Make up brand for DD just starting to show interest

My DD aged 12 has just recently started to show interest in make up - can anyone advise of what sort of brands this age group are interested in so I can show her and get her some bits to experiment with over the summer?

Boots 17 (own brand) is really good and cheap. It has nice bright colours if that's what you want and is largely unscented.
Wilko Essence range is very cheap and very good, but I'm not sure about how skin friendly it is.
A very good brand for being hypoallergenic is Clinique, but it is obviously very expensive and doesn't really have the colours and styles teenagers are attracted to.

youveturnedupwelldone · 21/07/2023 06:25

Revolution is good for starting out, boots 17 too, ELF is also good, also NYX. Superdrug and Boots have a huge range of decent inexpensive brands that so high quality products.

Each to their own but i I Lol at the suggestions of benefit and glossier for a 12 yr old starting out, good luck keeping up with that habit in the longer term! I'd encourage inexpensive brands so she can afford it when you're giving her pocket money/has a job when she's a bit older.

noglow · 21/07/2023 06:26

I'd take her to a superdrug and let her choose an eyeshadow pallette and a mascara. At that age they don't really need foundation. If their skin is acne prone that's a different story and yes they might want to cover it.

HotdogCat · 21/07/2023 06:27

I really like revolution and nyx for myself and I’m nearly 40 😂

DisforDarkChocolate · 21/07/2023 06:28

ELF is now in some Superdrugs and Boots. Reasonably priced. I buy the odd item but to me it's marketed towards younger people.

HerMammy · 21/07/2023 06:50

@HopelessEstateAgents
Agree 🤣 PP recommending £20
mascaras and £30/40 eyeshadows for 12 yr olds 🤣

happywotsit · 21/07/2023 06:57

Id take her to superdrug or boots and let her spend some money on things she likes.

I would also have a conversation about proper cleansing to take it all off.

Benefit. Not cheap, but a few bits may feel nice to have. Otherwise browse through Superdrug, which will have plenty of choice and price points. Does she know any brands her friends have talked about?

😂😂😂 ffs

cocksstrideintheevening · 21/07/2023 08:11

Dts are 12 - if it's their money they're spending Essence in Wilko, Primark, Superdrug.

If they have birthdays / Christmas they ask for benefit, clarinets, drunk elephant /
Whatever is trending on tik tok

My 11yo is way better at make up than me and buys hers from primark and various brands from Superdrug. She recently gave me a W7 foundation that she’d bought and was too dark for her and I actually quite like it and I’m usually an Estée Lauder fan!

Anna79ishere · 22/07/2023 04:14

I am shocked people would suggest cheap brands to a 12 yo. That’s how your skin becomes ruined in the long term and I see loads of adults with terrible skin due to using poor quality products. Cheap t shirts, pants etc ok, cheap products on your skin everyday is a terrible choice. I’d suggest to buy one set of good quality products, teach them to keep it well and the importance to invest in the right products. I am a professional woman in my mid 40 and I invest in good foundation, one mascara and two expensive sets with colours I know that suit me. My mum was a cleaner and she always taught me to to buy few but high quality things for my skin, I started with Clinique foundation and day cream at 16 have great skin, recently went for my first ever facial and they could not believe I was mid forty.

NotLovingWFH · 22/07/2023 07:41

In the 80s Rimmel was what our only shop sold so that’s what we wore. Let her loose in Superdrug there are lots of different brands in there and she will find something she likes at a reasonable price. Kids don’t need Mac or other expensive brands it’s about experimenting and having fun with makeup.

The most important thing to learn is how to remove it all properly.

Cheap but reputable brands are fine and often the same or very similar to higher end. They might not be the latest formula but they will be similar to the formula from the higher end say 3 years ago. At that age its about experimenting with style not skin care.

Is it just me that finds that the implication of this thread is that 12 year old girls should routinely wear makeup deeply depressing?

SoberCurious2 · 22/07/2023 08:51

@CurlewKate

No, you made that point on page one and someone agreed with you.

For me, the op saying "dd has shown an interest in make up" is different to "right, she's turned 12, time for some slap". Not all girls will want to wear make up that young but some do. Nothing wrong with either.

I agree. I think at thar age it's best to help them explore their interests in a safe way and show them appropriate products for a subtle look or colours if they feel arty.

egowise · 22/07/2023 08:59

Revolution, elf, Primark.

All really good stuff, especially of just starting out!

Lots of cheaper brands have really upped their game since the make up boom!

Has anyone actually said these girls should? Or is it that the OPs dd has an interest and the OP is looking for the best way to facilitate this interest?

Crimblecrumble1990 · 22/07/2023 09:12

It would have been my dream to stand in the boots make up aisle and look at all the choice / colours etc. if you go to a big boots, there are a lot of brands. Remember that make up is meant to be fun - I don't necessarily mean neon colours but it can be a form of expression.

I wouldn't worry to much about 'cheap' or 'expensive' as they are probably made in the same factories with the same scientists anyway. I would focus more on her knowing how to apply it / take it off.

I think your good skin will be more a result of good genes and sunscreen use than not using cheap makeup brands 😁.

Booklover75 · 22/07/2023 09:58

Curlewkate I completely agree with you. It's getting younger and younger. A lot of peer pressure from tik tok and social media and the like. I helped out at my sons year six leavers ball this week. I was amazed by the amount of make up all the girls had plastered on.
