What do you look best in?

Just a bit of fun really. Might help me reflect a little further on what works best for me, what I like most and where the two intersect. But the question is mostly for fun and clothes chitchat.

For me: reds, blues, light grey. Form-fitting stuff. Checked shirts (randomly). Funnel necks & v-necks.

Assymetric tops, peplums, cowl necks and cap sleeves are unflattering.

Irritatingly, what suits me best is not what I like best.

Flattering: the pencil skirt and fitted top look. Heels. Pastels, red, blue.
Unflattering: shapeless items, dresses unless pulled in tight with no waistband - have a v long body- , flat shoes or low heels, beige/cream/yellow/orange, polo neck or scoop neck tops. Blouses/shirts. Stuff that makes my arse huge and flat, eg linen trousers, denim skirts.

Somewhat bizarrely, as I'm not at all sporty, sportswear. I suspect because I'm an inverted triangle anything that isn't very fitted hangs from shoulders and boobs, and makes me look bigger all over; whereas in leggings and a sports bra you can see I do actually have a shape - and it's not square!

Wide leg jeans and trousers look good on me as I have narrow hips and slim legs. Draped necklines look great on me, as do, as I recently discovered, halter necks. The latter one is frustrating as they're very hard to wear without a bra and I can't go without.

Colour-wise, I look best in all shades of blue, most shades of green (but not muddy, khaki greens), and coral. Cream too, if I have a tan.

Dramatic, floor-length coats.
Deep v necklines, camp collars, ruffle front shirts.
Wide leg trousers, men's suiting and shoes.

I'm basically a pantomime villain with an office job.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 16/07/2023 04:46

That is literally the best description I've ever heard anyone make of themselves @Poxie! 😆

Bonitalazenia · 16/07/2023 06:01

Long flowy shirt-dresses. I just bought this one and it’s so flattering. That’s not me in the picture.. I’m an optimistic size 18. If I was a shape I’d be a nomnomnomagon.

What do you look best in?
Bobsledgirl · 16/07/2023 06:06

I’m tall with narrow hips. Not much of a waist. I don’t know if what I wear suits me but I think I suit wide leg trousers, slightly cropped trousers, long dresses. I particularly like shirt dresses.

sunrisechurch · 16/07/2023 07:22

I look best in the 50s silhouette, small waist with a full skirt. I do wear this style sometimes but it’s a hard one to get right and not look like you’re in costume 😆

Maxi skirts and mini skirts are the best lengths for me, I’m not sure why but the proportions of midi skirts really don’t work on me. Knee length is ok if a pencil skirt but they feel a bit dated right now.

I usually look dowdy in jeans, I see others look so cool and I don’t know how to emulate it!

iamnottoofatiamjusttooshort · 16/07/2023 07:29

I think I look ok in casual jeans / baggy hoody / tee shirt

I wear a nurses uniform to work so that just bleurgh

As soon as I need to get dressed up - event or whatever that needs something smart with decent shoe/ heel / hair / make up .. I look awful .. fat frumpy look like I've tried too hard , everything hurts and I can't wait to go home

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 16/07/2023 07:46

1960’s style fitted dresses like Audrey Hepburn in Carosel with Cary Grant.

SurpriseSparDay · 16/07/2023 07:46

What I like: huge puffy dresses in eye searing colours . Like this.

What I look good in: minimal, body skimming, floor length knitted dresses in ivory.

It’s so unfair. I’ve built up a small collection of the latter - high necked and long, narrow sleeved wool / cashmere for Winter, sleeveless silk / cotton mixes for Summer - because they’re so flattering and easy to wear. I’ve built up nothing but memories and regrets of the former style because I look idiotic in them and always end up giving them away …

ladygindiva · 16/07/2023 07:54

Shapewise; slim fit mid calf length dresses or jumpsuits with a fitted ( not elasticated!!!!) high waist , high or boat necklines and puffy or detailed sleeves; I'm a short pear with a semi decent waistline, tiny shoulders and short legs. Decent calves and ankles and awful knees. Anything that cuts me in half at the waist eg belts, elasticated waists look awful. Colour wise I used to suit autumnal or dramatic shades (burgundy, rust, dark green, orange etc) as I have hazel eyes and darkish colouring but since my black hair went grey and I'm now sporting an ash blonde look I'm now suiting dusky pink, pale blue grey tones and olive green. And I can wear black now well, whereas before I looked awful in it as the combo of black hair and sallowish skin gave me a washed out witchy appearance.

Spanielsarepainless · 16/07/2023 07:55

Tapered trousers and a polo shirt. Blues, greys, cool colours generally.

TheOGCCL · 16/07/2023 11:54

Best: Jeans. They like me and I like them. I love their practicality, versatility and simplicity, the opposite of try too hard and very flattering. I can’t wear them in winter as it’s too cold so then I switch to jeans styles in cord.

Worst: There’s a lot to choose from but certainly dresses of any sort. They feel overdone or fussy or ageing (on me) and seem to give me a paunch I don’t even have. I also hate tights and it’s only warm enough for me to go bare legged at 25 degrees and over.

Hawkins0001 · 16/07/2023 11:55

Special forces type gear

NatTheGnat · 16/07/2023 11:57

Fitted tshirts tucked into a line skirts. I'm very booby and hippy.

NatTheGnat · 16/07/2023 11:57

Colours I suit are light spring type colours

Zipps · 16/07/2023 12:18

Colours - anything grey, grey blues and navy, grey- greens, denim, taupe, ecru, plum, metallics.
I don't do brights, white or black on my top half.

Classic, rock chick, military, edgy, metal, leather and faux leather, animal print, velvet.
I like a bit of fuss- nice buttons, cuffs,
puff/frilly sleeves, studs etc.

I don't suit anything too girly, oversized, boho, preppy, blazers, hate most patterns especially flowers or anything manly like brogues.

TheChosenTwo · 16/07/2023 12:20

Not the clothes that I like to wear 😂 so I just wear what I like and is comfortable- I tend to live in sweatshirts and leggings in this inbetweeny weather, it’s lazy and perfect for me!!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/07/2023 12:30

Bright colours,tight clothes.Gold jewellery

WillowtreeHouse · 16/07/2023 12:45

Blue ankle skimming jeans, tee shirt, sandals or trainers, gold jewellery. I suit bright colours, especially greens and blues, though I prefer muted colours. So I basically prefer what doesn't suit me as much. 😂

When I really dress up I look like my head is attached to someone else, sadly.
