What make up do you wear on a daily basis if any? And how do you find the time/inclination to put it on?

Hi all, I have decided that I am in dire need of a make over, I am 42 years old and only ever wear make up when I am out for an evening and even then its a bit sparce, a bit of mascara and lippy.

I admire people who are not as lazy as me and make up every day, how can I motivate myself to get up that little bit earlier?

I have a fair colouring and blonde hair " whats hot and what not" for one such as I.

ALWAYS wear make-up. Takes about 2 minutes. Concealer under eyes and on the odd spot, blusher, mascara, lippy or clear gloss. Would feel naked without it and there is a huge difference for just a couple of minutes effort

bubbleandsqueak · 29/02/2008 12:37

An update, routing around in my make-up bag I found quite a few bits to get me started including foundation, a selection of eye shadows a couple of lippys as well as mascara and eye liner.

I went out last night with DH and he was quite complementary about my efforts and I felt quite confident throughout the night. To this end I have again made an effort this morning and am now realising that it is in actual fact quite easy to do and I am sure be quicker with practice. So thanks to all for contributing, as well as all the reccomendations.

I have even taken photos to remind myself that I do look better with something on my face!

Cheers

Similiar age to you bubbleandsqueak(almost 42)
I look really ill with no make-up
Concealer
Tinted moisturiser
Cream blusher
Mascara (top lashes)
Lipgloss
Sometimes eyeliner and eyeshadow.
Think the key is to blend a lot and not have too heavy make-up.
When you are younger you can slap on bright colours and they look ok.

expatinscotland · 29/02/2008 13:16

i look horrible with no makeup!

blotchy, uneven skin, old acne scars, sallowness.

i put on: concealer, primer, foundation, creme blush, loose powder on the Tzone, Benefit lemon aid on my eyelids, mascara, lip liner and lippy.

takes about 5 minutes.

citylover · 29/02/2008 13:47

minimum daytime
serum
concealer
tinted moisturiser
sometimes light dusting of powder
eyeliner
mascara top only
brow pencil
pout lip plump pink lip gloss

Sometimes eye shadow

if at night all of the above might add foundation plus alot stronger eyes or lips.

citylover · 29/02/2008 13:47

oops forgot blusher

Anna8888 · 29/02/2008 13:50

I wear, every day, over moisturiser and tinted eyelashes:

  • Guerlain Terracotta in the palest shade
  • three different Stila eyeshadows (white, taupe, black)
  • Guerlain black eyeliner
  • Lancome black mascara
  • Stila lip pencil
  • Lancome lipstick
AdamAnt · 29/02/2008 13:51

Light foundation
Touche eclat
Eyebrow pencil
Neutral (skin coloured) eyeshadow
Black liquid liner
Mascara
Blusher
Lipliner (neutral)
Lipstick (neutral)
Cream blusher
Powder

I need it to look human.

JingleyJen · 29/02/2008 13:56

takes a couple of minutes for me to do my makeup.
moisturise as soon as I get up

later
max factor liquid foundation,
mascara
lipstick

I keep them in my handbag so if I leave the house in a rush I can do it later.

if I am going out in an evening I add eyeshadow and a bit of blush.

DrNortherner · 29/02/2008 14:00

Everyone has 5 minutes to spare putting on a bit of make up. Thise that don't just can't eb arsed or don't want to imo. I also think only fresh faced teenagers can get away with out make up, or if your are on holiday and have a tan.

The rest of us can all benefit with a good base.

Every day I wear este lauder individualist base, cheek glace, bronzer, mascara and lip gloss. More if it's a night out.

onebatmother · 29/02/2008 16:44

Gosh DrNortherner, you are quite firm on this matter, and jolly good thing too.

chocolatespiders · 29/02/2008 16:47

dr N - is the base you talk about foundation... how many pennies is it?
thanks

ScoobyDYSONDoo · 29/02/2008 16:48

Foundation so don't look so pale.

Concealer under eyes to hide my dark bags from dd waking me through the nights.

Bit of blusher.

Eye shadow, natural soft colour.

Mascara.

Just started wearing a natural coloured lip gloss too.

Takes me about 10 mins in the morning to do & makes me feel better about myself.

chocolatespiders · 29/02/2008 16:49

anyway without fail i use

fOUNDATION

powder

dark bag cover up

Bronzer

eyeshadow

mascara.

sometimes cheek highlighter (only avon item i buy)

Coulsnt leave the house without it on i know that sounds sad but i feel crap with out it

JerryErnie · 29/02/2008 22:09

I have actually timed myself (no rushing) and it takes me 6 mins.
I always wear makeup, I look sooo much better with it.
Everyday I wear;

Foundation
Powder (on nose)
Eye bag cover up
Mascara (on curled lashes)

Occasionally I also line my top lashes.

carmenelectra · 29/02/2008 22:18

Bubble,

If you are fair, then amybe a bit of mascara and lipgloss as the bare minimum id say.

Im 37. Quite darkish skin.

I use:
Bit of foundation where i need it(around nose etc)
mascara(sometimes eyeliner)
Blusher

Highlighter(either mixed with foundation or alone on cheeks

Lipstick/gloss

Takes 5-10 mimn i suppose

Weekends prob a bit more, eyeshadow or eyeliner and i would take longer to apply.

LittleFriendSusan · 29/02/2008 22:48

I wear make-up every day - have terrible skin and look like sh*t without it!

I cleanse & moisturise as soon as I get up, gte dressed, straighten hair, then put on make-up. Minimum of foundation & mascara #(dark brown as am also fair and black is too harsh for me unless going out!).

Usually stick a bit of light-reflecting concealer stuff on the HUGE bags under my eyes. Eyeshadow if I have time: neutral beige type colour if in a rush, greens / blues / brown/golds if lots of time! Bit of lip balm and that's it. Takes about 2 minutes and I look a million times better than I did without...

duvetheaven · 01/03/2008 08:14

Low maintenance is name of game for me.
Put on the basics most day but then don't usually re-apply (although keep telling myself I should).

I like 2 in 1 products ie eyeshadow in a tube (so no brush needed), powder foundation or chubby lip pencils so it is lipliner and colour all in one.

Cheek highlighter is good . I am fair but Benefit Dallas is a good bronzer.

FrannyandZooey · 01/03/2008 08:36

those who think women should not go out without some kind of base, what about men? should they wear it too? what's different about their skin and our skin that means ours is unacceptable and theirs is acceptable?

having said that, I always wear eye make up as I look like I have no eyelashes or eyebrows otherwise, and I like it

but I think it is rather sad to say everyone MUST have it

CitroenDrivingFootballMum · 01/03/2008 09:36

i wear:

foundation mixed with highlighter

cream blusher

eyebrow pencil (on existing brows, not a la barbara cartland)

mascara

powder

lip balm

takes seconds

so...what IS best RED lippy? would love to emulate a 40's tranny but cant find a good 'un (lippy, not tranny!)

onebatmother · 01/03/2008 12:05

Ah, Citroen, that is an impossible question. What is right for me (in tranny terms) will not be right for you. The teensiest bit too much blue/orange/pink and the whole flimsy edifice will come crashing down - and that all depends on your skintone and natural lip colour.

25 years.. 25 years of lipstick! That's how long it's taken me to be this wise.

Wilkie · 01/03/2008 13:21

Wear make up every day and it takes about 5 mins to apply.

I wear light matt foundation
concealer
browny eyeshadow
mascara
blusher
lipstick

I never look 'made up' during the day as it is fairly subtle but always make a major effort at night with my eyes/or lips.

princessmel · 01/03/2008 13:42

If I am not seeing anyone (my parents, dh kids not included)then I don't bother with any.

But most days, 6 out of 7 , I wear tinted moisturiser, cream blusher(in a tube - looks like lip gloss), browny eyeshadow, eyeliner on lower lids and masccara if I can find it. I lose them a lot for some reason. Vaseline on my lips. Always vaseline.

I straighten my hair too. Just a quick run over. Takes minutes and makes a massive difference.

I've only been doing this since ds started nursery. I didn't want the mums to think I was a flake or a slob/scruff etc! It makes me feel better. I also only wear trainers if I'm taking the kids swimming etc.

If I'm going out then I wear eyeliner on top lids too and a darker or sparklier eyeshadow and a nude lip gloss.

callan · 01/03/2008 15:09

Revlon SkinLights Face Illuminator, just pop it on after moisturiser, it's amazing, lightens darkness, bronzes and illuminates but not as "claggy" as foundation, with a little mascara and lip gloss, it works wonders and it has SPF. Takes 2 mins start to finish, you simply must make the effort so as not to just blend in with the other thousands of women, especially mums that don't make the effort, and it makes you feel better and gives confidence.
