Anyone ever binned their entire wardrobe and started again?

BatsHatIsWonky · 30/08/2023 20:26

I'm in the process of doing just that. Well, the majority of it. I'm keeping ..

My grenson boots
My Gucci trainers
My bostons
My converse
My bird + Wolf camo jacket
Leather jackets
My Levi's jacket
A nice Isabel Marant coat
A Reiss jacket

So basically - my shoes and jackets are being kept!

The rest i can't stand any longer so it's going. 10 bin bags - some selling on eBay, most to charity

I'm guilty of buying for the life I think I should be living and not the life I actually have so it's time to start again,

Have you looked at the curated closet book? Lots about planning for the life you have, not the life you want.
also an amazing thread in mumsnet classics called “thanks to s and b I am winning in the pursuit of elegance” (or something close to that.) Both really good for how to go about planning wardrobe revamps. Good luck!

BatsHatIsWonky · 30/08/2023 20:48

@Notooserious ooh I'll check those out - thank you!

I just have literally dozens of dresses - yet I work from home, go for walks, and go shopping basically so always end up wearing sports wear like sweaty Betty and lululemon - despite not being in the slightest bit sporty. I like a comfortable sports-luxe look

Mainly in my head I think.

No but I'd like to. How much do you plan to spend on starting again?

BatsHatIsWonky · 30/08/2023 21:02

@CantGetABreak well this is it isn't it? Ive been slowly selling on eBay for two weeks and I have some more to go. Adding in a few quid, I think I'd spend £1000 ish. Maybe a little more

I know that's ridiculous and over indulgent but I don't think I could replace a wardrobe with less (of course I could - but not when the mandala leggings I like to look of are £80)

I don't need any jackets or coats. I would buy one pair of trainers probably.

And I've got this stupid obsession with scamp and dude relaxed joggers. Hare everything else they do but I've just binned 3 pairs (so worn out!) and would replace them

I'd be tempted to do this. I'm short and end up with what fits. Wish I could take a tailor shopping so I know what can be altered.

FlorenceTheFerocious · 30/08/2023 21:09

I haven't but I would love to. Need a lottery win or other windfall first! I'll live vicariously through you till then 😄

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 30/08/2023 21:11

I don't understand how someone can suddenly decide they hate everything in their wardrobe.

I can understand if you have recently changed size / shake, or if you have had a complete lifestyle change then you may choose to sell on things you will no longer wear - but everything ?

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 30/08/2023 21:17

I did many years ago after losing weight, and then investing in having my colours and style done.
I got rid of everything except jeans and totally transformed myself.

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 30/08/2023 21:36

I haven't binned everything in my wardrobe, but I did get rid of about 80% of my stuff. Maybe 90%.
I only kept a few outfits that I wore and liked, and then I sold everything else on Ebay and bought a few new things with the money I made. I've never been happier with my clothes! Even though I only have a few things now.

BatsHatIsWonky · 30/08/2023 21:44

@ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea I like my coats and shoes!!

I would love to have the confidence to do this! My shape is so awkward to buy for though.
Good luck and enjoy the shopping 🛍️

Coats and shoes make your outfits, so that’s a fantastic start. I’ve spent the last year selling 80% of my wardrobe and starting afresh. I’ve tried to work out what I really like and what suits me and my lifestyle and I buy the best quality replacements I can afford within my budget. I look for gaps in my wardrobe and hunt for specific items rather than impulse buy. It was the thread in classics linked above which kicked started this whole process for me.

hdbs17 · 31/08/2023 07:54

If I had the money to do so, I would absolutely pay for a colour match service and then buy a whole new capsule wardrobe of high quality clothing that suits my needs.

I'm currently revamping my wardrobe from removing lots of cheaper or shapeless pieces to higher quality pieces but I'm trying to do it all through Vinted where I can, and very slowly. It's very much a one in - one out process currently.

I envy you.

BatsHatIsWonky · 31/08/2023 09:01

@hdbs17 I had a colour analysis done last year and it was really interesting. I honestly had no idea if I was cool or warm toned and in fact, had decided I was cool.

I'm not. I'm very warm. Deep Autumn. Well worth doing

OP posts:
BatsHatIsWonky · 31/08/2023 09:02

@hdbs17 I also buy a fair bit from Vinted - although I'm careful with what I choose. I've had some amazing bargains

OP posts:
cloudcs · 31/08/2023 09:03

That sounds incredibly wasteful.

BatsHatIsWonky · 31/08/2023 09:04

@Noodle421 sounds like you're doing really well with it.

The problem for me is I don't actually think I'm looking for the 'classic basics' if that makes sense

I don't wear white shirts. I don't want a trench coat. I don't want some tan ballet flats.

BatsHatIsWonky · 31/08/2023 09:05

@cloudcs probably not the thread for you then eh? Can't you find a mulberry handbag thread to hang out on? Grin

Why is it not the 'thread for me'?

You asked: 'Anyone ever binned their entire wardrobe and started again?'

So my answer is no I haven't and I feel it is very wasteful.

If you don't like people to disagree with you then maybe mumsnet is not the forum for you.

BatsHatIsWonky · 31/08/2023 09:09

Thanks for your contribution @cloudcs - it's been insightful

@BatsHatIsWonky Great comeback 😂Hope you look ridiculously peng after your transformation.

Floisme · 31/08/2023 09:17

Well you're not binning your entire wardrobe are you? You're keeping lots of good stuff by the looks of it.

The only thing I would say by way of warning is that, if you've gone from loving dresses (whether you actually ever wore them I can't tell) to luxe sportswear then it sounds like you enjoy a complete change of style every so often. As do I. I'm now at the stage of returning to some of my looks from the past and I can't tell you how many things I bitterly regret getting rid of, especially now it's impossible to replicate the same level of quality. I now only move things on when they're either worn out or no longer fit.

However I realise you might not have the space to do that or you might need to sell things to raise money.

chatchatrabbitrabbit · 31/08/2023 09:37

Thanks for this thread OP, i bloody love it. Ignore anyone trying to shit all over it. I only wear about 10% of my wardrobe, the rest can go tbh. I have clothes I love but I won't get into them/ wear them again and haven't worn them for around 10 years. If I got rid of it all, then I'd have almost no wardrobe left but I don't wear it all anyway. I am desperate to get rid of it all. Due to my shape I find it hard to buy/ find clothes that fit. I also need to push myself out of my comfort area and stop buying the same style all the time.
I'm following with interest OP x

FlorenceTheFerocious · 31/08/2023 09:40

I also love it, but think one day I'll do a wuss version to avoid the dreaded Kondo Regret! Like @Floisme, I've had too many times where I've got rid of something and regretted it. I now just put everything in cloth, clothes storage bags in my attic, so I never really get rid of anything (except uncomfortable shoes or anything really ratty)
