Why do you love S&B?

I love having lovely clothes, footwear, bags, jewelry, accessories. Also looking after my skin, hair, nails, figure and wearing makeup etc.
It boosts my confidence, if I put some effort in I know I will feel great rather than frumpy.
I'm interested in fashion and trends even if I don't always buy/follow/be inspired by all of it. I love developing my style and finding an item that you know you're going to wear to death.

It's my favourite board on MN - people are generally kind and supportive and I've got some great tips and advice over the years. I'm neither very stylish or beautiful but it gives me a chance of trying to be!

I love when someone asks for a summer dress to do the school run in, someone says Next and someone else posts a £500 frilly pink confection with huge sleeves and massive tiers which could contain a whole kindergarten class and can only be worn by Jodie Comer in Killing Eve! It just shows how different lives are.

I have found some wonderful brands of clothes and shoes I didn't know about e.g Lanx, Joseph Cheaney, Klements, Palava all discovered on here. I love the completely bonkers ones e.g Cecilie Bahnsen, Egg, Renli Sui, even if I never buy anything from them I'm glad they exist. I love clothes and nice shoes and boots. I might not be Jodie Comer in her Molly Goddard Killing Eve dress but I'm not Next either.

I've got a large collection of Victorian and Edwardian jewellery and a couple of Georgian pieces and have no interest in new jewellery or trends. I've got very little interest in bags - happy with Radley, Lulu Guinness and Longchamp bags I've had for years. I enjoy the trainers/ jeans/ bags threads and seeing other people's passions but safely knowing I won't be tempted.

I'm not interested in the beauty side. Hair used to be a very well cut bob, cut every 5 weeks but grew it in lockdown and it's now shoulder length and often worn up. Roots done professionally every 5 weeks. I wear mascara, foundation and occasionally lipstick and use the same Clinique products I've used for years. I've never had a manicure, never wear nail varnish.

its my favourite board too- doesn't get snarky and I love looking at all the links people post

FiveShelties · 11/07/2023 10:53

I love it for the advice, freely given and usually in a kind and positive way. I have learnt lots about products and not sure if this is a positive, but I have learnt lots and lots about Beauty Boxes - and purchased many.😂

@Zipps do you mean S&B in real life or as a MN board???

My love for one of those is more … complicated than for the other.

Yes 😂

For me it’s all about my mental health and well-being. I have a sneaky feeling that good S&B hygiene influences ny mental health more than vice versa - if I look good, I feel good. I very rarely can look terrible and feel good.
I was always obsessed with the “ugly duckling” storylines in tv/films/books as a teenager and that hasn’t stopped. I know that I am absolutely an ugly duckling behind all the smoke and mirrors but who with a shit ton of effort can look faintly like a swan 😂

Both

I’m obsessive about clothes, and I like problem solving and feeling useful on a subject I’m confident about. Absolutely love dressing my family and friends, when they allow me to. So I always arrive at a thread full of joyful anticipation and curiosity.

All too often I’m forced to withdraw - bruised and battered. (I’ve used the phrase ‘torn to shreds’ far too often …) The board is called S&B - but a large proportion of those who frequent it only want to acknowledge the existence of brands they’re already familiar with.

And most people interpret budgeting as meaning every item must be strictly mid range. I tend to take a different approach; it isn’t popular here.

There have been some epic threads though - where I’ve been enlightened by other posters’ knowledge and enthusiasm. And it’s lovely when you spend time searching for something excellent for an anonymous stranger - and they like one of your suggestions and bother to say thank you.

getafringenotbotox · 11/07/2023 20:26

Because people are genuinely helpful and love it when they solve your issue.

There is no judgement, it's all nice.

tobee · 14/07/2023 16:43

I don't. It makes me spend too much money.

QueefofSheena · 14/07/2023 18:42

I enjoy the beauty part most, particularly the GWP and box threads. The advent calendar threads are my favourite but make me buy far too much.

Oceanus · 14/07/2023 21:11

I love reading about makeup and skincare, also enjoy reading about beauty treatments. I love finding out what other people recommend and why. I find these posts a lot more honest than online reviews. I also like to know what people have tried that didn't work for them and why.
Whenever somebody asks about clothes I always hear about some new brand and even if I'm not looking to buy anything I enjoy browsing. My body shape changed a lot recently and I lack confidence tbh. I knew what to wear before to make me feel good but now I feel like I'm lost in a little boat with no direction. These posts, even though they're not for me, always give me a little confidence boost.

Oceanus · 14/07/2023 21:20

Also, it's important to add, I'm face blind, so clothes are probably more important for my brain than for others. Not clothes per se, but style, shape, colour, basically what makes people unique. Faces usually mean nothing to me but I'll notice the nice skin, the pretty eyebrows, the nice lipstick...! Faces usually all look the same, so I tend to focus and remember on how a dress looks like it was made for a particular person or how the accessories match so well.

Vitriolinsanity · 15/07/2023 20:43

I love the brutality. In a good way.

OP: what do you think of these sandals?
Poster: my nana swears by them

But also when everyone clubs together and finds the ultimate mother of the groom outfit for a lady that spends more time walking her labradors than considering what the fuck she looks like.

morelippy · 15/07/2023 21:12

It's my favourite. I've found all sorts of new things to try and almost all have been excellent.

I've also bought a couple of dresses linked on here that I wouldn't have found otherwise.

Im just sorry I can't offer much in return.

NatTheGnat · 15/07/2023 21:14

I love clothes, make up and skin care. Really can't be arsed with hair and nails or fake tan.

I sometimes enjoy the threads on here and find just the volume of people using the board useful if you want a quick second opinion or are looking for something specific or just fancy a natter about clothes and what other people like to wear or shop for.
