How much for a dress ?

I like dresses...I tend to buy from & Other Stories, and I bought some work clothes from LK Bennett although they were in the sale. I tend to wear dresses for work, and work in a relatively conservative field, but am finding it hard to find items under £300 for a good quality, well made dress. In the past I have bought from Reiss but I haven't been quite so taken by them recently. Any ideas ?

You’re doing well if you can keep to that amount. (It was easy enough to spend £500 on a decent work dress a quarter of a century ago!)

I suppose if I needed a relatively conservative - in price and style - work wardrobe now, I’d keep an eye on Raey @ Matches and pounce on the sales for anything over my budget. Don’t know if this is too plain for you?

It doesn’t sound as if you’re a MaxMara customer? They’re an obvious place for work dresses that don’t necessarily fling one back to a previous century - but even in the sales the best would cost too much.

The full price elbow length sleeve, tie waist alternative from the same designer also looks rather cute.

When you say conservative - do you mean court, or just preserving decency, maybe with patterns and pretty colours?

Thank you both above. I have to wear fairly fitted things or I look quite swamped...saw some nice things at Sandro but perhaps a tad too short, but then again don't want to go frumpy length. Can't wear beige, camel, looks vile on me. Am size 8 and 5.7 so some short stuff looks a little too short...

I always find Hobbs clothing to be very good quality.

I am on the hunt for a good, smart work dress. I can’t wear suits as I can never find a jacket to fit.

I tried on a gorgeous silk ‘S Max Mara shirt dress this week which was utterly perfect, but it was the best part of £700. I’m kind of regretting not buying it but I find it hard to justify £700…

I try on dresses that are hard to justify costs wise and then am left with a lingering feeling of " what might have been"...
