Handbag life span

I'm a bag lover so have too many, so what always eludes me is any of my bags getting all worn in and lovely and squashy. My best friend is the total opposite , she buys a bag, uses it for everything, never swaps to another bag until it literally wears out or the zip breaks etc. She was bought a handbag as a gift once that only had top handles, she said she found it annoying , but would use it until it needed replacing. That bag took 2 years to need replacing! 2 years of annoyance. What about you guys ? Anyone here use a bag until it dies ?

Yep, me.

Yep. DH bought me a traditional looking handbag about 10 years ago. I used to use it sometimes going to work but got bored swapping my stuff from it to a cross body one that was far more useful on non-work days with DC.

So handbag languishes in a box. I buy crossbody ones from places like Primark and Shoe Express which last about 3 years. Only replace when straps break.

It varies, if I find one I really love I will use it constantly till it falls apart. Other times I will have two or three on the go in different colours, sizes, shapes etc. If they aren't working for me they go to the charity shop (mine are High St not designer).

I have one handbag i really love ( slouchy mulberry) that was bought for me by my then boyfriend ( now ex husband) at least 20 years ago. It seems to go with pretty much everything so has been my main non work handbag for all those years! It’s still going strong and has survived my divorce and many cheaper work handbags ( and whereas I got rid of a lot of my jewellery gifts from my marriage the handbag stayed!) and because of the style looks ok even a bit worn.

I lost it on public transport last year and was honestly so upset - miraculously it was handed in intact and turned up 3 months later after it had worked its way through lost property!

No, I've far too many to ever wear one out.... some are bomb proof ones like Kipling that I don't think will ever break and I've gots loads of Osprey as there is an outlet nearby. Mine aren't high end, mostly Coach, Lulu Guinness type but I've got a mix of colours/sizes. I swap them over once a month at least.

My main 'mum bag' when home is a Radley crossbody that has lasted 15 years. It's full of crumbs that I can't quite get out but it's the perfect size to carry a drink, a few snacks, change of clothes for my youngest, phone and wallet.

At work I've had to ditch all my lovely handbags in favour of a £20 comfy backpack to carry my laptop.

I'd love to have one and stick to it but I always think the next one I buy is going to be the only one I ever need....

I’m like that with coats @crochetmonkey74 - which is even worse as they take up much more space than a handbag!

dreamingofsun · 05/08/2023 09:18

yes me. cant be bothered to keep swapping stuff over. but used a cheaper one (given as a present) for a specific purpose and that lasted for about 15 wears....so cost per use was massive.

Oldraver · 05/08/2023 11:43

I've only ever had one handbag wear out and that was my cheap as chips work cat handbag
