Hi all I am after some advice from those in the know please
So firstly I am a 54 year old middle age woman due to probably the menopause my hair has become very thin.
Consequently the sides of my shoulder length hair were that much shorter than the back so before xmas I decided nothing for it but to have it cut to all one length so now just about touching my shoulders
However 8 months later a nd it has barely grown and worse still the sides are now shorter again !!
it wouldnt be so bad but next year is our 30th Wedding Anniversary we are going on a cruise a d six days after we come back my daughter gets married!!
What to do I have never had hair this short in my life and I dont like it. I have never had extensions or even had my hair dyed in the hairdressers but now I feel I need to do both
I am reluctantly prepared to wear a swimming hat on the cruise lol to protect my hair as I would like it done before we go
Does a anyone have any advice please I sont even know if my hair will take extension and colour though less worried about the colour as think I will be able to get that done
Please everyone tell me all about hair extensions and if its feasible and or viable I sont know what else to do I have heard of a weave asMrs Hinch has that !!!and ring ones is it??? It's all a minefield I know my daughter has a bayliage is it in hers I just want to cover the grey and have it long enough so it at least reaches my shoulders!!!
Grateful dor a y advice many thanks

Can't help with extensions but I've been a wig wearer for five years. Initially due to chemo but I now have med induced alopecia. I have enough hair to scrape back into a short ponytail for the gym but I wear wigs the rest of the time. So easy, I just shake, plop on my head and run a brush through. They retain their shape after washing. Could this be an option? Sunhat or scarf for during the day, wig at night.

I have this problem with the sides of my hair - I've been much more aggressive with heat styling at the front of my hair than the back, so it breaks off.
I've cut way back on the straighteners and it's improving a lot.
I am thinking of getting a couple of rows of micro/nano extensions at the front to fill it up more level with the back.

thanks I would like to increase the volume slightly as well as the length if possible and also match up the sides to the length of the back without losing the length
Not sure if I am asking the impossible here
didnt think of a wig but not sure how that would work on the cruise with swimming etc
does anyone know what is the difference between nano and micro extensions and what would be best?
Any idea of the cost?
thanks all
Finally does anyone know of anything to increase hair volume and growth shampoos etc or is it all a marketing ploy?

@orangetriangle I would recommend a hair topper instead of extensions, you can take it off and wash your hair properly and use conditioner and treatments and not worry about extensions coming out. They are expensive but last much longer so cheaper in the long run. Have a look at Perfect Fringe, I bough one last year and it looks incredibly natural, like a better version of what my hair used to look like before hormonal hair thinning.

Watch this video about hair topper -

Be wary. I had extensions for years. I went to the best salons and had so called safe methods. They do eventually ruin your own hair what ever anyone tells you and fine thinning hair is the most fragile.. Having them now and again is probably ok but the problem is you get used to the thickness. My hair was wrecked in the end and it took me a full year to grow out the damage, it started to thicken up considerably when I started HRT and taking supplements. I stopped using straighteners as well.
I would second what others have told you and look at temporary methods. Toppers and wigs are amazing today and clip in extensions for special occasions are also an option. Google hairdressers who specialise in thinning hair, they can cut and colour clip in hair to match your own hair. There are tons of options now.

My hair is very thin and I have had nano extensions for the past couple of years - I don't think I could live without them now! I don't want to wear a topper as I would hate the thought of having to take it off at night/in the house and also dislike the thought of having something placed on my head, I feel like the extensions blend in with my own hair much better and feel like part of me because they're there all the time.

I get on better with a weave it feels much more stable. The hair was about £1000 if I remember rightly and them £150 installation every 8 or so weeks. The hair lasted a few refits but it got ruined during lockdown

Ostagazuzulum · 08/08/2023 21:55

I've not used it myself but have been looking at halo hair extensions and it looks quite good and won't damage your hair and can be taken off for swimming. It has good reviews.
My hair thinned out Terri ly with menopause but lots of conditioners, hrt and it settled down. Def thinner but not as bad. I think hair extensions might damage you hair even more so in long run would cause you more issues.

Hi

You could try Link Hair which is next to Royal Docks in East London.

The whole area is full types of salons but they only do pieces wigs and extensions . I've not been in, but have walked past it and it certainly looks like it would cater for alternative styles..it looks and sounds a bit like a cool bar (music, good looking people etc....)

I have extensions for exactly this reason, my hair is fine and grows at the back but the front and side just break, I just have a few extensions on the sides and I love it
