I want to be glamorous!

I have definitely let myself go in the name of comfort but I need to claw this back. Please can anyone suggest a few things that will help without spending a fortune?

I broke my foot so can no longer wear heels which definitely isn't helping.

Can you suggest any glamorous flat shoes?

Thank you!

Well the difference there might be Lanvin vs Original Choice

I don’t know that I’d call her glamorous though. Glamour needs an element of sexiness imho and that’s really not her angle

My mind is blown by the idea of Tilda Swinton not being sexy.

NatashaDancing · 27/07/2023 21:43

I don't think glamorous needs sexiness anyway. See again Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn.

Tilda Swinton is stunning here.

She was a very glamorous White Witch too.

A lovely pedicure with maybe a toe ring and an anklet can really make someone look put together and somewhat glamorous. Chunky sandals are in. Perhaps a pair of DMs or rose gold Birkenstocks and a floaty maxi dress with your hair in a high bun or curled and some red lipstick?

Oceanus · 27/07/2023 21:51

As anyone said white shirts and trench coats? Pencil skirts (when they're right for your body shape they look super glam imho with heels). Hats (the more structured ones) look very high end in some people.

🙇🏼‍♀️ obviously she is erotic, sensual, beautiful and magnetic-but I don’t agree that her style is glamorous, and while her red carpet style ticks a lot of the boxes listed in this thread (thoughtful, polished, expensive, poised) I’d argue that what it’s not is sexy. I’m working my my way towards a definition where glamorous is style with just a tiny, tiny hint of trash! The queen was never glamorous regardless of the diamonds, nor is Kate. Angelina Jolie, on the other hand…

Arabels · 27/07/2023 21:54

But we’ve drifted off to fantasyland, no-one dresses for the red carpet in real life (I know Swindon spends a lot of time in heavy woollens).

Oceanus · 27/07/2023 21:55

@Auntieofdragons 100% with the floaty maxis and the red lipstick (the right colour is wow wow wow) but even if I died and reincarnated as Claudia Schiffer I'm not sure I'd be able to get away with anklets and toe rings!

GalileoHumpkins · 27/07/2023 22:00

Tilda Swinton is an absolute goddess, definitely glamorous in her own unique way.
Can you still buy toe rings? Aren't they considered more hippy (Phoebe from Friends) than glamorous?

That's fascinating. Are you attracted to women, out of interest? I don't mean that in any pointed way at all, just wondering because I have a hunch her brand of 'sexy' isn't one that straight women get very much.

Would you say Billy Porter is glamorous? I think he can be, and in a similar, 'I am a queen and above the rules of male/female dressing' kind of way.

Absolutely agree the queen was never glamorous, nor is Kate. I'm not sure about Angelina. I think British classic style (as in, the queen etc.) is definitively not glamorous because it is so carefully polite/socially controlled. It says 'I am wearing this dress because I - or a team of dressers - thought very carefully about whether or not it was appropriate, how it would look if it rained, what messages it might send, whether it would crinkle when I sat down ...'.

IMO glamour is partly about being able to rise above your environment - so either you decide you don't care that it's raining and you style it out, or you choose something fabulous that doesn't look like a compromise.

Oceanus · 27/07/2023 22:07

My idea of glam leans more to classic and fab that Kim Kardashian. Based on that, every single time I watch Murder She Wrote I look at some of the pieces that Jessica wore and I think "wow I could wear that today and still look amazing". I look at some of the stuff that Armani and Lagerfeld did decades ago and I think "wow, that looks fab and I could wear that today".
Recently (and this is based off another thread really) I saw My Life is Murder and I watched all seasons together. It's amazing how I got to the third season and it's like Lucy Lawless underwent the most amazing transformation. Seasons 1 and 2 she looked fine but season 3 it's like "Holy Moley I wish I could be dressed by whoever dressed you!". She looks glam though in a less traditional way (lots of colour) but it all fits like a glove, it all goes together in such a beautiful way like every single piece was made to be worn together. If she walked past me I'd staring, without a doubt.

Dinopawus · 27/07/2023 22:13

To me glamorous is impractical. High heels, white trousers or bold colours, flappy sleeves, gorgeous dry-clean only fabrics, that are generously cut so that they swish impeccable hair, either blow dried or put up, confident make up and most of all attitude.

It's not neat camel colours clothes with discreet jewellery. It's the next level putting on the ritz. It's Marilyn Monroe & Rita Hayworth in their diamonds. Not Angela Rippon in a twinset & pearls.

I think you can wear flat shoes, but id go for leather loafers or brogues or even low heeled courts if you can wear them (Gabor and Van Dal worth a look). Then I'd glam up everything else, so big hair and a swishy coat, wide legged trousers, a shell top and chunky jewellery, or an impactful, elegant maxi dress. Add bright red lipstick, perfume and go and have fun.

I think we are at a weird point in relation to glamour.

No-one really dresses that glamorous in everyday life- sure, there may be a bit of ironic red lippy and gold hoops and so on going on, but old-style glamour in the day, or even the evening, I don't see it so much. Not in the office style of the pencil skirt, high heels, tight dresses (Jane Norman, anyone?) It would be hard to style out even fake fur, I have some lovely fake fur coats I didn't bother wearing last winter.

The only place you see that type of glamour is celebrities going out. It just seems so opposite to what people are wearing in the day, which is rarely tight clothing (ok, crop tops), baggy/deconstructed stuff and trainers.

I don't know where I'd wear anything 'glamorous' these days, people don't dress up on nights out so much (as we are told continuously on here!)

TheOGCCL · 27/07/2023 22:20

To me glamorous was always the opposite of practical, so definitely heels, maybe patent, Louboutin style, smart coat, maybe faux fur, wool, definitely nothing waterproof. For me, being truly glamorous is to be able to take taxis everywhere.

These days however people use the word more liberally and in a sea of people wearing trainers, tracksuits and things not far off their pajamas, if you have on a dress or lipstick or leather shoes they might think you are glamorous. I'd say that's more stylish (which has plenty of threads) not glamorous.

FlamingoQueen · 27/07/2023 22:35

I am commenting because I also want to be glamorous but am tired so will read properly in the morning!

Haha! This does make glamour a little harder. Some fabulous patent chunky boots in winter. But for now? Crisp white trainers?

MaryLennoxsScowl · 27/07/2023 22:51

What is your lifestyle like, OP? Are you aiming for glamorous while sitting in an office or when meeting friends or looking after small kids or lying on the sofa? (The sofa is easy - oversized silk pyjamas in rich colours and patterns, sliding off one shoulder or giving a deep décolletage, or a beautiful kimono.)

I’m also struggling with footwear, sever bunions and repetitive broken little toes.

I would argue that Kate in her gold dress at the recent Bond premiere was the epitome of glamour.

Westfacing · 28/07/2023 05:45

I saw a young woman today who was pushing a buggy: slight tan, shoulder length thick blonde hair, wide-ish oaty coloured linen trousers, close fitting but not tight white top which was short sleeved broderie anglais, light grey trainers, and with a tiny bit of midriff showing. So three shades of pale.

She was the epitome of glamour, expensive glamour!

Fishwiife · 28/07/2023 06:16

Loafers glamorous???

watersprites · 28/07/2023 06:50

Glamour to me is grown up, impractical but pulling it off. I do i think you have to have presence & good. Yes to Liz Taylor, red carpet Angelina, 90s supermodels,

I think Mina in and just like that is very glam

watersprites · 28/07/2023 07:01

Glamour is about colour, bold jewellery not beige clothes & dainty jewellery.

Mary janes can be glamorous but much harder to pull off!

watersprites · 28/07/2023 07:02

You do need good hair, no one is glamorous with lank, stringy hair.
