Size 18, please help me replace my skinny jeans

I'm a size 18 hourglass shape, and I live in Topshop Joni jeans. I'm only in my late 20s and I feel really frumpy and old fashioned when I wear them with friends who are all now wearing looser jeans like mom jeans, etc.

I've tried on lots of jeans and I am struggling to find some that are flattering. I need them to be tight on my hips and thighs at least otherwise they look really unflattering. They look really masculine on me, which doesn't suit me/isn't what I like. I'm a Kibbe soft classic if that means anything to anyone on here.

I've tried the Sienna jeans from M&S but found they just looked like poorly fitting skinny jeans on me.

Please can someone recommend a high-waisted pair of jeans that will be good pair to wear to transition out of skinny jeans?

Thank you

Have you got a John Lewis near you? If so I’d recommend getting a personal styling appointment for jeans, just as I did at the start of the week. I found it very useful.

ilovecherries · 19/08/2023 19:01

I don’t know if they still do them, but I transitioned to And/Or Silverlake jeans from JL and I also like M&S Harper Jeans - except I do have to wash the latter rather too often to pull them back in. But second a jeans shop at JL. I hate jeans shopping with a passion but it’s much easier when someone else is doing all the running about and you have a vast changing room with a proper chair etc to sit on to haul them off and on.

I'm in your shoes OP. Not a 16, but non-skinny jeans just don't suit me at all. Flat bum and petite - they all look awful and way too much material.
I haven't found another option and have got away with wearing skirts but not sure what to do in Autumn.
I did buy a skinny pair of tan trousers (basically very thick legging with pockets and belt loops) - can defo get away with skinny 'trousers' - as long as you don't buy skinny denim.

This is MN so you'll get a lot of wear-what-you-like type posts, but some of us will get that skinny jeans are a no-no.

Try the 'trouser' thing.

Good luck x

I am the same size and shape albeit with an apron belly going on (and based upon my internet research a likely soft classic...)

I don't wear jeans much at all as I struggle to find them to fit well. Where I have, oddly it's been supermarket jeans, either Tu or F&F at Tesco. They have worked much better for me than much more expensive places.

Galiana · 19/08/2023 21:04

@amomentintime do you actually need to wear jeans?

They're not obligatory.

They can be an easy casual choice if you're thin.

If you're not though, I'd say they were more difficult.

I'm not sure how tall you are or your general look, but as a size 18 hourglass figure have you tried a high waist straight leg with a turn-up?

I think skinnies are easier for curvy women because of the lycra, and it's difficult to get a good fit otherwise.

However, if you want to wear jeans, persevere, I would certainly step away from the lycra and go for a more structured pair.

Experiment with some different silhouettes, see how it feels.

M&S Harper jeans are essentially skinnies with slightly more fabric at the ankles. I'm a 16/18 and I wear them a lot. Look for slim leg, relaxed skinny or cigarette jeans. They have to hit just around the ankle though. They look odd if they're too long

Jellylover · 19/08/2023 21:16

Look at Matalan. Their Grace jeans are great.

Mariecat1970 · 19/08/2023 21:33

I agree with the M&S Harper jeans. I think they’re called ‘cigarette’ style? Im a 16-18 and live in them! Much more flattering than mom jeans.

lyrapie · 19/08/2023 21:49

When I transitioned from skinnies I got a pair of cropped, straight Levis (I am a size 16 in case helpful to know). Not the cheapest but love them. Can't go wrong with Levis I find - great fit, good demin, they last forever pretty much and get better as they age. Sale on at moment too :) Hate jean shopping. Good luck :)

Sleepyquest · 19/08/2023 21:54

I'm the same as you and have just stopped wearing jeans because I can't find any!!!

I'm going to look at these M&S ones now

Mossstitch · 19/08/2023 22:23

I'm size 18 and tall hourglass. I look slimmer when jeans are quite fitted on the thigh so know what you mean. Agree with another poster have found Tu girlfriend style from sainsburys fit nicely and also have a pair of bootcut which fit on the thighs from M & Co which are flattering.

lindyloo57 · 19/08/2023 22:33

I'm petite too and find all other style of jeans too much fabric, I did buy some levis straight jeans, for me that's as wide as I can go.

AnnieSnap · 19/08/2023 22:37

High waist M&S jeans with a bit of Lycra are our friends (maybe bootcut, boyfriend, girlfriend or straight leg). I am a size 18 in most things, but a 16 in their jeans

mykookachew · 19/08/2023 22:48

I also love And/or jeans from John Lewis. They aren't cheap (£75) but I find them really comfy.

Akiddleetivy2woodenchu · 19/08/2023 22:51

DD2, who is in her early 20s, just bought a pair of flared jeans from River Island. They look great, make her legs look even longer, and are tight at the top, to the knee, high waisted and very flattering.

Loopylooni · 19/08/2023 22:52

I wear M&S wide leg jeans now, or the boot cut ones. Really great quality.

itsnotmeitsu · 20/08/2023 00:54

My go-to brand for jeans is Noisy May. Not expensive, wash well, and keep their shape. They're also really comfortable. I've got probably four straight-legged pairs in varying colours, but my latest purchase has a kick-flare. I've never had to send a pair back.
