Getting my hair permed

I have realised that I look better with curly hair, but mine is thick and waves in the wrong place. Would it be really weird in 2023 to try and get it permed? Is this only an old lady thing? How would I even know if a salon offered it without being laughed out!

At least 15 years ago my SiL who's got thick curly hair had a perm to tame the curls and it looked fantastic.
I assume the chemicals etc and methods can only have improved over the years.

Hm , I've just had it done and they don't seem to have improved.

I was literally having this conversation with my hairdresser today. I was talking about my hideous perm in the 1990's and asked if people ever ask for perms now. She said nobody under the age of about 80 - and how it's probably because they've not improved at all since they were last popular 30 years ago.

Summerhillsquare · 11/08/2023 22:08

It's a frizzy 80s nightmare - part dropped out so they redid it and it frazzled the redone part.

Why can't they perm hair into lovely big waves? Or that tousled look.

I don’t know why the perm never made a comeback. We all had them in the ‘80s.

What sort of perm? I remember a much older cousin in the 90s having a spiral perm. Long hair probably necessary. Demi waves were larger waves. You can get the demi waves now apparently, but I can't remember what it's called.

I have naturally curly/wavy hair (around 2B) so don't need a perm.
