Please help, I am fed up with my look - I am late forties, going grey, long frizzy hair. Over weight (but working on that...1.5 stone down already). I don't wear make up - I don't know how to make it look good!

I am on a really limited budget and just don't know how to turn it all around.

All suggestions welcome - I am fed up of being a frumpy aging woman.
Thank you

Have you been to the hairdressers for advice? Maybe get some blonde highlights. If you don't wear makeup try Trinny London - she has lots of videos and is easy to do

Aixellency · 07/08/2023 18:45

What do you need to dress for? (Lifestyle?)

What clothing size are you, roughly?

Where do you usually shop?

What’s in your wardrobe?

MumVUnicorns · 07/08/2023 19:05

Hairdressers - consultation booked in 3 weeks.

Clothing size 20 (large hips and ridiculously big boobs)

My usual shops are M&S, yours (but don't really like the quality that much) and if I'm lucky with sizes Fatface in the sale!

I'm very much a leggings with a tunic over/skirt over leggings etc. love black clothes but just bored of wearing the same thing.

I’d agree that the most important use of your budget would be to find the best hairdresser you can afford and have them sort out your hair.

Grey hair is often beautiful, but going grey is a difficult stage and can easily make one feel despairing. Get some help with both cut and colour - then you’ll see yourself differently.

Aixellency · 08/08/2023 08:25

If you’re actively trying to lose weight at the moment this may not be the best time to buy clothes - but you could try out some new accessories that might lift your spirit. New earrings once your hair is cut? Some loafers or boots?

As always - unless you run a smallholding, a weekly veg box is probably the best investment in yourself. Both your skin and your weight loss will benefit, really quite speedily.

Shops that might be fun to browse for eventual dressing inspiration could include:

Batsheva
Beyond Nine
Ganni
Marina Rinaldi
Palava
Reformation

all of which stock plus sizes and should be available on pre-owned sites at a fraction of their original price.

Clothing- stick with what you have while you drop the weight, and then when you have reached your desired goal- spend! Perhaps put a bit of money aside each week for that purpose. And a start a Pinterest where you can save looks you like. Book yourself on to a JL consultation?

if you want to update your look try a tailored shirt over a fitted top as a longer layer rather than a tunic top. More modern and chic. I’d buy white one and a khaki one.

Eyebrows waxed, shaped and tinted. Instant face lift! Eyelashes tinted and curled.

Drink loads of water and so a gua Sha lymphatic face massage everyday.

Face-
serum, moisturise, spf everyday
swrum, eye cream, moisturise every night.

weleda skin food (green tube) is the best for night cream. The ordinary Buffet is a good serum to get you started.

I would go monochrome! If you have lots of black try pairing what you have with new neutral colour, beige, grey, white, pale pink can be so flattering with black. That way you can use stuff you have and there's plenty of stuff in supermarkets that's cheap you can play around with whilst you loose your weight.

Have fun ! I've discovered charity shops again for quick impulse buys for fun and doesn't break the bank. You end up sometimes with really good quality stuff for super cheap

Ridingaroundonbuses · 08/08/2023 09:11

Weight Watchers for losing weight ( six stone down here!)

Charity shops for some pieces to tide you over.

My feet shrunk during weight loss so maybe don’t spend a lot on new shoes unless you have too.

Makeover at a makeup counter after sorting out the hair as suggested by PP.

Overthehillbutnotveryfar · 08/08/2023 09:19

Ah fantastic - it’s a great attitude to want change and yet so hard ! Like others have said - water - veg - lots of good skin care and some pampering with hair , eyebrows, lashes . Tinted moisturiser , lip gloss , mascara (or tinted lashes ) and a brush on your cheeks of a multi layered blusher - try Superdrug for affordable experimentation . Charity shops are great for in between sizes and neutral will always look classy - with maybe a bright bag or accessories . Don’t wear long floppy scarves though - my similarly endowed dear sil does this to hide her big boobs (it doesn’t ) and it just seems to drag her whole look down 🤷. A good fitting bra at any stage . Good luck and keep going !

Work out if you don't, a firmer body makes even cheap clothes look good. It will also strengthen your core muscles leading to better walk and posture which makes you look more confident. It's also free, can be done at home with a free video on youtube.

MumVUnicorns · 08/08/2023 10:14

Great thank you for your advice everyone.
I am doing WW at the moment, so plan to keep going with that.

Admittedly, I could up the water so that can be done and started today!

I plan on walking more each day, then in September when my DD is back at school start C25K so I can do it without any distractions.

Thank you for all your advice, it does sound doable!
Xx

Said it before and will say again. Bobbi Btown used to do a makeup bag refresh which was good.

Space NK also good for products/makeup.

Would you like eg Joules for some clothes? Friend a similar size likes their floral tops and Breton T-shirt dresses.
