Make up brand for DD just starting to show interest

My DD aged 12 has just recently started to show interest in make up - can anyone advise of what sort of brands this age group are interested in so I can show her and get her some bits to experiment with over the summer?

Benefit for kids 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Only on Mumsnet

I know, wtf? She needs to go to Boots or Superdrug and look at Barry M and Collection like the rest of us did. Honestly! At 12 and bit of lip gloss is all that's appropriate, 13/14+ is a whole different ball game.

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz "Has anyone actually said these girls should? Or is it that the OPs dd has an interest and the OP is looking for the best way to facilitate this?"

Children can have all sorts of interests. Parents don't have to facilitate them.

Your skin definitely does NOT become ruined by cheap make up. Cheaper make up is just the same as an own brand paracetamol compared to expensive Panadol. Advertising and packaging is what makes it expensive not the product.

CurlewKate · 22/07/2023 10:04

Incidentally-is there any evidence that "cheap" makeup is worse for the skin-regardless of age?

NancyJoan · 22/07/2023 10:05

Revolution and Elf both cheap and decent, Morphe costs slightly more but is great, and the assistants are really helpful.

Benefit is style over substance. Packaging that appeals to teens, but it’s overpriced for what it is.

I have a 14yr old (two actually but one isn’t that interested) and she loves lotions and potions and has for a while - she doesn’t look like a fake tanned drag queen (yet, lol) nor is she on a slippery slope to being over sexed as she’s not that fussed on any of the boys she knows, so the she’s too young comments are a bit ridiculous. What do you think will happen? My 13 year old nephew also loves skincare. They are all different and it’s ok to encourage their interests. I would think banning something so innocent would only make your relationship fraught. I’m rubbish at make up so couldn’t even tell you any brands she uses! She had a splurge at Boots with birthday money. Just go the shops with her and have some fun.

I was going to suggest Aldi tbh. They actually do decent make up. I wear concealer / tinted moisturiser from there. My kids watch make up tutorials on YouTube so find out if they are doing the same and check out the look to see what you need to buy.

I would not suggest she tells her daughter to look at you tube videos and buy products following their advices. Influencers are paid to use products and sell them, while an adult might just observe the look and buy similar a 12yo would just buy the advertised products. Additionally it is a slippery slope as loads of body issues in teens are caused by influencers.

Yes or they have links that give them commission. It's not a road to go down OP

Superdrug had amazing stuff from ELF and Revolution. Then Maybelline and Rimmel for something a "bit fancier".
I think as I've aged, my skin isn't as perfect so I need better stuff but she's young, so it'll be about the colours really as most things look fab on such young skin. I wouldn't let her get foundation though. I think she's too young to try something that gives her such a sense of "looking perfect". You can also get her an empty palette and then give her one eyeshadow at a time as a treat to add.

Dingdong90 · 22/07/2023 15:20

Revolution, they usually have good deals on their website and lots of sets and pallettes for experimenting with. I usually get all my dds makeup from there x

Before you start buying ..have a look at Esther Marie Woolley...beauty mindset. She has years of experience in the beauty industry. She can guide you...she does master classes on line.

But surely to stifle them they need a reason
What would be the reason here?

Because she's 12.

What age will you allow your dd to explore make up?

Shopper727 · 22/07/2023 17:09

Nyx, revolution, primark, elf, loads in boots or Superdrug you could get her a little basket of basics to start. My niece is 13 she has make up but is only allowed to wear it with family a little at a party but my sister is quite strict about what she wears etc. she’s also 5’9 so does look older than 13. Have fun experimenting with her (I have 4 boys so none of that for me)

timefornewme2023 · 24/07/2023 16:36

Thanks everyone sorry I didn't come back sooner I started a few threads at once and kind of lost track!

Thanks for all the ideas - sounds like Superdrug is a good place to head and I now have a list of favoured brands.

So far it's only lipgloss mascara and concealer but I am happy for her to experiment a bit in the holidays.

I take on board the comments about skincare though and have reinforced that make up means more effort need to be made on the cleansing front!
