suit your body shape, otherwise I am very sorry to tell you that this too is in contravention of the rules.

NatashaDancing · 13/09/2023 13:18

Jeans are terrible winter wear. No insulation and they don't dry well.

They're terrible in summer too. Too thick and not breathable.

UkeleleUnicycle · 13/09/2023 13:22

Waterproof trousers all round then !

happyshineyperson · 13/09/2023 13:33

I don’t really get the whole “wide legs soak up water to the knee thing”. Of course I understand the phenomenon, and experienced it in the early 2000s when I last wore wide leg jeans. But now as an actual grown up… wouldn’t you just make sure the jeans don’t touch the floor? I think when I was 16 I didn’t really understand the concept of alterations. Now I do and I’m sharing it here as my PSA for the day 😉

DiscoBeat · 13/09/2023 13:33

Unless the coat reaches the floor you're going to get wet. Ankles, calves etc.

That's where long boots come in. Or wellies, for walking. So useful that skinny jeans fit inside!

meanderingbrook · 13/09/2023 13:33

@UkeleleUnicycle and the skinny high street version is pleather skinnies! Something which I have been enjoying immensely in recent years - don't get wet but don't feel daft walking into a high street restaurant like I would in full on walking gear.
