Wearing a black dress to a wedding, yay or nay?

A couple of friends got married a few months ago with just their close family and have now invited us to their 'wedding' party. It in a couple of weeks. My main question is - can you wear a black dress to a wedding. I dont have many dresses and most of them are black. I know that you shouldnt wear white one or red ones - and am assuming a black one is also not appropriate. It's semi-formal so no suits. If it makes any difference we're all mid-40s and this is the start of the second marriages round so actually not been to a wedding in about five years or so. What do others think?

I had this quandary and checked with the bride and she didn't care. It's probably fine but check if you're unsure

I think it’s fine for a party, you could add some coloured accessories.

It's not as bad as white, and red is generally fine now, but I wouldn't unless it has a pattern or something on to break it up. I was at a wedding the other day and two women were wearing black slip dresses, it just didn't look right.

Edit - somehow missed the part that it's a party and not the full wedding. In that case (assuming it's just an evening thing) it's probably fine

Yes, it's just an evening thing and the dress itself is fairly long and wide so not a 'sexy' dress or anything. Was planning on wearing it with some red shoes and other accessories.

It’s fine. But not with red shoes.

Of course you can. Anyone who thinks you’re “in mourning” for your lost love the bride or groom is painfully old fashioned or just being difficult.

For what it’s worth, I wasn’t aware of this so-called rule until using MN so have worn black to every wedding I’ve ever been to as an adult, including my own. Nothing has ever been said other than compliments.

@BirdiePlantaganet what shoes would you suggest? I was only going to fear flat pointed ballet pumps.

Ask whichever of the couple you know better.

I wore a black dress to the last wedding I went to. Several other people did too! What's the problem with red shoes? I think that sounds like a good combo👠!
