Grown up goth

Hello all, I'm hoping for some suggestions for brands to look into. I've recently got a pretty good promotion and would like to start investing in a capsule wardrobe of nice quality. I'm early 30's but never really grew out of my goth stage. I love Victorianna and Edwardian inspired clothing along with some rockabilly and trad goth pieces. I'm tall, size 14, hourglass but with the upper arms of a walrus dinner-lady.
Now that I have a bit of money to spend I've found a lot of the brands I coveted when younger (Killstar, Spin Doctor, Hell Bunny and even Collectif) are actually a bit ropey on quality. I want natural materials if possible and nice cuts. Any ideas for brands to check out or even just pieces from non-alternative brands (very much not a snob about that kind of thing).

Thank you!

I think All Saints have some nice bits, they don't stock my size unfortunately.

NotMadeOfStone · 05/09/2023 22:05

Watching this with interest! Corporate Goth is my favourite look and I need new ideas 😁

toucaninjapan · 06/09/2023 08:27

Sezane for Victorian and Edwardian style

headcheffer · 06/09/2023 08:32

Wolf and Badger! They have some lovely bits that could easily be very classy grown up goth.

QueefofSheena · 06/09/2023 10:29

This is the sort of thing I wear, I've been buying things from Vinted lately for autumn/winter. Black fitted clothes, velvet etc. Disturbia blazers are generally good for the price and some of their other stuff. One of their kilts screams Vivienne Westwood but I'm not sure it's still available.

I covet the Drunken Sailor jacket from Vivienne Westwood but it's spendy and my huge norks wouldn't suit it. Punk Rave and Dracula Clothing have a few good pieces. The Punk Rave steampunk jacket is more versatile than it looks on the website. I have it in striped and black.

SideEyeSally · 06/09/2023 19:56

Thank you for the suggestions! Looking into them. I really love this dress from Disturbia though it doesn't really fit into any of the styles I described :D

I've never bought from Punk Rave because I'm weary of Asian sizing. Have you found they fit to UK concepts of s/m/l/xl?

That dress is nice. They also have a nice one that's plain black (or a bottle green I think) with snakes on the collar.

SnowflakeCity · 06/09/2023 21:30

Does anyone know what the quality is like on the dresses from disturbia? I see a few absolutely love! I've been struggling with not feeling like me a lot lately but some of those dresses are very 'me'.

I've found that they definitely run small

Zipps · 06/09/2023 23:09

I love the clothes Vanessa wears on Penny Dreadful and I think you can get some similar/replicas on Etsy/eBay etc Don't know how wearable they actually are or the quality but could you have one or two things made by a seamstress/tailor if you have some money?

Notoironing · 06/09/2023 23:15

Try EMF

KaarijasBowlCut · 06/09/2023 23:34

I have a couple of suggestions but can't actually vouch for either as I haven't bought from them yet!

https://www.sdeer.com/en-gb
https://aocfashion.com/

Both have some really interesting stuff.

I have bought from Disturbia before and have generally found the quality decent and the customer service good.

Looking forward to seeing what other suggestions folk have. 🖤

PS Edited to add, excuse this large spam-like S.DEER image! 🤦‍♀️

This is not a style I’ve ever consciously ascribed to, so I’m not quite sure if there’s more to it (in the 21st as opposed to the 20th century) than wearing black clothes and lipstick and looking vaguely confrontational?

The Vampire’s Wife as mentioned above would be an obvious place to start. Very high profile. Probably findable pre-owned if you don’t want to pay those sorts of prices. Also popular on the dress rental circuit.

A considerable step down in expense would be Batsheva. Glorious clothes and inclusive sizing.

For polished deconstruction you could look at Acne Studios. The quality and longevity of their clothes is outstanding.

I’m a big fan of this look, and really you can find it anywhere.
I’ve got things from Vivienne Westwood, The Vampires Wife, Alexander McQueen and Saint Laurent, Balmain and Gucci on the high end, I will keep this forever scale.
Me and Em, All Saints, Cos, Marks and Spencer’s and Boden (goths still need a black cashmere jumper or two) on the more reasonable scale..
High street places like Zara (now on my banned list, but before I banned them) will also do pieces every year.
I’m mulling over O’pioneers in the net a porter sale at the moment- you might like them too?
Second hand I’m very tempted by anything Droopy and Brown- so look for that too.
I’ve built up a collection of goth (ish) theatrical clothes and accessories that can spice up more mundane things, I’m older than you though!

MetaDaughter · 07/09/2023 09:41

Noooooooooo … Now I’ll have to stop everything for a period of wailing and gnashing of teeth and genuine heartbroken sorrow. I adored Droopy and Browns when I lived in a village a short drive from their Bath shop. Breathtakingly beautiful clothes for both country and town wardrobes. The tattersall shirts with huge tie necks! The long wool skirts that trailed on the ground behind you! I thought the brand would last forever - and I’ll never stop regretting how carelessly I let my clothes go …

SnapdragonToadflax · 07/09/2023 10:19

Posting to come back to this later.

Okaydonkey · 07/09/2023 10:30

Droopy and Browns- I used to walk past a shop on my way to school and was determined to get my wedding dress from there- it was not to be 😭
Just stunning

MetaDaughter · 07/09/2023 10:42

I too planned to get a wedding dress there.

Broke up with the man …
