Anyone ever binned their entire wardrobe and started again?

BatsHatIsWonky · 30/08/2023 20:26

I'm in the process of doing just that. Well, the majority of it. I'm keeping ..

My grenson boots
My Gucci trainers
My bostons
My converse
My bird + Wolf camo jacket
Leather jackets
My Levi's jacket
A nice Isabel Marant coat
A Reiss jacket

So basically - my shoes and jackets are being kept!

The rest i can't stand any longer so it's going. 10 bin bags - some selling on eBay, most to charity

I'm guilty of buying for the life I think I should be living and not the life I actually have so it's time to start again,

Wow sounds great @Nat6999

Pondering on taking up bingo 😀

So I didn't like the stripe and stare knickers enough to order more pairs

So I've ordered one pair of seaweed knickers to see if I like them! They're expensive hence just one pair has been purchased for now

I realised I needed new underwear when I looked at the labels on my knickers said Mothercare, I was still wearing maternity ones & ds was 6. The week after my big shop, I traded my husband in for a 20 year younger model, losing weight & feeling better about myself, gave me the kick up the backside to do what made me happy.

BatsHatIsWonky · 01/09/2023 00:00

Blimey! You binned off your husband as well. Bravo to you!

Much as i might like to fantasise about a much younger model, I do have a wonderful husband so I'll have to stick to the wardrobe binning for now

BatsHatIsWonky · 01/09/2023 00:00

And lol at mothercare! That used to be such a great place

I love the curated closet. Best styling book I've read. I really need a big cull. 2 babies in the last 3 years and I'm completely over trying to fit back in my old wardrobe. Not in terms of size but lifestyle.

I'm the same as you, own nearly a hundred dresses but end up living in sweats and DHs jumpers. Weirdly i don't find leggings at all comfortable so can't carry off the athleisure look.

Hawkins0009 · 01/09/2023 01:03

I've trimmed mine to the basics, I usually like military type outfits etc

@EL8888 @nameitagain
In a non-judgemental way I'm just going to explain why it is wasteful despite the fact that she is selling on Vinted.

It's not about what she does with her current clothes (although to be honest Vinted is saturated and should not be used as an excuse for buying fast fashion to 'just sell on Vinted').

The point is that OP is about to needlessly buy a whole wardrobe of new clothes. This is what makes it wasteful.

Making new clothes requires a huge amount of energy per garment and they will most likely be manufactured abroad and shipped around the world.

People do not think about what goes into the production of new clothes that they buy. Google it and you will find out how our obsession with clothing is killing the planet.

If all of the clothes were also being replaced from Vinted then that would be a lot better, but I doubt that's the case. Vinted is great but you can't replace your entire wardrobe from there so OP is going to buy a shed load of brand new stuff which is totally unnecessary.

I'm not going enter into debate because she's obviously made up her mind to do it and good luck to her. But it is objectively wasteful to do this when you have a wardrobe of perfectly good clothes that you are just bored of.

BatsHatIsWonky · 01/09/2023 08:44

Oh god @cloudcs can't you just bore off now? And who's 'she?,' the cat's mother?

Oh and I don't sell on Vinted.

So today for example, I have some of the basic H & M joggers on, a Ganni smiley face t shirt and my comme de garçons converse.

In my head I think 'yes! That'll look great!'

The reality is not quite like the mental image 😀

I'm also replacing my underwear. I wear the same old same old John Lewis knickers that I've had for a few years despite a drawer full of Calvin Klein stuff. Which I actually hate and never reach for

I ordered one pair of stripe and stare knickers which arrived this morning as I just wanted to see what they were like and how the sizing is with them. I can highly recommend as they're very soft and comfortable so I'll buy some of those in bulk now

Be careful with Stripe and Stare! They fall apart very quickly.

LunaNorth · 01/09/2023 08:53

Just caught up, sorry!

I recommend good old M&S flexifit.

I relate to your Breton dilemma. I too like Jigsaw, and they do still do them. Boden are very good too - get some before they go bust!

Reepicheepy · 01/09/2023 08:58

Im in the process of doing this. I’d say I was 80% successful for summer - I sold a lot of stuff I just didn’t wear and tried to be very strict with myself about this. On buying new stuff I really tried to buy for the life I actually have, but also in buying fewer nice things/actually wearing nice things for day to day life - so say I started wearing my dresses and skirts for school pick up. Also tried to only buy one of something - was guilty in the past of buying a few very similar items ( it’s like I panick I won’t find anything nice to wear!).

I didn’t totally succeed though - still bought a few too many ‘smarter’ things. One dress in particular but I do completely love it and it is fairly timeless in colour and style.

Am about to start on autumn/winter once the kids are back at school.

Notooserious · 01/09/2023 09:01

I get being done with the tunic and leggings phase! Omg yes! I have finally exited the really painful toddler years and I’m like, nope, enough. I want to dress like I don’t have a small sticky person hanging off me all the time - just some of the
time... I’ve had my hair cut and highlights, have had a breast reduction, and now I’m going through my wardrobe and getting rid of the things that I know that I will just fall back into if they are still there. Setting myself some goal weights for investment pieces (new cords, new coat) as I have all the shoes ever, and then when I hit target-ish I will rethink the leftovers. By that time I’ll probably have a teenager 🤣

Reepicheepy · 01/09/2023 09:08

I also went to a personal stylist in JL.

Most useful things I learnt was - weirdly to try a smaller size sometimes, particularly with the trend for more oversized clothes at the moment. As in short and petite it often looked better. Also she was really strict about only buying if I absolutely loved it - if it looked just nice/ok then no. And - for most of the wardrobe anyway - always try and buy an outfit/s, or something that could make an outfit ( but not always!). I guess that is a capsule wardrobe but that doesn’t mean boring basics it, it just means buying fewer clothes that offer lots of options.

BatsHatIsWonky · 01/09/2023 09:19

@LunaNorth I liked the stripe and stare for about an hour! Was going to place a proper order but they kept sort of falling down and I couldn't work out if they were too big or too small, it was weird.

So it's back to the drawing board. Ordered one pair of seaweed ones to trial from Alexander Clementine

Sarvanga38 · 01/09/2023 09:22

I am now mostly just gobsmacked that people pay £18+ for a single pair of everyday knickers, and feeling very cheap.😆

cloudcs · 01/09/2023 09:33

BatsHatIsWonky · 01/09/2023 08:44

Oh god @cloudcs can't you just bore off now? And who's 'she?,' the cat's mother?

Oh and I don't sell on Vinted.

Two people quoted me wanting to know why it was wasteful even if you were selling/ donating your clothes so I was just explaining. I get why you're feeling defensive of your decision but you are actually being very aggressive about me simply being on this thread and replying to people who quote me. If you don't like it then don't post on open online forums.

BatsHatIsWonky · 01/09/2023 09:38

@cloudcs I'm not being aggressive at all. And I'm not defensive.

You're just dragging down quite an interesting thread. Feel free to carrying posting, I'll just ignore you from now on and fingers crossed others will too.

Fishandchipsatthebeach · 01/09/2023 09:41

Those people saying leggings & tunics …. What do you mean by “tunics” exactly? could you post an image?

I’m imagining something like cheap black leggings, cheap mis-shapen ballet flats or uggs with a patterned top that is neither a top nor a dress …. Agree not a good look!

However I really like the leggings, over-sized jumper & cool trainers look, which is surely the same in terms of comfort & practicality?!

Fishandchipsatthebeach · 01/09/2023 09:41

So what I’m saying is it’s essentially the same outfit but a few tweaks take it from frumpy to cool?

cloudcs · 01/09/2023 09:41

BatsHatIsWonky · 01/09/2023 09:38

@cloudcs I'm not being aggressive at all. And I'm not defensive.

You're just dragging down quite an interesting thread. Feel free to carrying posting, I'll just ignore you from now on and fingers crossed others will too.

Your question was 'has anyone ever bined their entire wardrobe and started again?' and my post was entirely relevant to that question.

You've told me it's 'not the thread for me', told me to 'bore off', told me to find another thread to hang out on and been sarcastic. That's pretty aggressive.

If you don't care about environmental issues that's your perogative. It's also my perogative to point out that what you're doing is wasteful.

PollyThePixie · 01/09/2023 09:43

I’m currently doing this. This month it’s underwear and camisole tops. I’m going from the inside out.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 01/09/2023 09:44

I wouldn’t.

it’s getting very difficult to buy reasonably priced pieces of reasonable quality.

A world of pain awaits, wading through mountains of polyester with nothing less than £255.

BatsHatIsWonky · 01/09/2023 10:04

@Fishandchipsatthebeach back in the day when I used to do the tunic and leggings and ugg look, it was always a knee length tunic type dress, kind of a jersey material so yes you're on the right track with your first example.

Nothing wrong with it if that's what you like of course. It looked ridiculous on me

OP posts:
LadyBird1973 · 01/09/2023 10:08

@cloudcs if people are selling their unused clothes on eBay or Vinted, then other people are buying from there, instead of going to the shops and getting new ones. So yes, the OP is buying something she doesn't technically need but in doing so, she's not just binning her existing clothes, she's enabling others to buy them instead of buying new themselves. So one action offsets the other.

Besides which, it isn't ordinary people causing climate problems through going shopping. People have to live their lives and aren't responsible for the environmental policies (or lack) of countries that prioritise capitalism over protecting the planet. Probably what needs to happen is the ending of cheap fast fashion that's not designed to last, so cannot be resold or recycled properly. But I doubt this is what the OP will be buying.
