Help! Invited to a party. Dress code black tie. What does this mean? Long dress? Short dress? Heels? TIA

Long dress and heels, formal and elegant

It depends, it can mean cocktail dresses, or long dresses, depending on the occasion. Where I work black tie usually means cocktail dresses.

Or even elegant jumpsuits or trouser suits!

White tie = long dress
black tie = cocktail dress is enough, but either would be fine

I’d agree a cocktail dress is usually fine. Have been to some black tie events with people wearing actual gowns (which is fine if you floor length and/or sparkly is what you want but not required).

Thanks everyone. That's helpful 😁

I often wear a short (cocktail) dress to black tie if I want to dance. Or a jumpsuit.
