you haven't been able to wear your summer clothes regularly this year!
We had that lovely few weeks in May/June but since then I have had to wear cardigans, sweatshirts and jumpers because it has been so chilly.

There is a sale on in my favourite shop in our local town but I really can't see the point in buying more clothes to hang in the wardrobe.

I am going away to Somerset at the weekend. I want to wear my beautiful dresses with sandals, adding another layer in the evening. It's usually lovely in September when the children go baby to school, but our gamble doesn't look as though it will pay off this year. ☺️

Instead I am taking tights and boots, trousers and jumpers. I will, of course, take a dress for evening meals but will probably wear my DM boots not my new DM sandals.

DW and I are planning to save harder for next year and try to take the dog on the ferry to warmer climes.

(I do know this is totally a luxury and I am blessed to be able to have a holiday. My clothes have been acquired over many years and I love them!)

At least we both have brand raincoats to wear but it's just not the same!

Actually writing this has made me think. I will take my long skirts and sleeveless tops, then layer on the warmer layers and take some lovely scarves.
I was in a proper sulk this morning, convinced it would have to be my winter coat, hat scarf and gloves!!

Anyone else wishing for a glimpse of summer?

This happens every year!

Layering can work for some things.

Cyclingmummy1 · 29/08/2023 12:16

We're going to a wedding in the lakes. I'm considering jeans and a fleece.

TheClitterati · 29/08/2023 12:58

Yes I usually live in a few fav summer dresses all summer long, and I've barely worn them this year. When I do wear them I usually will add a cardie, wrap or hoodie too.

I usually find jeans unwearable from June - September and I've been wearing jeans on and off all summer too.

Its not been the best summer. But I always try to "carry my weather on the inside".

There is absolutely nothing we can do about the weather & there is little point in getting upset about something so outside of our control.

Do what humans are best at - adapt!

I disagree. I moved here about 10 years ago and this has been the worst summer by far! Lots of summer clothes for both me and my children have gone unworn this year.

Wiennetta · 29/08/2023 14:01

Is it really too cold to wear your summer dresses? I’m in Scotland so obviously the weather where I am might be quite different to you but it’s warm enough today to wear a dress and sandals although you’d want a light jumper or jacket.

I’m still wearing summer clothes and the weather looks like it will stay fairly nice over the next couple of weeks.

Could you try on your nice summer dresses with a jumper/jacket/cardigan over the top etc?

GettingStuffed · 29/08/2023 19:44

The weather is supposed to improve this weekend
I'm off to Southampton for a long weekend

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/08/2023 20:47

I agree OP. I’m off for six weeks over summer, and there wasn’t a single day it was nice enough to “sunbathe” in the garden. I have summer dresses I bought in May that have only been on once, and was mainly in jeans. My sandals haven’t been on since June.

Per pp I am also in Scotland but possibly a chillier part. (Today I wore ankle grazer trousers, a long sleeved Breton top and trainers, and that felt perfect did the weather/temperature.)

Defiantjazz · 30/08/2023 08:19

It’s rained a lot which sucks but it’s not been cold enough for jumpers where I am thankfully

Hippyhippybake · 30/08/2023 08:21

Yes I am - I have a big wardrobe of wafty summer dresses and linen jumpsuits and they are largely unworn!

dudsville · 30/08/2023 08:29

We've just not had a summer. Hard to believe it's nearly September. It's sad when we have nice things we look forward to wearing. Yesterday i wore a linen dress that could easily hide an elbow length tee under it and footless tights, so i was really warm enough. I was able to wear sandals but socks and DM boots would have been my choice had i gone further afield. That particular dress would be hard to pair with a cardi because of the kaftan-ish sleeves so I've not got long to wear it!

RaisinCain · 30/08/2023 15:30

I didn’t buy a single item of summer clothing this year and I’m bloody glad I didn’t!

SadCelticBunny · 30/08/2023 16:28

Sorry in a rush so won't tag you all but thank you for your responses.

I do run cold though, so that doesn't help.
I wander around saying, I am cold most of the year. ☺️☃️

I am sorting the clothes I am taking and have found a boiled wool coat in a lovely green that has a hood. I am sure that will be great if it doesn't rain.
It's a real Spring or Autumn coat, not too heavy if the sun comes out unexpectedly and raises the temperature.

I am going to take what ever the weather throws at me, moan to myself about the lovely clothes unworn in my wardrobe and retreat to the pub for some cider if necessary!

Where to you live? I want to move there Grin

Anna79ishere · 30/08/2023 18:22

We have stopped holidays in the UK. It is soooo expensive and weather is too cold. Went to Albania this year for a fraction of the price, great sea, great beaches and fantastic food. We spent including everything (flights, flat, food) the same we would have spent in Airbnb flat rental only a costal town in south England. We spent half the cost of places like center park!

Ruthdpl · 30/08/2023 20:09

I was only saying the same to my husband the other day! I bought 3 summer dresses this year & wore each one in Greece in June - but never since. The British ‘summer’ is so frustrating.

You'll be warm... I live here and we've been secretly sunbathing and sweating whilst everyone else complains of rain... Sat in the hot tub last night at 10pm and it was 18c still 😅

Fabulous news! The forecast looks good 🌞

I am grateful we never had any unbearable heatwaves but I do feel sad that there were only perhaps a handful of days that DD3 wore her proper summer clothes. Such a waste, will def not fit next year.

Riverlee · 31/08/2023 14:20

Yes, yes, yes!

I think I’ve worn each of my sundresses once this year, rather than on rotation. Last year, dh and I would head to the coast, go for a swim, sit and enjoy the beach or go for a walk, then head home before it gets overcrowded. We would then spend the afternoon lounging in the garden. This summer, the covers have rarely been off the garden furniture.

OldMonkey · 31/08/2023 14:26

Yes!!! I have an abundance of gorgeous summer dresses, and splurged on a few more early in the season. I've only been able to wear one of them once. The rest have sat in my wardrobe with the tags still on.

I've been in the U.K. 10+ years and this is the worst summer I can remember. It's utterly depressing! And the exact reason I hesitate and have never booked a U.K. summer holiday / break. Just thankful I don't live in Scotland or Ireland otherwise I don't know if I'd even still be alive Confused

OriginalUsername2 · 31/08/2023 14:28

It looks colder than it is outside but it’s freezing indoors here

OriginalUsername2 · 31/08/2023 14:28

I haven’t even got my summer clothes out this year!

Tarantella6 · 31/08/2023 14:30

Yes, my summer dresses came out of the loft, had a 3 month holiday in my wardrobe and now they've gone back up again!

SparkyBlue · 31/08/2023 14:37

Yes absolutely. I bought some lovely bits in the sales last year. We went abroad for a fortnight this year but it was so hot that I only wore very casual stuff so some of my lovely dresses haven't really been worn.

EversoDetermined · 31/08/2023 14:53

We're in SE England so although it hasn't been particularly hot it has still been warm enough for shorts, dresses, sandals etc, I haven't worn any sort of jeans, cardigan or jacket since spring. Given a choice between this or last year's heatwave which was unbearable, I'd take this, but my ideal would be lots of dry, sunny breezy days with temps in the low 20s and we haven't even really had that apart form June
