Engagement ring broke, something new?

I got engaged to my husband rather young. We didn't have much to our names so my engagement ring was frugal with a slightly flawed diamond that I love.

Years down the line the marriage is still going strong, the ring not so much. The setting has broken. I'm certain it could be fixed but I'm toying with the idea of using the diamond as part of a new ring.

It was a solitare diamond in a white gold band. Has anyone had stones reused in a new ring? I know its how long is a piece of string but approximate costs? We aren't penniless students anymore but house renovations and babies mean I would feel silly spending too much.

What would you have done if you could redesign your rings?

It’s so nice to hear that you are thinking of using the stone in a new setting - so many people are quick to diss their original rings but they are sentimental! I will probably do the same with mine in a year or so, the stones are lovely but the setting seems to high and fragile for day to day wear.
What I would do is find a jewellery who can help with the design process and maybe source some other stones to compliment the original.
I had ring made with old stones but I didn’t supply the gold. It was £650 for the gold and labour. Probably 5 years ago. Pretty reasonable as it was made to my own specifications and is valued at around £2k. Gold prices are high at the moment, platinum seems much more reasonable.

Like you I had a cheap engagement ring..for our 17th anniversary I had this made with a diamond my dh had in a signet ring...they used the gold so it only cost £300...valued at £700...
I love it...

Such amazing tips and suggestions! Thank you all so much @Marylou62 your ring is stunning a real heirloom and @NoAprilFool, that jewellery is beautiful. Looking at custom jewellery and small, loca jewellers is making me realise how incredibly talented people are.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply :)
