Hi here's the background- I'm mid-fifties with mid to dark brown hair which I've only ever had altered by dodgy highlights done by a friend a long time ago. They were very bad- stripey and I couldn't wear certain colours whilst they grew out. Went through this nightmare twice amazingly. Now I think I need some lighter shades in my hair ( having seen how drab it looks in pictures recently).

So I had a consultation yesterday but of course I don't know what to ask for. I think I have a cool complexion. My hair is fairly long, as in just below shoulders, very thick and a moderate amount of grey in there.

I mentioned babylights yesterday but the consultant said they wouldn't be noticeable (?). I think I'm not terribly well suited to blonde but don't know what colours would look good. Are there warm brown- blonde shades? I've seen pictures of the shade "caramel " but how can I tell if it would suit me? How do people decide?

Thanks for any information, tips etc, anything at all.

If you're cool toned, you need cool hair colours. I'm not sure caramel is going to work, it's a warm shade. That's what I have and I'm olive skinned. I'd suggest ash blonde for you. It's far easier to blend with grey so you're lucky in that respect!

Thanks Seddon. That's what I would have thought too. I have to say though, I'm really confused now because I've done a bit of research online now and I've seen sometimes it said that you should choose hair colour the same warmth/ coolness as you complexion and on other sites they say choose hair tones the opposite to your complexion.

This is one that suugests you choose a hair colour with undertones opposite to your skin's undertones-

Completely unsure now. Maybe I shouldn't have started to google it.
