Anyone ever binned their entire wardrobe and started again?

I'm in the process of doing just that. Well, the majority of it. I'm keeping ..

My grenson boots
My Gucci trainers
My bostons
My converse
My bird + Wolf camo jacket
Leather jackets
My Levi's jacket
A nice Isabel Marant coat
A Reiss jacket

So basically - my shoes and jackets are being kept!

The rest i can't stand any longer so it's going. 10 bin bags - some selling on eBay, most to charity

I'm guilty of buying for the life I think I should be living and not the life I actually have so it's time to start again,

And stripy tops. I loved stripy tops! I still do but I've sold / charity shopped a lot because there's something wrong with all of them..

Joules ones. Too thick. Feel middle aged and Mumsy in them (nothing wrong with either of those things as I'm both. I just don't want to feel like it in my clothes)

Fat Face stripy tops - see above plus don't like the colour ways

Jigsaw stripe tops a loved them and wore them out. Don't think they do them anymore

Breton - too thick and a bit short

J Crew - too thick

Sainsburys - sleeves too short

And t shirts. I hate all my t shirts as they're either too long, too short, too boxy, have cap sleeves (no) too tight, too high necked, too loose... so I've charity shopped 30 so far

I just have literally dozens of dresses - yet I work from home, go for walks, and go shopping basically so always end up wearing sports wear like sweaty Betty and lululemon

Are you me, OP?!

I had a wardrobe full of dresses (Reiss, Whistles, Hobbs etc) from my days of working in the City & going “out” after work . Then a few things happened: I had a baby, my body changed, I got older, fashions changed, lockdown happened & I now work 99% from home.

I felt lost as the nice dress & heels look suited me and was my signature look.

I’ve slowly been selling off / donating stuff and upgrading my casual wear.

EL8888 · 31/08/2023 21:44

@cloudcs she’s not launching items in the nearest skip or landfill 🙄. She’s selling them on and buying stuff off Vinted. Really not very wasteful

Fishandchipsatthebeach · 31/08/2023 21:51

I ordered one pair of stripe and stare knickers which arrived this morning as I just wanted to see what they were like and how the sizing is with them. I can highly recommend as they're very soft and comfortable so I'll buy some of those in bulk now

I hate my Stripe & Stare pants I wear leggings a lot and they crumple up under them / slide down, hate them

EL8888 · 31/08/2023 21:57

After having twins then l listed about 120 items on eBay and had massive clearout, it felt very cathartic. A lot of it seemed really frumpy and dull. Plus the whole twin pregnancy, breast feeding and newborn phase got the weight off me so a fair bit was too big. I can relate to the striped top obsession @BatsHatIsWonky . For similar reasons l jettisoned a load of mine

Resisterance · 31/08/2023 22:00

Can you Share link for your ebay sales? I wear dresses every day!

Dotcheck · 31/08/2023 22:02

OP
I’m begging you to put your stuff on Vinted….

BatsHatIsWonky · 31/08/2023 22:34

@Fishandchipsatthebeach I wore them today. Don't like them. I couldn't work out if they were too big or too small - they slipped down a bit too.

OP posts:
BatsHatIsWonky · 31/08/2023 22:45

@Dotcheck I just hate selling on vinted! Don't mind buying but can't stand selling as it's so fiddly compared to eBay

MissBiljanaElectronika · 31/08/2023 22:50

I totally get where you are coming from OP!

i had a big clear out last year. I was SICK of the leggings and tunics look (so 2005) and the skinnies and long tops and the jersey dresses and “naice going out tops” that I completely revamped my wardrobe

I bought various baggy jeans and boho baggy trousers, ridiculous jumpers that are wide and short but somehow also are soft and cute, midi denim skirt and a stone wash eighties denim jacket…. Maybe it’s a midlife crisis 😂 but I needed change.

I go through this about once a decade…. I’ve been soft feminine (20s), business woman (30s) classic country woman (40s) and now gone boho/teenager (50s) and I want to burn my Joules/Boden/Fatface/Seasalt collection 😘

BatsHatIsWonky · 31/08/2023 22:50

@Resisterance it's difficult to share my eBay name as I stupidly registered with my social media name

OP posts:
BatsHatIsWonky · 31/08/2023 22:51

@Resisterance just realised that makes it sound like I think I'm famous!! LOL! I'm absolutely not of course but look, I've been slagged off on Tattle a few times and that's practically the same thing right? Grin

Very interesting. My life is one long round of gardening , swimming and walking the dog. I bought a very good coat and boots for the dog walks 2 years ago, and that has helped. I’ve also got over my lifelong aversion to socks by buying posh mens socks(size 8-9 feet). And that is money well spent. I need old clothes for gardening which is fine because I have them. I need easy dresses for swimming, and have them. I probably have enough clothes to see me through the next 5 or 10 years. But I like putting clothes together, I like dressing up, I do sometimes go out, and the thought of purely functional dressing makes me feel really sad. But I cant be doing with wasting money on shit I don’t use and having more clothes than space any more. I’m reading the Curated Closet, and it is interesting, she doesn't recommend styles, and isn’t forcing anyone into a trench coat, but she is keen on quality. Good luck with this, Please keep us updated.

cloudcs · 31/08/2023 09:03

That sounds incredibly wasteful.

Why? She's not burning them. Someone else will get to wear them.

AmazingSnakeHead · 31/08/2023 23:14

I am following with interest as I am planning on doing just this. Except I have it in my head that I'll replace everything except shoes, jeans and coats with handmade clothes. I'm just sick of eveything not fitting right.

nameitagain · 31/08/2023 23:16

BatsHatIsWonky · 31/08/2023 21:33

Thanks for all the insightful and interesting responses.

I've managed to make some decluttering headway today - listed 20 items on eBay and sold 17 of them so far so that's good.

I've now made nearly £800 via eBay selling and I think I can get to the £1000 ish by end of weekend

Can add in a few quid and I'll then be good to go with some replenishing.

I have no idea why I have 3 pairs of Hush harem joggers for example. This is the sort of thing I end up with ... I'm short and although they are very comfortable, I look like MC Hammer in them. I think I bought them in the hope I'd look like the Hush model in them but I didn't.

How much do you sell things for?

BatsHatIsWonky · 31/08/2023 23:24

@MissBiljanaElectronika ooh yes, relatable! I've been all sorts too and it's deciding on what I actually am right now that I'm struggling with.

My husband calls me a fashion victim and he's probably right in that I can be influenced over on Instagram especially.

I've done the tunic dress and leggings and ugg boots

I'm in a phase right now of shearling Birkenstocks, Mandala leggings but can't get the t shirt right so I don't like this look one bit

I do the long dress (usually whistles or hush or fat face) with a leather jacket and biker type boots

I love trainers but they're never quite right either - I have everything from golden goose to adidas Yeezy (which i think we can't wear now!!) along with Stan smiths, Nike internationals (so dull) oh and Skechers slip ons! I wear them for walking where nobody sees me as they're not a great look

I don't think I could pull off boho or baggy. I never wear heels - in fact, I don't even own proper shoes. I look silly in a blazer.

I'll try and find an outfit I liked wearing relatively recently and I'll crop out identifying details! Or at least I felt relatively comfortable in this

BatsHatIsWonky · 31/08/2023 23:30

So this is probably the vibe I aim for. I know it's incredibly boring and not particularly stylish but I think I feel most comfortable in plain ish things that aren't super smart but also not totally basic.

Dunno what you'd call it Grin

@nameitagain depends what it is! Lowest is a tenner I suppose

@Zebracat I think I will read the curated closet!

Reading what you've written reminds me of the time I decided to try a capsule wardrobe.

Well that was depressing! A wardrobe full of the same stuff. So boring and I couldn't get it to work for me at all

You’ve made it to Tattle? Please explain!

Perhaps you are looking for elevated basics ?

@Noodle421 yes, you could be along the right lines with that

It doesn’t have to be boring. Base it on your own style

I bought a complete new wardrobe when I lost a lot of weight. I had won £8k on online bingo & went to Meadowhall shopping centre, I had to buy everything from knickers upward. I spent just over £1k & then treated myself to a complete set of new makeup, perfume & a couple of new handbags. I had so many bags I completely filled the boot of my Fiesta. I went the next day to TK Maxx & bought some leisurewear & I had a further order from Next delivered for things like a couple of light coats, trainers & some more underwear. I went through all my old stuff, sent loads to charity & put anything I wanted to keep in vacuum bags.
