I want to be glamorous!

I have definitely let myself go in the name of comfort but I need to claw this back. Please can anyone suggest a few things that will help without spending a fortune?

I broke my foot so can no longer wear heels which definitely isn't helping.

Can you suggest any glamorous flat shoes?

Thank you!

Unless you are in the first bloom of youth then I think it’s the basics that take some effort that make the difference but as a PP says a routine really helps

Hair - As Hilary says, hair matters. It needs to be groomed (even if it’s tousled groomed) and shaped. Regular cuts. Experiment with what products/routine works for you and them do it.

Teeth - white ish and even ish. Save up to get fixed if needed.

Eyebrows shape your face. Get them shaped regularly (I think threading is best) and colour in as needed.

Nails. No need to be ‘done’ but keep them tidy and even.

Good glasses if you wear them.

Small shiny earrings help like up your face and create a generally groomed impression.

A decent bag. Doesn’t need to be fancy.

A decent coat.

posture as PP says. Yoga ladies always seem to have good posture and movement.

Smile. Poss yoga also helps with this? Tell me if you find out.

I think Mary Janes over the age of 6 are very wrong, but there are may more comfortable and flat shoes than ever - I like Fly London and Fit Flop have some good basics

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/07/2023 21:27

Decent fitting bra and pants for a start.
Don't wear your clothes too tight. The sausage skin look isn't flattering.

SocksAndTheCity · 26/07/2023 21:31

I might order the cat shoes 😀

NatashaDancing · 26/07/2023 21:36

Most of the tips here aren't about being glamorous tho'. They're conflating how not to look like a scruff bag with looking glamorous - but they're not the same thing.

Allwelcone · 26/07/2023 21:43

Missed the shoes link! Doh.
I'm quite skint but look round glam shops in my lunch hour for ideas on outfit and colour combos, which I then rip off on the cheap from charity shops or sainsburys.
For me it's in the details eg belts, jewellery and eyebrows as well as the cut of clothes which could be simple and good quality fabric and in fab condition if buying second hand.
Min make up, good hair, white teeth and of course great shoes.

So glamorous to me means something a bit amazing or really well put together I guess. Maybe everyone's definition is different.

Arabels · 26/07/2023 21:46

Hair. Have good hair. Find what works for your texture and be incredibly precious with it.

Shoes-if you need flat go for mannish and French, flat and ‘feminine’ always looks frumpy. Loafers over ballerinas, or simple trainers eg Spring Court, Adidas Gazelles. Leave those chunky foam things to the kids.

GalileoHumpkins · 26/07/2023 21:49

Oceanus · 26/07/2023 21:08

Is anyone shocked it was removed?! There was no need to mock anyone. I posted the most hideous pair of heeled crocs on a wedding post the other day. It was by accident, obviously, not deliberate. Fortunately the OP saw the funny side... after the initial shock!

The shoes were quite rightly mocked, the shoes not the person that posted them 🙄

SocksAndTheCity · 26/07/2023 21:52

As much as I love my many pairs of Adidas Gazelles, they are not in any way 'glamorous'.

I don't think trainers ever look glamorous. Loafers possibly but depending on the type.

Audrey Hepburn made flat feminine ballet pumps a signature look.

If you can't afford to whiten your teeth: MAC Ruby Woo (mind you this is a red so you might not feel comfortable at first).
@NatashaDancing Hijacking this thread to say: https://modcloth.com/collections/shoes/products/hello-kitty-rainbow-flat-multi I see your siamese ones and raise you a sequined kitty 😉

If you removed the Hello Kitty faces those sparkly sequinned pumps are far more glamorous than a pair of trainers or dull, masculine loafers.

Yes agree. Glamour to me is red lipstick, fitted clothing, big hair, big earrings and a proper mani-pedi.

Glamorous flats are very high quality ballerina shoes with proper support, narrow leather loafers with nice detailing or strappy leather sandals. Ask yourself - would Princess Di, Sophia Loren or Audrey Hepburn wear these shoes? If not, then avoid.

Oceanus · 26/07/2023 22:19

It was a joke for you to match your cats. The OP has serious foot issues she's unlikely to pick a pair of either loafers of regular ballerinas. But I quite like the Hello Kitty ones. Can't wear them either for the OP's reasons but if I could I would... with the Hello Kitty face proudly on to match my Hello Kitty knickers if I had them which I'm not saying I do.
Jokes aside, I don't think glam necessarily means only "classic things". I think depending on age, one can always have a bit of fun.

I know it was a joke but they're actually quite wearable.

I completely agree glamorous doesn't mean understated glossy classic.

It was half a joke then because I would wear them too if I could but with the Hello Kitty on. If you've got it, flaunt it!

SarahAndQuack · 26/07/2023 22:42

I suspect we all mean different things by 'glamorous' (for me 'big hair' does not suggest glamour!).

But, FWIW, for me glamorous would be: think about what you love to wear for a slightly posh event, and give yourself permission to wear it anyway. Think about the one thing that you secretly hanker after- whether it's a gorgeous fabric or a really lovely, impractical, eye-catching colour or a piece of fabulous jewellery - and try to buy it or remind yourself you can wear it. For example, last winter I had a pair of flats in an emerald green snakeskin print which my would have made my mother make a face. Wearing them on the school run made me feel great - I felt as if I might be en route to a fabulous party rather than, erm, work.

IMO it's a bit like that saying about not keeping your fancy china for best. If you have stuff you love, wear it; if you don't, buy something really gorgeous and wear it even if it's a little bit smarter than was called for. It'll make you feel happy.

I also agree with the poster who said that a great coat will always make you feel glamorous.

Middleagedmeangirls · 26/07/2023 22:44

Diamonds. Shiny hair. Either a swishy blowdry or a groomed up do. Heels. red lipstick, glowing skin, good eyebrows.

ChilliPB · 26/07/2023 22:47

To me glamorous is about looking a bit special/interesting/unusual. Some of the tips to me are more ‘well groomed’ but not necessarily glam. A glam woman might wear beautiful fabrics or have amazing hair. Or red lipstick or red nails. But it’ll be something a little out of the ordinary, something memorable. It’s not a single thing but an attitude and approach - not being limited to what’s practical or functional, wearing clothes for enjoyment or make up for fun.

And iron your clothes.
Don't wear anything that looks like you could yomp across the moors or walk your dog..... unless you are walking your dog across the moors. Ballet flats woukd not work in this situation.

Agree with this. Especially the coats! Imagine the difference between wearing a beautiful faux fur coat on a cold day rather than a sensible puffer.

I agree with this. I lusted after a cashmere MaxMara coat in a totally impractical pale stone colour. I started off being precious about wearing it and then thought, life is now, not in the future. I wear it often and feel fabulously glamorous in it.

Sunglasses seem to propel outfits into the glamorous category for me.

Oceanus · 26/07/2023 22:52

Wow, how could I forget the sunglasses?! Totally agree. The right pair makes all the difference!

northstarry · 26/07/2023 23:12

I'm so pleased I asked this here - thanks for all tips - if nothing else it's really making me think. My post stems from someone remarking how glamorous someone else was the other day. It made me want to make more of an effort.

The thing is, I can throw on a lovely tweed coat and my dubarrys and yomp across the moors and feel so typical farmers wife unglamorous, simply by adding a silk scarf and fedora and I'm suddenly sashaying across the moors Sophia Loren style. It's the small tweaks for me 😁
