Cost of Blacks returns

Has it always been like this or have I been living under a rock? Last time I returned stuff to Blacks I sent DH into store because it was the last day but I am surprised that they don’t even have a free Royal Mail option! Just booked an Evri pickup for M&S for free which makes the £9.98 Blacks are trying to charge seem even stingier!

Lots of shops are charging for returns now as it's costs them so much .
There are much cheaper options there and loads . Why not just choose a cheaper one and drop it off on your way to work or something?

JanesBlond · 12/09/2023 23:05

@floofbag I will take it back in person, I can’t bring myself to pay for a return. This is the first time I’ve seen non free returns (for within the U.K.) and was shocked!

New Look has started to charge for returns now too

JanesBlond · 12/09/2023 23:13

Good to know, another one to avoid!

Bring back the high street I say!

With free parking.

bellamountain · 12/09/2023 23:27

@goingtotown I'd honestly find it more convenient.

floofbag · 13/09/2023 15:59

The returns cost the companies soo much money so they have to stop people spending as if it's a hobby then returning it all.

I just take it all back to store , the business'won't survive if they didn't do something to cut it back a bit .

JanesBlond · 13/09/2023 16:35

We always walk into town so parking isn’t a concern. I just find it easier to shop online in terms of trying stuff on at a convenient hour, easier to search for specific things, and they usually have a bigger range of sizes online. In this case I was ordering stuff for DH and if I drop it in his lap at home he’ll try it on but like hell will he go shopping in town on a Saturday!

I thought they could either charge for returns or delivery.

Talkng it back to store for free isn’t always an option. I’ve been ill for a year and couldn’t do this.

User19543785 · 13/09/2023 16:50

Blacks returns have always been quite expensive as I can remember using 'The returns on us' from PayPal and always using PayPal to pay, just in case. Unfortunately PayPal has stopped this now. Next Directory used to be free returns if you paid for the yearly delivery but that is not included now also. I usually try to buy from somewhere where there is a store nearby to take returns back to.

JanesBlond · 13/09/2023 17:00

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow Sorry to hear about your illness. They charge £4.95 for delivery below £80 as well but weirdly they don’t have any expedited delivery options they could charge more for (they claim to, but they are never actually available on the website)

They can charge for either, or both. It’s up to them.

I’m more likely to buy if they offer free returns.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/09/2023 17:19

They are suppos s to refund delivery costs though.

Oakbeam · 13/09/2023 22:08

I’m pretty sure that’s optional too unless the item is faulty.

No, it’s enshrined in the distance selling regulations. If you return an item you should be refunded delivery costs. This is why returns are often free. It saves refunding the delivery costs. It’s to allow for the ‘cooling off’ period.

This is what l meant by saying either returns or delivery should be free. If you are being charged for both then you are being screwed. If you demand they refund it.

AromanticSpices · 15/09/2023 10:08

"Distance selling" cooling off is only 14 days. Outside of this you might still be able to return goods but you are not covered by the distance selling laws.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/09/2023 13:04

I meant within the 14 days.
