Trainers v Sandals

Please share with me. Are you wearing sandals or trainers? It's warm yet when I am out - shopping etc - most women I see are in trainers rather than sandals. Why?

Maybe it's not that hot when they put their trainers on for the day? Or their sandals are uncomfortable for shopping, walking etc?

I hate hate hate having feet that are a bit too cold so if I'm leaving for work at 7am I'm less likely to wear sandals as it's not warm then.

It depends more on what I am doing that day, than the temperature.

If I'm doing a lot of walking, then trainers stand me in better stead. If I'm just pottering about, or traveling from car to building, or nipping to one place, or 'going out' somewhere, then I'd have sandals on

Sandals always. They look so much better, especially with dresses. Admittedly it’s a lot easier to do in the US though than it was back home as the summers are much warmer.

Quite so.
I like wearing sandals in summer but they're not always suitable for where I'm walking.

StarlightLady · 17/08/2023 06:07

Like others, it depends on what l plan to do. But l hardly ever wear jeans or trousers in the summer, so although l wear trainers with dresses, walking sandals tend to win. In addition it’s very weather forecast driven. I don’t like to be out snd about in sandals on wet days.

thedevilinablackdress · 17/08/2023 07:00

With the state of the filthy pavements round here, I'd rather keep my feet covered. Loads of meshy lightweight options in trainers for warm weather.

Labbingtons · 17/08/2023 07:09

In warm summer, trainers for active days out and about, like going for a dog walk. But I airways feel a bit ‘yuk’ in them. Leather trainers if going into town or London when there’s any chance of rain. I hate sandals in English rain, but non waterproof trainers are even worse. I much prefer summer dresses and so always feel more elegant and better put together in sandals. They just look so much better, and the whole big old chunky trainers with dresses look is much less of a thing across the channel. I also find sandals much more comfortable in the heat. Today I’m wandering around an Adriatic coastal town and will be very happy in my Saltwaters all day long.

Which walking sandals would you recommend? We are in the Alps a lot and I often see people in them, and they look so comfy!

StarlightLady · 17/08/2023 08:30

@Labbingtons - My most recent sandals are “Weird Fish”, they are very comfy, I also have some from Mountain Warehouse. But l haven’t really had any brand loyalty over the years. I would just say try on and see what’s right for you.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/08/2023 09:31

My walking sandals are Merrell Kahuna, ugly but comfortable and a bit more supportive than most sandals.

LolaSmiles · 17/08/2023 09:56

Sandals as much as possible here, but I don't particularly like wearing trainers.

I think I have two seasons in footwear. Winter boot season and sandal season.

Xrays · 17/08/2023 10:01

I do a lot of brisk walking when I’m out and about and find trainers more practical. I always seem to trip over my feet in sandals even if they’re practical ones and fit well.

EllaPaella · 17/08/2023 15:10

I've been wearing sandals every day this summer even when it's raining. I only really wear trainers in those 'in between' months when it's too mild for winter boots and too cold for sandals so April/May and maybe late September early October.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/08/2023 15:23

Come to think, I don't wear 'trainers', I wear walking shoes (merrell or berghaus). Or if I'm not doing proper walking, sometimes canvas deck shoes - they're a good lighter alternative if I want a closed shoe.

KirstenBlest · 17/08/2023 20:18

I wear trainers because they are comfortable. I don't really have the feet for sandals and I prefer to have my feet covered.

TheOGCCL · 17/08/2023 21:21

Even though the summer hasn't been great I've noticed in recent years that sandals are not as common even in very hot days. If you look though an average tube carriage in London, 90% of people are wearing trainers. I think people have just got used to wearing trainers every day regardless of the weather. Personally I find having my feet enclosed in hot weather makes me feel very uncomfortable so I like to wear sandals unless it's too wet or cold.

LoserWinner · 17/08/2023 21:54

If I’m walking a lot in sandals, I tend to pick up little bits of grit which hurt the bottom of my foot as I walk. So although I may wear sandals around the house or for a brief trip to the shops, I prefer deck shoes or other flat shoes for walking any distance. I never wear trainers - I don’t find them very comfortable.

JaceLancs · 17/08/2023 22:31

Sandals all the way for me I rarely wear trainers

HappiDaze · 18/08/2023 00:22

I ditched my sandals this year and have only been wearing trainers

I wore flip flops, sliders, aqua shoes and trainers on holiday and I wear Birkenstocks around the house.

HappiDaze · 18/08/2023 00:23

I walk a lot so I prefer trainers

blahblahblah1654 · 18/08/2023 00:29

Bright white converse recently. I find them so lightweight and comfortable. They look nice with dresses too. I still wear sandals but less often.

Zipps · 18/08/2023 08:45

Sandals now the weather has improved and for holidays. I can walk miles in my Timberland and Doc marten ones. If the forecast is rain I wear my leather converse.
I wear sliders around the house.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 18/08/2023 15:39

sandals.

Also boat shoes, ballerinas etc.

Trainers are too hot in summer.

lyrapie · 20/08/2023 14:29

Interesting mix. Thanks all. Love trainers but my hot feet prefer sandals. Sticking with them till DM season rolls round.

Ive worn sandals a lot less this year due to unpredictable weather! Not a fan of getting caught in the rain in sandals.
