Could a tailor do this - coat alterations

I picked up a jaeger wool camel coat which fits really well from a charity shop for a tenner. It's in great condition and is a classic shape.

The only issue is the collar. It's a wide shawl style and really doesn't suit me. I'd want a smaller more traditional shape.

Everything else about the coat is great so ideally I'd get the coat altered. It was such a bargain that even if the alterations cost a bit it's still a good investment. But if it can't be made then I'll be better off donating it again.

Of course I need to take it to someone to look at it but that means taking it into work which is a pain so thought I'd get opinions first.

I'm an experienced dressmaker and would be able to do that, so I'm sure a good tailor will have no problem!

I'd find a picture of what exactly you would like it to be like. It is doable but might be pricy.

Yes, relatively easy to do but will take time. Be clear on what you want the finished width of the collar to be. A dressmaker or tailor could do it but be wary of alteration places unless they have good staff who will take the time to do it well.

@Honeysuckle16, thanks. We have an alterations place in my little town and I've got them to do small bits before but they are very uninterested so I was planning on taking it to a proper tailor in the city. Pleased my instincts seem right.

I wouldn't change it, unless the rest of the coat fitted perfectly.
I'd consider making the collar narrower. I'd probably do it myself.
