How to look more ‘current’

I’m 35 and feel completely stuck - I don’t feel ready to dress like the classic expensive threads but feel too old to be in crop tops.

With covid / wfh and pregnancy and now a small baby I feel like I haven’t had to dress in real clothes for years and have no idea how to.

I feel very dated in floral dresses and vejas / denim jacket, even down to my sunglasses.

I’d love some tips on how to feel and look more trendy - and I know saying the word trendy most likely means I will be it!

I’m wearing either midi/maxi denim skirts or long wide leg trousers at the moment. I wear with a French tucked T-shirt or thin knit/tank top & white trainers. When it’s really warm I’ve been wearing H&M printed midi skirts & tied up linen shirts. I fell for the ubiquitous Uniqlo bum bag which I have in black, khaki & turquoise.

Do you follow influencers your age for good ideas? I wear athleisure constantly (on mat leave) or a maxi dress

Sensibletrousers · 10/07/2023 21:48

Oversize trackie b’s and a slogan tshirt or vest, denim jacket if necessary.

Short shorts and an oversized hoodie / sweater / tshirt

Harem pants (jersey), vest / tshirt

The devil is in the details. Fold up the sleeves of the denim jacket. Tuck in one part of the tshirt off centre. Have neon finger and toe nails. Wear one bright thing (bag / headscarf / sliders).

I’m 44 and currently wearing similar to what I did in the 90s, and loving it! (No crop tops though, that’s a stretch too far lol)

No advice, just came to say I could have written your post!! I've just discovered Nobody's Child, which I'm quite enjoying.

Trying to get away from skinny jeans / leggings / blazer!

I'm wary of wide legged trousers having fallen down the stairs somehow when they got twisted! Midi floral dresses look fashionable. Green seems to feature lots.

Theres a good Instagram page for this: Two Scoops of Style. They talk about how to change an outfit to make it less millennial.

Ooh @CSPS2019 that look sounds something I could get on board with. Can you elaborate?

I feel like skirt length is key right now. I wore a knee length skirt the other day and felt like I’d time travelled from 2017. It’s all maxi or mini these days. Or jumpsuits.

You don’t sound that out of fashion thought to be honest OP. Lots of women I know still seem to be wearing flowery dresses and vejas.

Or midi. That awkward length works right now. The op is right. Flowery dresses and Veja us too dowdy for a 30 something. It's now the preserve of the unfashionable or the over 65s

yipeeyiyay · 10/07/2023 22:24

@ThatFraggle Iget the iron on hemming. You fold the fabric, then iron and voila, shorter trousers. I sew a couple of stitches to prevent a wardrobe malfunction, but that's a 'no-sew' way of doing it.
Only works on mid to heavy weight fabric. If the fabric is fllowy or lightweight, the iron on stuff makes it stiff and sit weirdly

@Skoo2008 I'm on the mobile site. Top of the forum board just above all the threads, little arrow on right hand side, choose "start thread" and one will be started in whichever forum you're currently viewing.

I want to come round your house and steal all your clothes. Your style sounds awesome.

I'm 68 and wearing what I did in the 70s, 80s & 90s 😂 In bigger sizes, natch. I'm REALLY enjoying the current mishmash of styles! Long may it continue. Fashion hasn't been this much fun for ages!

GarlicGrace · 11/07/2023 03:41

@Sensibletrousers, I've had to give the short shorts a pass, though. I did venture to The Outdoors in a pair of Adidas running shorts with opaque tights underneath, but still felt a tad "Too Old For That". Bah.

Sounds like you're on a roll!

As someone in their sixties, wear the crop tops if you want. I wish I'd appreciated my body more whilst it was still in good nick.

Chickenfeed67 · 11/07/2023 09:22

@CSPS2019 thanks!
