Mad to wear saltwaters in Rome?

Just looking at my sandals as off to Rome for a few nights and need versatile as well as comfy. I'm not sure how cobbly/uneven parts of the city might be so want something suitable for lots and lots of walking. Would I be mad to wear saltwater sandals? (Thin soled ones) I find them very comfy but pottering around here isn't necessarily the same as touring Rome. I have tevas but they are less smart for the evening. I have docs but they are quite heavy tbh.
I'd like some sort of slight heel that's stylish and smart yet super comfy. Looking at wedges they all seem very solid soles and too high so I'd be unstable (hypermobile).

Any suggestions welcome!

Have got cushioned saltwaters but they're bright blue so not sure if they'll go with everything....trying my best to pack light! I'll prob end up taking more shoes than anything else at this rate!

What are the bottoms of the soles like on those? Do they have any grip, or are they smooth, like classic saltwaters? I love how they look, but I can't wear the originals because I go flying (have a disability affecting walking). Saltwaters with a grippy sole would be the dream!

Saltwaters make my feet ache after an hour or so they as so flat and so dangerous with a lack of tread.

I would wear Skechers sandals.

nancy75 · 21/07/2023 19:34

I fully buggered both Achilles tendons wearing mine to tour around Rome, still suffering a year later. I think you need something with a bit more support

Fedupwitheveryone · 21/07/2023 19:57

went to Rome two weeks ago and walked 20,000 steps/day. Wore Stan Smiths and am soooo glad i had something sturdy. And just today went to get a proper massage to remove the last of the knots from my calves :-)

wear trainers during the day, take SW sandals for evening - we got caught in a huge rainstorm so i was very glad to have a second option to change into

KittyMcKitty · 21/07/2023 19:59

My dd’s just come back from Rome and said there was a lot of broken glass so they didn’t wear sandals really because of this.

PeriwinkleForever · 21/07/2023 21:16

i wore my saltwaters for five days in rome a couple of months ago and they were absolutely perfect. We were doing about 22-26,000 steps per day and my (boardwalk style) sw did the job. I take them and superga for walking city breaks and have no issues.

(I seem to recall we had this convo a few months ago too and I recommended the tan ones precisely as they go with everything 🤣)

Clymene · 21/07/2023 21:19

The issue with sw is not so much the comfort, it's that they've got no grip and on uneven worn cobbles, they're really unsafe. I nearly went arse over tit a couple of times in a Mallorcan hill village so I haven't worn them on that kind of holiday since. Tevas or similar would be a better bet.

RampantIvy · 21/07/2023 21:21

and I recommended the tan ones precisely as they go with everything

Tan goes with nothing I wear.

We were in Rome this time last year and the black basalt cobble stones give out an immense amount of stored up heat, so much you could feel it coming through thin soled sandals. We wore trainers most of the time for walking around.

90yomakeuproom · 21/07/2023 21:26

I went to Rome in converse and no idea why but they blistered my feet like crazy! I went into a shoe shop and bought some sketchers slip on trainers. They were an absolute dream on my feet.

BronnauMawrion · 21/07/2023 21:31

I just did a week in Manhattan in Saltwaters, but obviously the paving is a little different in Rome!

Hbh17 · 21/07/2023 21:33

Wear trainers on the plane, so there's no issue with luggage. You can't walk around Rome all day in sandals.

Jowak1 · 21/07/2023 22:07

I'm going to Rome on Thursday and I'm planning to take my Birkenstocks. They are so comfy and go with my linen trousers, skirts and dresses.

otherwayup · 21/07/2023 22:09

I wore mine for a day spent walking in Rome recently. I was on my feet for hours and did so much walking and was fine.
I do find them incredibly comfortable though generally!

bingohandjob · 22/07/2023 08:00

Went to Rome this June in 28° heat - took my comfiest trainers, lightly padded trainer socks, packet of Compeed and a blister stick everywhere in my bag and a pair of 'smarter' sandals for the evening.. Didn't wear the sandals once. Walked around 18k a day. Not one blister. Didn't feel uncomfortable wearing my trainers with nicer dresses in the evening to restaurants and a classical concert. My feet were very, very grateful. They were quite lightweight, airy Adidas so didn't get too hot. Made very good use of running my wrists under the plentiful water foundations to cool down and fill me water bottle. It's an amazing city, hope you love it - each to their own but the thought of wearing my SWs on the cobbles makes my feet throb just thinking about it.

Hiking sandals with the thickest soles you can find.

You will see some Roman women wandering about in heels but I think you have to be born to it.

Everyone else has dressed for practicality and not style.

PerspiringElizabeth · 22/07/2023 08:14

Tevas for walking and salt waters for whenever you wanted to be fancier - dinner etc. Assuming the issue is that you won’t be going back to hotel to change so that’s why I suggested Tevas - will fit in bag easily.

SirChenjins · 22/07/2023 08:20

Trainers 100%. I started off in sandals and by the end of the first day I had to borrow my DD’s spare trainers. The cobbles, glass, litter, general city grime and so on require something sturdy, comfy and supportive. No way could I have walked 1000s of steps in that over the week in my Birkenstocks or other sandals.

cunningartificer · 22/07/2023 08:22

Ecco walking sandals. Amazingly comfortable without needing to be worn in and have enough bounce to cope with Roman cobbles!

ButterCrackers · 22/07/2023 08:26

Get some trainers. I wear Sketchers that have ventilation in the fabric. The pavements and pedestrian areas will have rubbish on the ground, uneven cobblestones and just general dirt from a city.

Have you tried the thicker soled Saltwaters? Like these and These?

i love the original Saltwaters but I can’t walk any real distance in them. The thicker soles ones are just as comfy and brilliant for both uneven/cobbly surfaces. I walked 15k+ a day in them on holiday recently and they were fantastic.

I have rose gold boardwalk salties and I have done city breaks in them. I've also got thin soled ones like you but wouldn't wear them all day.
The boardwalks would be fine in Rome. Got mine off Vinted.

You need sandals which are more supportive.

They have a textured sole, so more grippy. They're designed for more walking, basically.

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/07/2023 09:58

These are have reminded me; I did wear sandals the day we went to the Colosseum and Forum. Colosseum was fine, but we gave up on the forum after about 20 minutes as it was far too much effort to have to tread so carefully among uneven cobbles in 40 degree heat.

Thank you 😀

Axelotl · 22/07/2023 10:26

I wore trainers (Nike, lightweight cushioned ones) during the day, and walking sandals in the evening when I was walking less.

I would say the majority of people wore trainers in the day.
