I haven't bought a bag in years so would love some suggestions!

Bum bags worn across the body are "in" where I am plus "that" Uniqlo bag (I confess, I have one!)

I misread that as “made from rescued fire horses” 😮

me too hahahahahahaha

On bag threads I always recommend Mimi Berry. I have several and they are absolutely beautiful. She has a sale on an the moment and there are some absolute stunners that I'm having to sit on my hands to resist.

Yes, they are fabulous. Wish she did more work-sized bags (I need a zip closure).

The Homer totes are currently about £80 in the sale - they don't have zips but for that price you could perhaps get a local dressmaker/cobbler to put one in? I did this with a tote recently (although not a MB one) and it only cost about £20.

Cheztwix · 30/06/2023 19:45

I have some lovely leather crossbody bags but I’m enjoying my nylon ones most at the moment. They’re so light and great for holidays! I have a cheap Uniqlo and a nice Ganni one I’m rotating.

Cheztwix · 30/06/2023 19:50

I’m imagining myself spinning around with a handbag now.

@letshaveanicecuppatea those Vendula bags are so cheerful. I have 3 in my basket but I’m giving myself half a day to ‘cool off’. Do you know other vegan brands like this (ie at less than Stella McCartney prices)?

Maybe try Matt and Nat?

honeyfox · 30/06/2023 23:06

Although just looking at Vendula now, the Matt and Nat bags are a lot more simple and minimalist.

Bitchesbelike · 29/06/2023 22:00

That’s terrible. Those poor fire hoses thinking they were getting rescued and then bam. The rescuers turn them into bags!!!

@Bitchesbelike Grin Grin Grin

@ChocolateHelps - i want one of those now too. Gorgeous bag and my cross body bag has just fallen apart after a few years of daily use...

TinyPurpleFishes · 01/07/2023 01:02

The Uniqlo bag! (I have three different colours…)

I would love one of these...made from rescued fire hoses

I think I am in love

LadyWithLapdog · 01/07/2023 09:00

@honeyfox thanks, Matt & Natt are more sedate and more my style usually. I like Venduña as they’re so cheerful. I haven’t bought any yet, though, as I don’t need any and trying to cut down on non-essentials. I saw some in the Fenella Smith sale at excellent prices.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to follow fashion; it doesn’t make someone a bad person for wanting something up-to-date and vaguely stylish.

I get that that's an unhelpful comment but I've never thought of bags being in or out of fashion with the exception of a few odd styles which are hyper marketed.

Bags for me just fall into the categories of (a ) do I like the look of them (b) will they be useful or appropriate for what I have in mind and (c) how much do I want to pay?

That bum bag worn as a cross body bag is, so I'm told, the height of fashion. To me it looks ridiculous.

On the links posted - some, in fact most, pass tests (a) and (b) a few fail (c ) but whether they're in fashion or not, they're just bags- none of them to me look anything particularly different from last year or the last 10 years or longer. I've got bags from Aspinal, Longchamp, Lulu Guinness and Radley and a beautiful rigid frame 1960s croc leather handbag.

@Italianna - my laptop and I nipped into Osprey at lunchtime, in the interests of research. I have got a small laptop (13 inch) and it does fit in the Malden, but it's a bit of a squeeze. The opening is slightly narrower than the rest of the bag, so you have to put the laptop in vertically, then rotate it to sit horizontally. I think I am going to get a Rita Hobo instead. My laptop fits in comfortably.

That's a very nice bag. It's also confounding my confusion about bags being in or out of fashion. Hasn't that style been around forever?

blahblahblah1654 · 01/07/2023 10:53

Thanks everyone for the recommendations! I actually bought a Uniqlo cross body bag the other day. I'm yet to use it as my cat has decided it's a comfy bed! Looking for a slightly fancier one too

Oh thank you. I didn't know Fable did bags. Their jewellery is so pretty and looks much more expensive than it is.

Might have just put this bag in the online basket (really don't need any more handbags...but look at it!!)

I am so tempted with the lilac one, it's beautiful 😍

I have this bag but in green, bought it years ago and still going strong. It’s great quality and lots of room in it. I get so many compliments on it too.

LimeCheesecake · 01/07/2023 22:17

I do hate the “just get what you like” which doesn’t answer the question about what’s in fashion, there’s clearly fashions in bags. But as most woman don’t change bags so frequently /need to carry particular types of bags for their lives regardless of what’s in fashion, it does tend to move slower.

Cool people seem to be carrying 90s bags, of the shoulder type baguette bag, worn in armpit bags, so presume that is the next popular bag style. Probably less baguette like and more just shoulder bag. (Something that wouldn’t look right carried on the crook of the arm or just in your hand)

ArtistAndMusician · 01/07/2023 22:17

I ended up with a Longchamp Roseau for £60 on eBay (RRP £450). It had been used once. The key though is figuring out what style you like and going from there, following brands that exhibit that quality. My bag had been used once and was listed as 'Longchamp Handbag' rather than the exact style, which helped.
