Are GHD straighteners worth the price? Need help for really frizzy hair

My hair has become even more frizzy than usual lately. Any advice please. Any good shampoos or products I can use at home? Or are straighteners the way to go - and is it best to buy GHD ones rather than cheaper ones? Thanks

@Giantwindows thanks! That's really useful to know.

The people who used to make GHDs back in their best days sold the brand and then started Cloud 9. So if you are looking for old school GHD quality today then buy Cloud 9s instead. That’s what I’ll be doing when my 15 year old GHDs eventually pack in!

Came here to say this. My GHDs are 15+ years old but if they go then cloud 9s are where its at

PuppyMonkey · 09/08/2023 08:30

I threw caution to the wind a few years back and splashed out on Dyson Corale straighteners - they are ok and sort of better for your hair as they take larger sections and don’t heat up quite as much. But…. I find myself going back to my trusty old GHDs sometimes and my hair looks much sleeker and nicer. My GHDs are 19 years old this summer.

SilIssuesAgain · 09/08/2023 17:36

LynetteScavo
are you issuing hair oil OP? I find copious amounts of hair oil tames my frizz
I use Pantene Argan Oil and John Frieda Frizz Ease Serum. But they don't seem to help much and if I use too much it makes my hair look greasy.

Could changing my shampoo also help? I mostly use Herbal Essences bio Argan Oil Repair and John Frieda Frizz Ease conditioner.

Also what products are good for protecting your hair from heat damage when using straighteners -any recommendations?

The new ghds are shit. My originals just packed up at 15 years and the new ones aren't a patch on them, so I replaced with cloud 9 which are excellent

I agree - original GHDs were phenomenal but the new ones are crap. Cloud 9s all the way!

HarrietStyles · 09/08/2023 18:19

The original GHDs were miles ahead than all the competitors. I got my first ones in about 2003 I think and they lasted about 15 years. The newer models just don’t work the same for me, they snag and pull out my hairs and I don’t get the same smooth glide at all. I switched to Cloud 9 a few months ago and they are totally better than my GHDs and cheaper too!

FlibbertyGibbitt · 09/08/2023 18:52

If you’re curly / frizzy it’s probably the weather . I’ve found out the products I use in the winter have glycerine in which can’t cope with warmer weather .

Danikm151 · 09/08/2023 18:57

I use the tresemee heat defence spray. The bottle lasts ages!

I’ve only ever used cheaper straightners- it’s more about the technique if you can’t splash out.
thin sections and a slow run down.
with thick hair I’d advise to get a hair straightener brush 🙂

I bought a Remington pair for about £20 from Argos when my ghds stopped working and they are brilliant and have lasted for years. I would never choose ghds again.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 09/08/2023 23:48

I recommend the YouTube channel Blowout Professor. Sign up for his personalised recommended products email (no scam - he uses affiliate links but he's not selling anything.)

He's got great videos on how to get your hair to look its best.

I bought the products he recommended (Redken, mostly) from Sally Beauty and the ladies in there remarked last week that my hair looks so much better since I was first in there buying the stuff.

(I have a ton of frizzy, curly bleached hair and my goal is to somehow have long, bleached hair that doesn't look awful.)

wineandsun · 09/08/2023 23:50

Had my ghds for about 12 years and still working. I do think are they getting old in terms of the plats etc but still doing the job.

Katrinawaves · 10/08/2023 00:00

I recommend a Brazilian blow dry every 3 months and sulphate free shampoo in between times. That makes my hair really manageable with just a quick blast with the dryer (it also massively speeds up drying time).

The before and after pics in this article are a pretty good reflection of how well it works in practice. I usually get mine done by a mobile hairdresser (London based) and if costs about £120 a go but I then never need a professional blow dry in between because it always looks like it’s had a salon blow dry until the treatment eventually washes out.

I echo what others say. Old GHDs were great, new ones are rubbish. I’d get Cloud 9s.

As your hair is frizzy though, it’s likely that your hair has a natural curl/wave. Have you thought about trying to style your hair with waves/curls rather than straightening them out?

My hair is wavy/curly and I straightened it for years and years, causing lots of damage to it. Now, I style it ‘wavy’ and my hair is really healthy and less frizzy! Saves a lot of time and money as well.

The quality of GHDs has deteriorated since they were bought out a few years ago. I'm using Cloud Nine now

My Cloud 9s just died after about 5 years of heavy use, I couldn’t afford to replace them so I bought a cheap pair from Amazon as a stop gap but they are actually really good so I don’t need to save up for more expensive ones now! There are are brand called Luna.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 10/08/2023 07:42

I bought my GHD straighteners about 12 years ago and they are still going strong, they've now made their way to my teenagers bedroom who uses them almost daily.

I've bought my dd several sets of straighteners but none have lasted as long or been as good - so to answer your question, yes they are worth the money.

ResponsibleWalrus · 10/08/2023 07:48

My cloud 9's died after 3 years so I've gone back to cheaper straighteners. They were good but not worth the money for such a short shelf life. I used them 3 or 4 times a week.

SecretVictoria · 10/08/2023 07:53

No, original were great, then the quality nosedived.

I didn’t rate Cloud 9 either.

Echo the poster who suggested Brazilian blow dry, however, I did find with these, the more I had, the less effective they were. I have a pixie now as I just cannot manage my hair when long.

FatLarrysBanned · 10/08/2023 08:18

For those waiting for their old GHDs to die before they replace them Cloud 9 will give a discount of £60 on their straightners if you trade in your broken GHD, Cloud 9 or Dyson straighteners. Mine literally blew up in my hand (loose wiring) and they took them as a trade in.

They send you returns label when you check out the new straightners. Very straightforward process.

webster1987 · 10/08/2023 08:23

For those that are saying GHDs have deteriorated...one of the co-founders of GHD left the company and set up their own...Cloud 9. So probably worth looking at them instead, with other PPs saying they work!

NewDogOwner · 10/08/2023 08:28

Colour Pop For Dream Coat. It leaves your hair beautiful and sleek and weatherproof for several washes. It's a game changer.

Love my GHDs.

They didn’t work for me at all, nothing like the original GHDs 😢. I think now they don’t get to such a high temperature, so were a waste of time for me.

BiddyPop · 10/08/2023 11:48

I can't vouch for quality more recently, but I got mine as a Christmas present to myself after pondering for nearly a year. The final appointment with that hairdresser was when she announced she was leaving the business and I announced I was pg...so early summer 18 years ago.

The GHD has been well used - not daily but a lot - since then on my think, curly and prone to frizz hair and I am always happy with the results, as my style is straight and smooth.

BiddyPop · 10/08/2023 11:49

I also use the Frizz Ease range of shampoo, conditioner and serum.

Old GHDs were great, new GHDs are shit. They're manufactured in China now.

I use Cloud 9 now.

This!

My first and second pair lasted 9 years and 5 years being used every day but the second pair were nowhere near as good as the first.

I switched to cloud 9 wide plate as I have thick frizzy hair too and they are amazing, had them 3 years now.

GingerIsBest · 10/08/2023 12:04

I think with thick, frizzy (curly/wavy) hair, you really do need quality products. John Frieda always looks and sounds good but I've yet to find one that actually does what it says it will.

I'd use salon-quality shampoo and conditioners - something for dry/frizzy hair. I like KMS, L'Oreal, Redken and Kerastase and have used all of them at one time or another.

A good hair mask once a week is worth it too. We have the Aussie one which is okay, and also use a Moroccan Hair Oil one which is better (but more expensive).

Moroccan Hair Oil leave in conditioner is good and on the cheaper side, the Superdrug Argan Oil leave in conditioner is surprisingly good. But we use those on DD's hair which is both quite thick and very very curly, so you'd need to experiment to see if they're too much for your hair.

Another great leave in conditioner is the Innolux Elixir - buy on Amazon. That transformed my hair a few years ago when it was in poor condition and very frizzy as a result.
