Are GHD straighteners worth the price? Need help for really frizzy hair

My hair has become even more frizzy than usual lately. Any advice please. Any good shampoos or products I can use at home? Or are straighteners the way to go - and is it best to buy GHD ones rather than cheaper ones? Thanks

I've got crazy thick frizzy hair, and GHDs have been responsible for keeping it straight and sleek for the past 20+ years at least. I'm only on my second set in that time, so I'm happy with that "cost per use".

I've no doubt there will be other tools out there that do a good job, but I'm certainly not planning on trying any of them when these work perfectly for me and my hair.

SparkyBlue · 08/08/2023 16:14

I'm late to ghds I always used cheaper versions and I'm an absolute convert.

VimFuego101 · 08/08/2023 16:15

I have thick, frizzy, wiry hair and they're the only ones that work for me (wide plate ones).

RunItOff · 08/08/2023 21:57

Yes, they are the best.

Comedycook · 08/08/2023 21:58

I was skint when my ghds died...I bought kipozi wide plate straighteners and love them. My hair is very very thick and frizzy

Changemynamechangemyname23 · 08/08/2023 21:59

I have had the same ghds for nearly 20 years and they still work perfectly on thick, bushy frizzy hair.
I do however like cloud 9 straighteners they seem to add a lovely shine, but cannot justify buying them when my ghds are still going strong.

TorrentiallyWretched · 08/08/2023 22:02

No I don’t think they are. When they first came out they had technology that no one else had. These days there are lots of decent alternatives. After my first pair of GHDs died I switched to babyliss. Not the cheapest option, something like these.

I had to buy cheap straighteners when I was staying in a hotel and forgot my GHDs. The cheap ones were awful, better than nothing of course but GHDs rock (mine are 12 plus years old)

NoEffingWay · 08/08/2023 22:07

I had a pair of GHD golds that just weren't great for my fine, frizzy hair. Got a pair of dyson corrales and they are worth every penny, even if paying for them made me wince a bit

Snugglemonkey · 08/08/2023 22:12

My ghds are 12 years old. I love them. I have thick, difficult hair, but they make it easy.

JollyMollyPolly · 08/08/2023 22:20

I came late to ghds, always had cheap versions until this year. For me, no they are not worth the extra money, but I have quite fine naturally straight hair so I'm not the best comparison.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 08/08/2023 22:28

The last ghds I bought only lasted a couple of years, I think the quality has gone down hill sadly.

Is your hair actually curly/wavy? My thick frizzy hair is actually curly but needs a fair amount of product to bring out the curls. I loosely follow the curly girl method and rarely use hair straighteners now.

I like the cantu hair products.

Haretest · 08/08/2023 22:40

The new ghds are shit. My originals just packed up at 15 years and the new ones aren't a patch on them, so I replaced with cloud 9 which are excellent

golddustwomen · 08/08/2023 22:42

Love mine, wouldn't be without them.

StBrides · 08/08/2023 22:52

Since switching to a ghd hairdryer a few years I've found I don't need to use straighteners for frizz anymore.

For product recommendations, having tried all sorts and gone down the CGM route I find a pea sized amount of Moroccan oil and bumble & bumble gel is all I've needed.

If hair is porous and you don't wash it daily then also consider a shower cap to protect it from humidity when on non-wash days.

fetchacloth · 08/08/2023 22:55

GHD are definitely worth the premium price tag.
I've tried cheaper alternatives and they don't come close. You get what you pay for 💯.

RitzyMcFitzy · 08/08/2023 22:56

Old GHDs were great, new GHDs are shit. They're manufactured in China now.

I use Cloud 9 now.

Wellitjustgetsworse · 09/08/2023 00:20

If you like your hair straight just get it permanently straightened. Best decision I ever made with my hair no more straighteners or frizz! Yuko hair straightening if anyone interested I just go get my roots done every 9 months.

QueenBitch666 · 09/08/2023 02:10

The quality of GHDs has deteriorated since they were bought out a few years ago. I'm using Cloud Nine now

Grapewrath · 09/08/2023 08:05

cloud 9 wide plates are better than the newer GHDs. The old ghds were much better!

HollyGolightly4 · 09/08/2023 08:07

I love my ghds, I've had them for at least 15 years . Did consider upgrading them, but lots of reviews say they aren't as good as they used to be!

Azaeleasinbloom · 09/08/2023 08:12

Can’t talk to ghds , but my thick frizzy hair does well with OGX sulphate free shampoo/ conditioner/ heat protector , specifically the Argan Oil version.

I also use a sock diffuser over my hairdryer nozzle ( Amazon - about £6) which helps with the drying.

LynetteScavo · 09/08/2023 08:13

This thread has become quite focussed on straighteners - are you issuing hair oil OP? I find copious amounts of hair oil tames my frizz.

motherofbantams · 09/08/2023 08:14

I have the GhD duo (or duet) - goes wet to dry. Works for my hair perfectly.

Giantwindows · 09/08/2023 08:18

The people who used to make GHDs back in their best days sold the brand and then started Cloud 9. So if you are looking for old school GHD quality today then buy Cloud 9s instead. That’s what I’ll be doing when my 15 year old GHDs eventually pack in!
