Colouring my hair, help please!

I’ve generally always used box dye on my hair, one of the ones from Holland and Barrett as salon dye irritates my scalp a lot.

Recently had highlights put through, but felt like I’d spent a lot of money for something that was okish but nothing special.

I have a lot of grey root, which is probably an inch long now. Don’t really like all the different colours when highlights, although it is a good alternative for grey growth.

The last time I used a box dye the roots were a little auburn. How can I avoid this in future please?

OP you could try and go for a cool or a neutral undertone in the dye, as any warm colours (which have red undertones) will show up quite strong on grey hair which is probably why you ended up with auburn.

It depends on what colour you are trying to achieve, and what you are starting with? Is it just the warmth you want to neutralise, or go lighter?

What's annoying is that looking at the result on the box is not much of an indicator as to how it's going to turn out. Also it depends on the brand how they label this.

You might need to do some research before you buy. Here's a guide for Garnier hair colour, I couldn't find one online for H&B, but the guidelines tend to be similar.
