Are GHD straighteners worth the price? Need help for really frizzy hair

My hair has become even more frizzy than usual lately. Any advice please. Any good shampoos or products I can use at home? Or are straighteners the way to go - and is it best to buy GHD ones rather than cheaper ones? Thanks

Thanks for the tip re Cloud 9 - my GHD hot brush is on the way out after only 3.5 years and I've been looking to replace it.

SiobahnRoy · 10/08/2023 12:14

Remington shine therapy straighteners here (usually on offer somewhere) plus dry bar blow dry brush (which almost removes the need to straighten). I use social life for hair to style and a tiny amount of oi oil to smooth.

MrsSlocombesCat · 10/08/2023 12:19

When I went on holiday I forgot my ghds and bought some Nicky Clarke ones. I found them so good I continued to use them! They were only about £30.

TomAllenWife · 10/08/2023 12:22

The platinum ghds are so much better than the regular ones but £££££

However GHD customer service is shit, I ordered some in June and they have still not been recieved, they don't answer calls, tweets or WhatsApp

The new ghds are shit. My originals just packed up at 15 years and the new ones aren't a patch on them, so I replaced with cloud 9 which are excellent

This. Cloud 9's are much better, like the original GHD's. I've had both in the last 12 months and sold the GHDS and went back to Cloud 9 within 4 weeks

Blossomandbee · 10/08/2023 12:43

As others have said I've heard the old GHD's are good but my DH bought me my first pair a couple of years ago as a present and they're rubbish. I even discreetly asked where he got them from as I thought they were fakes. They feel flimsy and don't straighten well at all.
My hairdresser has told me to stop using them as they've made my hair thin on the ends (always use a heat protector spray)

The people who used to make GHDs back in their best days sold the brand and then started Cloud 9. So if you are looking for old school GHD quality today then buy Cloud 9s instead. That’s what I’ll be doing when my 15 year old GHDs eventually pack in!

If you have ghds from back in the day and they are not working there is someone on eBay who will refurbish them for you at a very reasonable price.
Mine had been dropped so many times over the years and he fixed everything! They are good as new now. He came recommended from a friend who had used him first and she was extremely pleased with the service also. Highly recommend.

I have thick frizzy hair and it's definitely been worse this year, it must be the weather.

I find shampoo affects my hair more than conditioner, so I always use a thick moisturising shampoo - I'm using L'Oreal Dream Lengths more than shampoo at the moment and it's on offer in boots, it's very good. I use a mask every wash, although I only wash my hair twice a week, Kerastase is my favourite. I always use hair oil, either Olaplex, Kerastase or Davines.

Rough dry my hair on a high heat but medium blow, that definitely creates less frizz prior to styling.

The product I've been using lately that is very good is an overnight treatment by Pantene called 'wake up glossy' - it's very good, I put it in my hair at night and wake up with smoother hair!

I also use a silk pillow case.

I use a hot brush to smooth rather than straighteners as the very straight sleek look doesn't suit me, I still need body and movement. I use the Revamp Pro Gloss 38mm barrel.

EvelynBeatrice · 12/08/2023 10:34

I think the L'Oreal Steampod is better for frizz. Steam puts moisture back in hair.

Rina66 · 12/08/2023 11:47

I was going to buy a Steampod @EvelynBeatrice but was put off by lots of reviewers who say the reservoir starts to smell after a little while, hence the steam smells.

I do wish there was a ‘try before you buy’ option with hair appliances, rather like you can test drive a car before you buy it?!

Tracker1234 · 12/08/2023 15:31

QVC do a try before you buy for Dyson hair products but just remember if you don’t like them YOU have to pay the postage to return and I think Dyson might allow a 30 day return. I course Dyson arent GHD’s and you won’t get anyoffers like Boots Advantage card points and recently GHD had 20% off…

I came home from shopping earlier. I have fine hair prone to frizz and curl and not in a good way and got caught in a rain shower. Got home and a bit of attention from my very old GHD’s and my hair is back to normal.

highlandcoo · 12/08/2023 18:14

I have coarse frizzy hair and a keratin treatment professionally applied at the hairdressers every six months has made a huge difference. It's so much smoother and easier to style now. Quicker to dry too.
I only use straighteners on the very top sections of hair to give a sleek finish and always use Paul Mitchell Hot Off The Press protective spray.

Pandaflop · 12/08/2023 18:15

I was going to say try cloud 9 too! Although the GHD hairdryer is still the best imo. There are cheaper brands that are decent enough but they don't tend to last as long.

NoEffingWay · 13/08/2023 12:13

Just used my ghds this morning and they are totally useless!

EvelynBeatrice · 13/08/2023 13:27

My daughter and I have had steam pods for six years now and never had an issue with a smell in the water tank! Is it an English water/limescale thing perhaps? When in England or abroad, I use filtered water in it and anyway you have to empty it out immediately after use leaving the lid open to let it dry out.

CockneySignora · 13/08/2023 13:33

I had a keratin blowdry last year and it didn’t make the slightest difference. My hair felt ‘softer’, but in a fluffy, non-sleek way, and the only thing I really noticed was that it didn’t take a blowdry, even a good salon one from my usual stylist, anywhere near as well.

I had my hair permanently straightened years ago at a cost of £400. It didn't make much difference at all. Can't remember the name of the particular treatment I had. Wish I'd never bothered though!

Zola1 · 13/08/2023 13:48

I actually don't rate GHDs any more... I love the cloud 9 wide plate

Was it Yuko? A few hairdressers have told me not to bother as it isn’t very good.
