Packable waterproof recommendations

Wiennetta · 26/08/2023 22:02

I’m after a very lightweight waterproof jacket that can be packed down to fit into a small bag.

It’s for when I’m on holiday and might need a waterproof but need to travel light. Would also use it for at home when the weather might be on and off, especially in spring and autumn.

As well as something light and packable, I want it to look reasonably stylish or at least plain/simple - so not sporty/techy. Would be more to wear with casual clothes and I already have a good waterproof for hiking etc.

Any recommendations much appreciated!

Seasalt do one that folds into its own pocket. Completely waterproof.

I can’t see one online - I can see they had a version for sale before but nothing in stock at the mo. Will keep an eye out.

I've got a couple of Joules ones from Amazon, nicely made and fit well.

Wiennetta · 27/08/2023 21:45

Thank you! I guess a key thing for me is stylish and the Joules/Seasalt type ones tend to verge on a bit too ‘jolly’ for me. Something a little more simple would be ideal. If it didn’t need to be packable I’d be looking at Rains, Stutterheim or similar.

What if you just bought/made your own drawstring bag for a not-technically-packable rain coat? I think most reasonably lightweight waterproofs would pack fine, and you could make a compression bag using a couple of drawstrings without too much trouble.

I don't think packable macs are ever either especially stylish or especially breathable so if you're looking for that I'd probably think again.

I'm assuming you've done a standard Google for pac a mac btw and deemed them unsuitable because most of the early results look like the definition of plain, inoffensive, packable raincoat. (Though not stylish!)

Yes could try and get a non packable one and take a bag for it - definitely an option.

I have a proper longer raincoat I use at home, which is great to wear when it’s forecast to rain, it is breathable etc but want something really light for a couple of holidays I have where I’ll be travelling around and just want something super lightweight (and willing to compromise on breathability etc). Would also be useful to pack into a bag if I’m out for the day and there might be a shower or two but it’s generally dry.

I have seen the regular pac-a-macs but was hoping for something a little nicer looking. It might not exist :)

I've got this one. It's showerproof, rather than properly waterproof and not very stylish, but I do think it's pretty inoffensive and it packs right down.

Thank you for this! This looks like an option - I like that it’s pretty simple. How well does it cope in the rain? I’m never sure what ‘showerproof’ really means.

It's absolutely fine in the normal British drizzle. I've not tried it in a total downpour.

This one looks like it's fully waterproof and also reasonably breathable:

I find a lot of the packable ones aren't a breathable material and I hate feeling like I'm stuck in a plastic bag.

Thanks for this! It looks fairly simple but not sure if it’s too sporty/outdoorsy in style.

Completely accept that it feels like I’m going to have to compromise and either get something more stylish but probably less practical or go for something practical but more outdoorsy.

I have a uniqlo one, very light, breathable, waterproof and fits easily into the ubiquitous uniqlo cross body bag with plenty of room to spare

I wouldn't call it stylish more innocuous

dotdotdotdash · 27/08/2023 23:23

Finisterre Rainbird is both stylish and practical, but not cheap!

EyesEars · 27/08/2023 23:34

Look at Joules Truro.

I second Uniqlo's pocketable parka.

It packs down into a cylindrical drawstring bag no bigger than a cornish pasty and is superlight and fits into your pocket. I bring it for rain and if it gets cold or windy, to cut the wind. Perfect for mild changeable weather. Fits into a handbag.

Not the most stylish, but very practical as a standby.

I’ve bought this one https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/women-s-long-waterproof-hiking-jacket-raincut-long/_/R-p-324641?mc=8589389&c=green_khaki recently. It has a bit of a mod vibe in real life, I quite like the look. It packs down pretty small - not as small as some, but I like that it’s a bit longer. No fun having a dry torso and wet bum. It also has excellent pockets, big open ones to put your hands in, with little ones (one zipped) inside those pockets for things.

Take a look at Findra. I have a lightweight, waterproof jacket from them which is brilliant.

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 28/08/2023 07:16

This is much more elaborate than you're looking for, I've been trying to talk myself into needing one of these. Lots of patterns and colours
