DD needs dark suit for 6th form

DD is starting 6th form in September and needs a plain, formal dark suit - jacket plus either skirt or trousers. Both pieces have to match. I don’t want to spend a fortune on this as it won’t be worn every day. Any ideas for places to try?

Dorothy Perkins have a few blazers on sale. If you go with a basic black blazer then it will be easy to find coordinating black trousers or skirt.

Next are great for suits.

igivein · 23/07/2023 19:26

M&S do suits that are machine washable, so no dry cleaning costs.

HippyChickMama · 23/07/2023 19:27

Try Vinted, lots of suits on there

BadlydoneHelen · 23/07/2023 19:27

M and S?

Chersfrozenface · 23/07/2023 19:30

When my DD was in sixth form, so office work wear dress code, I bought her clothes from Peacocks and supermarkets.

I certainly wasn't going to pay Next and M&S prices for stuff she'd never wear outside school.

These days I'd also look in Matalan

Riverlee · 23/07/2023 19:30

Next was my first thought.

Also, look at clearance section on Next online ( scroll across tabs, eg woman, men etc, it’s on the right), just purchase dc a nice blazer half price there for a wedding

TU do some reasonable suits for 6th form. Most come with both a skirt and trouser option - given they are cheap perhaps buy one of each so she can ring the changes?

Monsoon has some matching jackets and trousers in the sale - the Lauren jacket and trousers are £21 each I think and they have a midi skirt that might be same the fabric too.

Mommybunny · 23/07/2023 19:34

Thanks for the suggestions - the M&S “school uniform” option looks good - she’s 5’4” and a size 10-12. But their sizes only come up by age - what “age” would fit that size?

Will also look at the other suggestions.

Vinted lots of people buy them and then sell them. Friend bought her ds's on there 6th form

A full matching suit is a rare find beyond the law courts nowadays - surely?

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 23/07/2023 20:19

I 5ft 1 in tall and weigh 52kg. My standard size is 8-10 and I wear 13-14 in M&S kids dept so your daughter would prob need a 'size' age 16.

FlamingYam · 23/07/2023 20:57

Primark and Tesco are perfectly good quality. Prior to covid, I got all of my blazers from here.

StressedCats · 23/07/2023 20:59

I got a few from eBay as women who work in offices don’t seem to buy many suits sonce
covid- just sixth form girls. Even the massive 2
floor M&S didn’t have a single women’s suit when we went last summer.

Jobalob · 23/07/2023 21:13

We have a couple of £30 black blazers from H&M and skirts from new look schoolwear and M&S. All the girls seem to wear this. Will try to find links

but with the zip at the back

h&m black blazer women's. Can’t get the link without it going to the app but it’s £32.99

I did think the skirts were too short but the school haven’t complained and they’re all in good condition and will last for year 13 too. Private school which is prob irrelevant except they tend to get all over excited about uniform but haven’t objected to this combination

Primark

jasminsweetpea · 23/07/2023 21:45

Suit Direct - good range of sizes, online option & very reasonable.

jasminsweetpea · 23/07/2023 21:45

Oops sorry - just read it was for you daughter!

fatbottomgirl67 · 23/07/2023 22:24

H and M were fantastic for my DD's

Mommybunny · 23/07/2023 22:35

I looked at Vinted but it was difficult finding full suits for women - which was weird as my DS got a great TM Lewin dinner suit for £25 and there were loads to choose from. eBay looks a bit more promising. Will also go to M&S tomorrow on Oxford Street to see if there is anything there. Machine washable is a great feature to have!
