Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

Found it. There are some lovely things on there. Has anyone ordered from them?

I’ve tried googling but can’t find the website. Do you have a link? I’m in love with that cardigan/jacket.

Iamanunsafebuilding · 26/09/2023 22:08

I bought this earlier in the year mainly cos I'm not a fan of coats, and I think it has the DA vibe

Oh I love that. It reminds me of the gorgeous knitwear that Claire wears in Outlander. I think there's a Facebook group that shares knitting patterns based on clothes worn in the show.

Hello @Darklane and welcome to the best thread on Mumsnet 😁 (with the nicest people 🤗)!
That's a good call about antique shops for jewellery - I hadn't thought of that. I really love a brooch - something almost rebellious about it as it is so far out of the modern look.
I will keep an eye out for brown cardigans for you. I think some shops are reticent about brown colours as not everyone goes for them. But I love rich chocolate brown or dark rusty tan. Mixed with navy or dark olive green, the colours are so louche and luxuriant.

Brooches ARE rebellious; you're absolutely right!
And yes to hats, always.

Can I ask what the quality is like please? Just had a look at the website and it always makes me suspicious when the images don't show the models' faces. Reminds me too much of Shein and my daughter has been badly ripped off by them.

OK, who posted about Chanel lipstick? I decided to treat myself to one as an early birthday present and I'm blaming this thread as I never normally wander towards the high end makeup counters...

RedLem0nade · 27/09/2023 13:42

Not guilty @MoltenLasagne but I got given a Chanel nail polish once as a Secret Santa present (budget was €30) and it was amazing! Went on so smooth, colour incredible, lasted well. My go-to for ages. Also my go-to Secret Santa purchase for others!

It was me.........lashings of apologies!
When is your birthday? Mine is 02/10, but this year I haven't bought one. Yet.................

MoltenLasagne · 27/09/2023 14:50

Mine is weeks away still! I really have no excuse but at least I have a lovely deep red lipstick to transition into autumn...

@Paperclipped I like the sound of your wardrobe! Yes Margaret Howell is a good shout. I hadn't heard of The Knotty Ones so thanks for that. Not cheap though! I might be able to knit similar jumpers myself, so a great website for ideas.
Men's cashmere jumpers also a good thought.
I prefer skirt and dresses to trousers in the winter and I love boots and also partial to a brown leather belt. I have a couple of nice leather satchel type bags already.
I have a nice kilted skirt from Celtic and Co and just thinking that some dark tartan could be a good part of the look, but in a less traditional version.
I'm picturing something a bit Edwardian/Victorian rather than the more American preppy look I think.

I think your look is veering in the direction of casual steampunk or steampunk lite.

I need everyone's expert advice. How do I wear silver, leather loafers with a lowish block heel? They're so beautiful but not sure how to work them into my DA aesthetic? Would they work with black opaques?

I have those gun metal grey ones I posted pics off up thread, but when I try them with black tights and a knee length dress/skirt, I feel they stray into nanny Mcfee territory. Possibly best to embrace the look and go for navy/burgundy wooden tights? And go shorter on the skirt to make it more edgy.

Divebar2021 · 27/09/2023 20:41

Hi all ….. I’ve had a busy few days so have only made a little bit of progress… I went too early last week for a long navy pleated skirt and cashmere sweater and nearly died wearing a dark green coat with it. Too hot! too hot! Nice combo though.
My boots from Toast arrived and they’re great but…… but the shoe box was torn and battered. Would you feel a bit disappointed about that? I feel a bit let down… those boots were £325 😬

As for silver loafers …. Im not sure if they’re light silver or more pewter. I’d try a dark grey / pewter if you want tights but nice socks might work. I tried to do navy socks and lace ups with my pleated shirt but it looked very “off” on me but I shall keep trying. ( skirts need to be long and trousers short imo)

Finally….brooches. I quite like multiple old fashioned brooches on a jacket lapel. I’ve got a killer vintage brooch of a gold leopard which looks good on black velvet. Charity shops are good for these.

Bookist · 27/09/2023 21:09

The loafers are definitely silver not pewter. Tried them with black opaques and it looked a bit too Blake's Seven for my liking. Also my beautiful kilt, as suggested by the clever Darklane arrived but it's just too prickly to wear sadly. I hate that I'm so sensitive to wool.

But in some good news, look at this beautiful Zara dress that fell into my basket today. Only £3 in a charity shop and still with the tags on! The colours are gorgeous, a deep claret and forest green. Love the leg o mutton sleeves and tight cuffs x

Can I join? I love this style but don't suit most of the colours. Also can't stand scratchy things like tweed!

Hello tribe, I have fallen off the thread for the past week but have caught up now and wanted to share my latest charity shop finds. Do we think they fit the bill? Any outfit ideas?

Welcome! The thread has been quiet this week but will hopefully pick up again as we head towards peak Autumn (1st October this weekend yay!).

helenahandcart78 · 29/09/2023 12:38

@Bookist you've painted a picture there with the Blake's Seven reference! Might be better to stick to trousers or even culottes with them?

helenahandcart78 · 29/09/2023 12:39

Just to add, the hunt for brooches continues...none in the shop I was in today but I've made it my mission to build up a stash. Any inspo brooch pics welcome!

highlandcoo · 29/09/2023 14:48

That's a lovely brooch @BangingOn

And cardigan @Doyoureallyhavetoask

@helenahandcart78 you have found some brilliant clothes there. The charity shops where I live are nothing like as good .. or maybe someone else is getting there first!

I've just bought two pair of cord trousers; one navy and one cream ( probably not very DA but you don't need to be DA every day do you? And they'll look good with a brown jumper I'm planning to knit soon )

I really need some nice boots now. Will be going along to Lanx in a couple of weeks and will report back ..

@highlandcoo I think it's probably down to frequency of visits with me!

@BangingOn that brooch is gorgeous and actually not something I would have thought of but you're right, it does make a statement!

I'm keen on the idea of culottes, but do you wear tights under them? x
