Piercing help!

Hi all,

My 13 year old daughter had her ears pierced back in the May school holidays and they are just not healing. She was cleaning them twice a day with the special solution and was told she could change them after 8 weeks (which she did). She has had an infection in one of the piercings which the Dr gave antibiotics for but still the ears haven't healed. There are scabs on the back of the piercing and when she goes to clean and move the piercing the scabs come off and bleed. Should we not move the piercing so the area under scabs can heal? I'm not sure what to do for the best as I don't have my ears pierced. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

What sort of material is the earring she has in made of?

SeriousLeigh · 27/08/2023 11:17

What are the earring made of? Titanium & solid gold are best for new piercings. Are the earrings flat back?

People say this is an old method and sprays are the now best but soaking my ears in as hot as I can handle seasalt water helps me. Get an airplane or ring donut shape pillow.

This sounds like an allergy to the metal. I had to give up on pierce ears when I developed an allergy to pretty much all earrings. Constant weeping and scabbing were the symptoms.

She needs to stick to gold/silver/platinum. She is allergic to the cheap metal; I can’t wear cheap stuff either and react even now, 40 yrs later

Sorry, this isn't of much help now, but ...

I took my dd to get her ears pierced and they simply said 'hands off'. No twisting, no solutions, just water when you wash. She had them done at the beginning of the hols and they advised not to change until Xmas if she can help it. This was with a needle, not a gun, and with titanium earrings.

Can you go back to the piercer for advice?

It sounds like she may be allergic or sensitive to the metal if it's not healing. I understand surgical grade titanium is safest.

Does she go swimming or anything where an infection might get introduced?

Just spotted you were advised to change at 8 weeks, I was told different and not to change earrings for six months and not twist or touch, cleaning twice a day for 3 months.

Thanks everyone. I think an allergy may well be the case. She has silver ones in at the moment. Her original ones were white gold. I will see if I can get some surgical titanium ones.
