Mad to wear saltwaters in Rome?

Justkoko · 21/07/2023 09:05

Just looking at my sandals as off to Rome for a few nights and need versatile as well as comfy. I'm not sure how cobbly/uneven parts of the city might be so want something suitable for lots and lots of walking. Would I be mad to wear saltwater sandals? (Thin soled ones) I find them very comfy but pottering around here isn't necessarily the same as touring Rome. I have tevas but they are less smart for the evening. I have docs but they are quite heavy tbh.
I'd like some sort of slight heel that's stylish and smart yet super comfy. Looking at wedges they all seem very solid soles and too high so I'd be unstable (hypermobile).

Any suggestions welcome!

There are cobbles everywhere. Literally everywhere. I love my SWs but I couldn’t wear them there. I spent the entire time in trainers.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 21/07/2023 09:10

I alternate fitflops and my adidas trainers for city breaks. Currently away and doing around 25,000 steps a day. I have Tevas but they’ve stayed at home this time.

CorBlimeyGovnr · 21/07/2023 09:11

I’d wear trainers!

viques · 21/07/2023 09:12

Agree, comfy trainers in the day, shoes in the evening ( also gives your trainers a chance to air out a bit!). You can’t do anything except walk in Rome, it’s part of the charm , so your feet should be a priority. Plus no one is going to be checking out how smart your feet look during the day, but the slightest hint of a blister from the wrong shoes will really impact on your holiday.

I just had to look up what saltwater sandals are. They look great, are they comfortable?

creasedclothes · 21/07/2023 09:20

You need shoes than you can properly walk in. Last time we were in Rome I seem to remember doing things like 5-7 km some days( think that's right😬😆) . Up and down steps, for example visiting churches etc. You need footwear which doesn't slip and has a decent sole.

Magpiecomplex · 21/07/2023 09:23

I did Rome in Hotter Tourist sandals and they were great. I think they might be in the sale at the moment too.

WeRateSquirrels · 21/07/2023 09:31

I have walked many miles in many cities in my Saltwaters, but if you're not used to it, I wouldn't recommend.

PenguinTattoo · 21/07/2023 09:34

I have had my SW's for at least 5 years and find them comfy for day to day stuff, but anything over 10,000 steps a day and I get a weird blister on the pad just below my toes. So I'd say no. But I have started popping them in my bag to change into as they are so lightweight if I'm going somewhere where my rainbow tevas might be a bit OTT, like a smart restaurant.

Lived in Birkenstocks in Rome, so comfy!

TheBirdintheCave · 21/07/2023 09:52

I would do it but then I spent a week walking around Lisbon in heels so... maybe I'm not the best judge of appropriate holiday footwear 😂

Justkoko · 21/07/2023 10:12

Trainers are ideal but can't stand my feet being too hot!

I've done Rome in Birkenstocks, walking at least 30,000 steps daily with no issues. I've recently visited Istanbul, which also has many cobblestones and hills wearing Tevas. Tevas are slightly more comfortable.

thedevilinablackdress · 21/07/2023 11:26

Tevas during the day, Saltwaters at night would be my plan. Usually do all my walking in the day time and then potter to a restaurant at night.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 21/07/2023 11:56

You need something more supportive. You will walk miles a day on often uneven cobbles. I ended up in pain wearing Sketchers for one day as although cushioned they weren't supportive. Saltwaters with the thin flat sole would be murder.

I would really recommend Birkenstocks. The firm footbed really protects your foot from the cobbles and they have support and shock absorbing.

The first time I went to Rome I wore ankle boots and I still remember WAILING at my then-boyfriend for the audacity of him going for a poo in the airport leaving me standing with the luggage because my feet were FUCKED.

The last time I went to Rome I think we clocked about 30K steps a day. Go for the comfiest shoes that you can and I recommend having a second pair in your bag as I find changing my shoes when my feet get tired seems to help immensely.

LMNT · 21/07/2023 12:08

It’s too hot for trainers.

Sketchers yoga foam sandals are extremely comfy and cool in the heat.

Saurus72 · 21/07/2023 12:14

Have you tried the thicker soled Saltwaters? Like these and These?

i love the original Saltwaters but I can’t walk any real distance in them. The thicker soles ones are just as comfy and brilliant for both uneven/cobbly surfaces. I walked 15k+ a day in them on holiday recently and they were fantastic.

Definitely trainers!

Justkoko · 21/07/2023 12:47

Have got cushioned saltwaters but they're bright blue so not sure if they'll go with everything....trying my best to pack light! I'll prob end up taking more shoes than anything else at this rate!

Another vote for Birkenstocks - I've a bronzey/goldy pair of Madrids that go with pretty much everything and at a push are nice enough for evenings unless it's somewhere dressy. In reality I'll often have day and evening Birkies though if I can fit an extra pair in.

RampantIvy · 21/07/2023 13:39

You will walk miles in Rome, so comfort over style for daytime wear is essential. I wore Skechers trainers, and was very pleased I did, but it was October and 21 degrees. I would probably wear the Tevas and take something more dressy for the evening, although I didn't notice people dressing up much for the evening either.

Okaydonkey · 21/07/2023 18:49

Ugg sandals have padded squishy insoles and very comfortable for walking around in.
I mean this style- not silly ones

Keykat · 21/07/2023 19:09

You might like to try these. I have them and they are a dream to walk in, plenty of arch support and adjustable for the swollen feet hot days. Will take you from day to night I'd say in the kind of neutral walnut colour which I have.

How long are you going to be there? I would take a choice. I have worn both Saltwaters and Birkies walking miles in Paris and personally I prefer Saltwaters. You are all making me want Tevas though. I can categorically say not Vejas though, I walked 10k in them in London and it almost broke me.
