Is it possible for permanent hair dye to 'wear off' or did I have a dodgy hair colour

I went to a fancy naice hairdresser a few weeks ago for a cut and colour. Disclaimer my hair needed a really good dye as I hadn't done the roots in a few months. I permanent dye my hair usually but have had it done at the hairdresser in the past.

The dye was a great cover after being done but I'm now noticing about a month later that a number of grey hairs that were previously covered by the dye have come back as grey. 'I don't mean grey roots here, I mean decent lengths of hair. It's not obvious unless you look but it is weird. I've never had this with permanent dye before.

When I went to the fancy hairdresser, they want to mix in semi permanent hair dye with my permanent because they said the effect would be better but I asked them not to because there was no point (to me) - I just wanted the permanent. Now I'm wondering if she had done this and hadn't told me as that would account for some grey showing through again. Or is it possible for permanent hair dye to do this? It's never happened to me before... I thought permanent was permanent.

I'm debating if I should contact them to check it and complain but I'm not a complaining person but at the same time, what's the point of paying for permanent hair dye when it doesn't all last more than a month?!

It's hard to cover greys - they have no pigment left so there's nothing for the hair dye to stick to and change. All it really does it stain the grey hair - and that washes away gradually.

Covering greys is quite exhausting.

Are you using special shampoo for coloured hair? Normal products can cause fading.

This is why I stopped colouring my hair - it just will not stick to the white hair. Very frustrating.

How did I never know this?! I’ve never had this problem when colouring my hair before and so I presumed it was something the hairdresser did. She only left it on for 15 minutes whereas usually I leave it on for longer. What a pita.

She should have left it on more that 15mins. I buy a mask for my hairdresser with dye in it as it's red and fades quickly

15 mins? There is your problem. My hairdresser leaves mine on for 45 mins

I have balayage, dark roots, my hairdresser leaves my colour on for 45 minutes.
It seriously lasts about three weeks then I have to put a root dye on, it's a never ending cycle
