I think I’ve got some milia in the corner of my eye (picture attached). It seems to be getting bigger & starting to bother me. Does anyone have any ideas how I can get rid of it? Thanks

Warm flannel or cotton pad GENTLY pressed over eye area should see it burst.

Or do you mean it's a hard cyst like lump?

Tinks15 · 09/08/2023 09:33

I’d say it’s more like a hard cyst like lump.

Anyone?

I'm a picker, poker, prodder and squeezer so would be taking a sterilised needle to it but that's probably not a good idea.

This is what I'd do, but I'm not recommending it.

If you were to gently pierce the top layer of skin over it and uncover it, it should pop out.

Get it removed by someone who does epilation in a salon.

Make sure they're qualified in advanced epilation.

Please do not do this, for two reasons.

Firstly, the main infection risk is from the bacteria that live on the skin, not the needle. As soon as you make a hole in the skin's surface, you allow bacteria that are harmless on the skin's surface to get places that they should not be, and to cause infection. You do not want an infection so close to the eye. The common bacteria that causes this type of infection (Staph) is increasingly antibiotic-resistant. Despite being a doctor, I am a shameless squeezer of my own spots, but I would never mess with something so close to the eye.

Secondly it's not necessarily a milium. The photo is too blurry to be sure, but any lump that is getting bigger should be seen by an HCP, to be on the safe side. It's probably a harmless cyst and it's extremely unlikely that it is anything to worry about but, in the unlikely event of it being a skin cancer, it's a very bad idea to stick a needle in it, as it could spread the cancer (NB, even if it is a skin cancer, which is very, very unlikely, it can be treated). Speak to your optometrist or GP.

I've had Milla for years. Years. Why do they bother you? They are just tiny white spots. They're nothing.

BlackJumpsuit · 09/08/2023 20:52

I had mine removed professionally.

It always looked like o had gunk in my eye.

I wouldn't mess around with anything that close to your eyeball!

It's not in her cheek or chin it's in the corner of her eye and it is bothering her!

Tinks15 · 09/08/2023 21:37

Thanks everyone. As much as I usually am a picker & squeezer I don’t fancy prodding about due to where it is. I think I might see someone professionally to extract it. @BlackJumpsuit who was it you saw?

@FFSCarrieBradshaw it bothers me because it looks like I’ve constantly got a lump of gunk sitting in my eye & i just don’t particularly like seeing it every morning I’m putting my make up on!

Q&A do a seaweed eye gel that I have found to be amazing for clearing up milia- it’s not expensive so worth a try?

I went to one of these and it was done by a nurse;

FFSCarrieBradshaw · 09/08/2023 22:21

That is tiny @Tinks15. I would say, don't worry about it.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/08/2023 01:12

Hot compress for at least 5 mins twice a day was what the nurse told dh and after a week or so it just squeezed itself out with a vigorous rub.

Ceci03 · 10/08/2023 01:39

I had one very close to my eye and poked it with a needle to gently break the skin and it just popped out. I didn't get an infection or anything . Warm flannel to soften it might help it pop on its own. I watched dr pimple popper do it and it looked very straightforward

Exactly this. Sterilise the needle and wipe the skin with alcohol gel first.

I'm not sure what this photo is suppose to prove? Most people do not want tiny white postules all over their face. I always get rid of mine as I find them unsightly and annoying.

LordSalem · 10/08/2023 02:21

I have clawed at at recent one, hard and sticking out. Then disappeared within a couple of days. I usually use something with high salicylic acid applied several times a day for a while to make them go away if I've got an event coming up.

LordSalem · 10/08/2023 02:26

@FFSCarrieBradshaw I’m not seeing milia there at all. A close up, well lit, photo of the eye areas might've been more helpful given the context of the thread than a random posed selfie.
Either way glad they don’t bother you if you understand what they are 👍🏻
