Help me with work clothes!

A boring one - sorry! I’m a teacher and starting a new job in September. My previous job had a uniform (it’s a private school abroad where this is normal) so never had to worry about getting dressed! The dress code for the new school is smart casual, with jeans and sneakers being acceptable due to young students, but would need to be paired with some type of blouse / shirt / smart sweater.

I have a selection of nice blouses and shirts, but no clue what type of trousers to pair them with. Skinny jeans are, I hear, horribly out of fashion now which I’m glad of as they don’t suit me. My body shape is more ‘rectangle’ than anything else and skinny jeans emphasised this.

Please can someone help me with jeans or trousers and a shoe combo that can pair with smart but casual blouses? I honestly have no idea about shoes. I always just wear converse, Birkenstocks and DMs, depending on the season. Birkenstocks are out (I live abroad and they’re considered house shoes!) but can I wear converse and DMs with shirts/blouses and jeans? And if so what kind of jeans? And if not then what shoes do I buy?

Its currently boiling where I am now, and will still be hot in September, but by October and November will be chilly and December and January freezing, so I’d like some things that can be used for all the seasons.

Help me, I’m hopeless with shopping. Have tried reading online but am honestly still clueless. Size 12 if relevant!

Jeans and trainers are acceptable?

I have never seen any teacher in the uk wearing this

The OP does not work in the UK.

I’d have said loafers would be the most versatile footwear - they epitomise ‘smart casual’, and work well with trousers. As to where to buy trousers or jeans that really depends on your budget.

I'd just go for black straight cut jeans and black trainers/ loafers, with a more colourful patterned top or blouse. In Summer I might swap the jeans for some black linen trousers and wear thin canvas trainers rather than thicker/ leather ones.

If you like converse then just get all black converse, they look smart enough.
