What bottoms/trousers are you going for this coming season?

I am at a loss, have some cords from Toast that make me look like a tied up sack because the waist is so high. I have some simple straight jeans, and some wide leg cords that are nice but I dread them getting wet (flapping in the rain!).

Just don't know what I want to wear really, have been enjoying shorts and wafty linen pants this summer but looks like history now!

I am even pondering skirts with tights at this point. Just so sick of super high waist trews that look odd on me because my torso is small, and everything seems so sack like and bulky in the stores. I used to wear leggings with long jumpers but it feels tired. And jeans just bore me after one or two wears, blah!

What are you opting for this coming season - are you going to wear wide legs and loose fit jeans/pants? Anyone still wearing leggings?
I have not been taking much notice of clothes for a while so am curious what everyone's up to now.

Flares all the way, it's the only style which can balance out my mum tum. Will keep going all the way to source them even when they will not be in style any longer, exactly like I did during the horrible 10s dominated by the horrible skinnies! 😂

Ilmecourtsurleharicot · 28/08/2023 09:10

Haha the skinny jeaned 10s were a difficult decade for me too.

In winter I will wear straight or A line longer skirts and chunky DM style shoes or chunky brogues for work with a cropped jumper or tucked in shirt. I’ve no idea what’s fashionable but will always love 90s proportions/silhouette.

Am loathing the return of the Britney/Paris Hilton 00s shapes and colours that has been boosted by the Barbie movie over the summer. Twee and horrible and from that it’s a slippery slope back down to skinny jeans again in a few years Hmm

@MurielThrockmorton Those are the M&S brown cords that I bought. I haven't got any brown trousers, I mostly wear navy. They had hardly any left in my size 14L in any colour, and our store very rarely stocks the long length, I'm 33" inside leg and wear flat boots with trousers mainly

TheFeistyFeminist · 28/08/2023 10:05

Reassuring to hear brown cords are making a comeback. I have a pair from last time though I suspect they need shortening. I lived in heels in those days and can't tolerate them now.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/08/2023 10:25

Brown cords are most definitely not for me. I like black ones but always end up trying them on and not buying them, because they don't seem to suit me. Will probably try some on this year too!

BansheeofInisherin · 28/08/2023 10:28

Marking. I really like those M and S wide leg cords.

BansheeofInisherin · 28/08/2023 10:30

@MurielThrockmorton what colour tops do you wear brown cords with?

TheOGCCL · 28/08/2023 10:55

I wear cord trousers every day when the weather gets colder. Used to be skinny cords but these days it’s looser ones, cropped (via the dry cleaner) to avoid getting swamped and wet and worn with ankle boots. I only like needle cord, not thick wale.

I might get the Seasalt Crackington moleskin ones in Marine though I already have a lot of blue trousers. I couldn’t wear those M&S ones as they are too high rise for me. Generally rises are dropping a bit, at least there’s a bit more variety. I’ve got some of my cords on eBay as rises have been so high for so long.

I got these wide leg trousers from H&M which fit well and are flattering on me but I just can’t see how they’ll be that practical.

I’m an Autumn so brown trousers are perfect for me, I wear them with navy, teal. tan, orange, cream and red @BansheeofInisherin.

User15387500 · 28/08/2023 11:00

I have some Seasalt Crackington moleskin trousers and they are lovely, it's worth looking on their eBay outlet as they sometimes have them on there at a good price

Lizardonachair · 28/08/2023 11:08

This is a good thread! I've decided to give up trousers and jeans altogether and just wear skirts if possible! I have mom jeans and they don't suit me, and I hate the idea of my jeans getting wet at the bottom it brings back bad memories of the 2000's!

Pinktruffle · 28/08/2023 11:43

Vivfor60 · 25/08/2023 09:20

In winter when it is cold I wear long jumpers and black jeggings (dye them now and again to keep them black) tucked into knee length biker style boots and a big wool coat or long puffer coat. It is probably very dated, but as my name suggests I am getting on a bit and so I don't care too much! I love stomping around in my big boots. For when not so cold and not raining I bought a couple of pairs of (mid rise) black boot cut jeans to wear with shirts, jumpers and trainers.

As an always cold person how do you find ones warm enough? Years ago I got some fleece lined leggings from H&M (I think) but haven't seen them in stores in eons.

londonmummy1966 · 28/08/2023 12:20

I'm the opposite in that I'm loving high waisted everything as I have no hips so low rise just fall straight off me.

I've been living in linen wideleg cargos from Oysho so I'm hoping to fing something similar for the winter. I don't drive so walk a lot so sympathise with the dislike of wet widelegs flapping around my ankles. I've been wearing cropped widelegs for a couple of years now with knee boots underneath and think I'll stick to that this year. I bought a great pair of pull on widelegged cords from M&S last year and had them taken up.

WIdelegs do need a more fitted top so I've been buying zip necked tops a size or so smaller and wearing them open quite low over a vest top - it means that the fit properly under the bust (which they wouldn't do if I bought the size thtat actually fits my 34Fs.

smilesup · 28/08/2023 12:28

YukoandHiro · 25/08/2023 09:36

I can't get back into flares. Whenever I see someone wearing them over the age of 25 they look so dated to me - like they never cleared out their 2001 wardrobe

Old people stay unfashionable incase someone thinks you might be old.

I've been wearing wide trousers and love them. They suit my shape much more than skinnies as I have thin ankles and calves and a big arse.

MurielThrockmorton · 28/08/2023 12:56

@BansheeofInisherin I saw that film, my nan used to holiday on Achill island (as a ladies maid rather than an actual holiday!)

Tbh I haven’t really got very far with the styling, I tend to see things I like and buy them and think about that later! But I think I would wear cream, black, navy, I’ve got an apple green tank top (i don’t think they’re called that anymore!) that I might try, though that might be a bit much! Also as a PP said a more fitted style.

LoobyDop · 28/08/2023 13:29

I think I’m going to stick with rolled up straight leg jeans. I love wide legged trousers, but I can’t make shoes work with them other than trainers. Maybe if ballet flats are back, but that would only really work for autumn, not right the way through winter.

EllaPaella · 28/08/2023 19:25

M&S boyfriend jeans are the best (i'm a jeans addict and have all kinds of styles). They're mid rise and a lovely cut. Look good with all footwear.

Find a silhouette that suits you and stick to it. I fare well in straight legs, medium rise, no matter the material. I find a lot of jeans brands have all different fits now, live Levis or Mavi. I love a cargo trouser, as long as the legs aren't too wide, and the side pockets are flat.

I live a very casual life, no office wear for me.

Agree with this. I know what silhouettes and necklines suit me & I stick with them. I add trendier touches to this - a trendy bag, a boxy blazer, some chunky hoop earrings...

If non-trendy trousers work better for you, wear them! Just add a few more up-to-date touches.

The most stylish people i know have a strong sense of personal style & an almost "signature look" that suits them & they modernize and vary with accessories or items that are more current.

This autumn I think I'll be wearing

Trench coat + stripy polo neck + straight leg (but not tight) jeans + loafers

Oversize roll neck sweatshirt + leggings + lace up pointy boots

Tailored long wool coat + classic t-shirt + tailored trousers + trainers

Wide leg trousers + polo neck bodysuit + belt + cropped boxy jacket + pointy platform brogues

Straight leg are great, I like straight legs that fit loosely on the legs personally.

For shoes & wide leg trousers, I love my loafers, they work with pretty much everything. For winter I'm gonna try them with platform trainers, brogues and lace up pointy boots.

Re being cold all the time - me too.
I have a long Coach black down puffer that is super cosy & goes with everything. Also long wool coats. I have M&S thermal bodysuits and leggings that are amazing as well as some fleece lined leggings and fur lined boots. Layering is my friend too! I like a bodysuit with a wool top, and a blazer/sweater plus a nice coat!

LanternFields · 28/08/2023 20:01

Lots of cord lovers here!

I mentioned my cords from Toast, they are gorgeous but the waist is too high and sits oddly, unless i wear a very long, loose top to cover it. Otherwise they are gorgeous and a perfect blue-black shade with tapered legs. Go really well with boots.

I also have some dark green wide leg cords from Superdry 2 yrs ago. A nice mid rise and amazing fit. I wore them with navy jumpers and dark grey high top converse.

I much prefer sleeker fit clothes though and look my best in a wispy silk skirt and ballet style low neck top. Slim fit bottoms look best on me as i am on the skinny side, but a huge NO to skinny jeans! I am so very glad that they have finally gone away, or at least made room for other styles.

I always feel overwhelmed by baggy clothes even though I don't like tight fits. I wish I could make it work or me like Japanese and Korean women do, maybe it's my face and hair??

I can only really wear skinny jeans, I am only 5’2 so flairs are a no no (they drag in puddles) and straight cut make me look awful too. I wear dungarees a lot which probably make me look like a child but they are comfy. I wish I could find a dress that didn’t make me look like a sack of spuds, something I could wear thick tights with, most dresses are way too long on my or way too short.

Crispynoodle · 28/08/2023 20:36

MurielThrockmorton · 28/08/2023 08:27

These are the brown M&S wide leg cords I bought, but there are other colours. https://www.marksandspencer.com/cotton-rich-cord-wide-leg-trousers/p/clp60607901?color=BITTERCHOCOLATE&prevPage=srp#intid=pid_pg1pip4g2r1c2

I don’t know what’s going on with their leg lengths though, last year, everything seemed to be massively long and I was a short, but I bought these in long, I’m 5’6

Omg I just bought some!!

Ichabodandme · 28/08/2023 21:14

Crispynoodle · 28/08/2023 20:36

Omg I just bought some!!

I like those but then I would have to think about what footwear/boots goes with them! It was all so easy with skinnies 😄

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 28/08/2023 21:19

(Omg I just bought some!!*

Me too!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/08/2023 14:14

I've bought some cargo trousers, but I'm struggling to make them work.

Will probably stick mostly to rolled up jeans with boots. I wouldn't go out of the house in leggings, unless for exercise.

I've got plenty of skirts and dresses, too.

For me these are the same as the flares post above. I just think of All Saints rocking their cargoes and vest tops in 1998. If you've worn them first time around it sometimes feel really old fashioned to wear them again when you're older and you're worried about pulling it off. I really struggle to wear trends that are "back in fashion again" now I'm older cos I'm aware that you're supposed to wear them ever so slightly differently to how I used to wear them. Plus i'm a totally different shape to how I was at 25.

Ohyousillybilly · 28/08/2023 21:26

I've got wide leg mid calf jeans that I've been wearing all summer with trainers. For winter, I'll wear them with high ankle boots and thick woollen socks or tights. As the jeans stop mid calf they won't get wet in the rain.
