Please help me find a 'wow' dress :)

I'm catching up with friends next week and am looking for a new dress as I've lose some weight since they last saw me so want to look my best 😁

It's smart casual dress code, although I would rather be too smart than too formal!

I've dropped down to to a 12, I have a small waist but my hips/but are a large 12, as are my upper arms... bingo wings. So nothing sleeveless please, I need at least short sleeves!

I tend to prefer block colours rather than prints but I'm open to all suggestions really! Thank you!

I took one look at the home page of Girl in Mind, thought, "wouldn't wear any of that, ever." Thought that might be unfair, clicked on "dresses" and thought, "I'd never wear any of that ever."

Sister Jane is full of fabulous dresses. I love this one.

Sister Jane Organza Dress

I had a look at all those dresses and they are the most unflattering things I have ever seen. They do absolutely nothing for the wearer. In one of the photos the dress makes her head appear to be on backwards. I mean, they're supposed to flatter your shape.

I'm not bothered about "flattering my shape" . Never have been ; even when I was a size 6 I preferred dramatic hippy/ Laura Ashley/ Droopy and Brown/ Monsoon type dresses or bonkers European brands.

The Girl in Mind dresses do nothing for me at all. I could tell from the home page there wouldn't be anything I'd want to wear. We're all different but they're not "wow dresses" for me. Sister Jane is a new brand for me and I don't own any but it's full of "wow dresses".

CurlyhairedAssassin · 18/07/2023 22:07

Maybe "flatter your shape" was the wrong phrase. Just generally "flatter you" was what I should have written. I like hippy style stuff. But I wouldn't want to look like I was either in a pantomime or was going to some kind of perverted fetish club for people who like to dress like little girls.

My mind's just blown at 'viscose linen'. I can't imagine this fabric!

Scrolled and scrolled through the sister Jane ones and saw zero I would wear. I'd fill the wardrobe with the girl in mind stuff.

I think they are a bit of an acquired taste!

Have you had a look at Dancing Leopard?

They have some beautiful dresses - simple and elegant!

There are some lovely things on this site .

A viscose-linen blend ?

NatashaDancing · 19/07/2023 00:09

I've got a cross back apron in a viscose linen blend. It's not as nice as pure linen- it doesn't have the substance, for want of a better word, of linen. It's also not as nice as 100% viscose would be as it's not as soft as viscose.

EconomyClassRockstar · 19/07/2023 00:21

Seeing as the OP has specifically said she wants to show off her weight loss, I have no idea why so many people are suggesting she wears what is essentially a tent!

Middlelanehogger · 19/07/2023 00:25

Sister Jane is a fabulous recommendation for OP.

Her old friends will think "holy shit - OP must be fucking loaded if she can afford to blow her cash on something with so little aesthetic or practical value", be filled with financial envy, and ignore OP's bingo wings entirely. Great suggestion!

Please help me find a 'wow' dress :)
Beeonmyeyelash · 19/07/2023 01:14

@Middlelanehogger OP doesn't want them to think fuck she's loaded. She wants them to think wow she's lost weight. It's right there in her first post

@EconomyClassRockstar IKR?! Bizarre. Like people didn't even read OP's post

@NatashaDancing why you sneering at everyone who doesn't like the dresses you do? OP says she wants something that shows her shape and her weight loss. Says it twice, in first post and later on

Hope you found something OP! This thread has been weird 😅

SurpriseSparDay · 19/07/2023 06:19

@Beeonmyeyelash You may need to read @Middlelanehogger‘s post a few more times, to discern the cunningly disguised sarcasm …

(Hilariously, both the sarcasm and the outright abuse serve to emphasise that we really are speaking two different languages on this thread …)

With respect, this thread isn’t about what you would wear or like. The OP has said what they are looking for, so this thread should be about that.

Chloemy87 · 19/07/2023 07:14

If you want a wow dress try lavish Alice.

I’m really not sure MN is the place to come for a strictly limited conversation. Isn’t the beauty of an online forum the unlimited diversity of taste, comprehension, experience, budgetary constraints and modes of expression that any group of individual posters bring to a thread? It’s a perfect way of discovering - through the varied opinions stated - that other people don’t think as you do - or approach the act of getting dressed as you do. That has to be enlightening, surely?

(Cannot tell you how many linen/viscose dresses I’ve stumbled over on the Internet since yesterday! Grin)

Mariposa123 · 19/07/2023 08:14

@SurpriseSparDay I’m not saying it isn’t, but I just find it strange to come on a thread where someone is asking for something specific, and post the opposite of what they’ve asked. And then when people say this, to continue to defend it because that’s what they like. Start your own thread if you want to do that - it doesn’t help the op!

I realise this post doesn’t help the OP either, so I’ll bow out 🙂

I'm surprised at the surprise over the existence of a linen viscose blend. It's hardly a novel concept. Brands like Zara, Other Stories and Nobody's Child use it a lot.

SurpriseSparDay · 19/07/2023 08:24

I’m not surprised, @NatashaDancing - I agree, it’s perfectly run of the mill.
