Let me proclaim my stinky armpits cure!!!

Honestly the amount of clothes I’ve ruined over the years, I could weep (yes, silk tuxedo jacket, I’m thinking of you…)

I have NEVER been able to keep my pits pong-free. I have been a proper soap user for years, I have tried so many anti perspirants, deodorants, you name it. I’ve tried natural and hardcore brands. I’ve used Dettol in the washing machine, special freshening fabric sprays, scrubbed clothes with bicarb… STILL, every summer, most of my clothes have ended up with a horrible musty pong that never quite goes away.

well, drum roll please, because today is two days in a row that I have been out and about ALL day in muggy, sweaty London… and I have, on both days, taken off my dress at the end of the day… to ZERO smell. I mean ZERO. My DH just gave my armpits s quick sniff (for research purposes) and confirmed: ZERO smell.

So this is my v simple solution (and maybe everyone else on the planet knew this before, but nobody ever told me!!)

1 DETTOL soap in the shower
2 SCRUB pits with scrubby gloves
3 Mitchum creamy-stick triple defence antiperspirant deodorant, I’ve used Powder Fresh scent

ta-da!!!

I think it needs all three steps. But I do think the scrubby gloves part is the game changer. It’s been getting better and better since I discovered this particular antiperspirant, but the exfoliation stage has taken it from almost no smell to NO SMELL.

Did everyone know this except me?!?

it’s why I’ve posted: to share my new found wisdom. I hope it helps someone else!

Hmm I've always had sweaty pits and struggled to find something that works. Stopped using Mitchum due to the aluminium thing. Been using a crystal salt deodorant but it doesn't banish the wetness and recently my pits have become smelly very quickly.

I think I'll try the flannel thing. My pits always feel a little tacky even after showering so perhaps that's where I'm going wrong?

acheyfeet · 22/06/2023 21:01

Hibiscrub wash is life changing. Glycolic acid definitely works. Mitchum eventually just leaves a weird layer on your skin.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 22/06/2023 21:01

I have found sage tea (drunk not rubbed on pits) works well to stop the smell. Tastes foul but ok for a couple of days, the effect lasts for ages… months.

Acqua · 22/06/2023 21:22

Exfoliating seems to be the gamechanger for me. I can be a bit on the sensitive side so can't use scrubby mits, a small cotton face flannel works as a gentler exfoliation.

DustyLee123 · 22/06/2023 21:35

What glycolic acid should I try ? I’ve got a PIXI toner ?
And how do I use it ?

MissingMoominMamma · 22/06/2023 12:32

If I use an antiperspirant, my sweat smells horrible.

I generally keep clean and use PitRock deodorant. I sweat loads- on hot days I’m soaked, but I don’t appear to smell… unless I’ve used a normal deodorant/antiperspirant.

Same! I'm not an overly sweaty person and usually use Wild which works great on me. I bought some Dove antiperspirant spray and used it on a hot day when I was out and about and I absolutely REEKED by the end of the day! Really horrible smell! The worst I get with Wild or other natural deodorant is smelling slightly sweaty.

MrsCarson · 22/06/2023 21:57

I use a deodorant bar soap, then rub on Sanex dermo stick and then spray some Mitchum.
Soaps are Zest, Dettol (not keen on the feel) Irish spring or at the moment I have Coast. I usually get the soap on Amazon. Dh prefers Irish spring, I like Zest.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 22/06/2023 21:59

I have the same routine OP (same products) after reading a similar thread on here recently.
Perimenopause is causing havoc with my body.
I have noticed a great improvement over the past few weeks.

Botox works for excessive sweating. Only problem is that it can divert it, so that instead of armpits it comes out around the waist.

I found this with driclor. Lovely dry pits. Super sweaty soggy back instead.

ArrabellaAM · 22/06/2023 22:15

Fussy deodorant & wash with a charcoal bar soap every morning works for me! Double wash occasionally if it's been hot!

mathanxiety · 22/06/2023 22:19

LordSalem · 21/06/2023 23:52

I don't suffer with smell, just excessive sweating. Tried Mitchum and it ruined the armpits inside and out of so many T-shirts that I've been unable to save with any method so far. Didn’t stop the sweating either. Driclor gave me chemical burns even after following instructions to the letter. Odaban works for a day when used every now and then. Glad you've been able to get rid of the smell OP but I'd love to see a solution for ridiculous odourless sweating. All over body!

Botox in the armpit might work.

woodhill · 22/06/2023 22:28

It's horrid

Some clothes make it worse even though they are cotton

I think I have driclor the Dr gave me which I use occasionally

Pits are sweaty but not stinky

I wash with soap as well as shower gel then Mitchum stick

EarthSight · 22/06/2023 22:33

Omg OP - that sounds extreme.

@DustyLee123 It's a brave thing to try, but if you get the change, try not wearing any antiperspirant at all for about 4 -5 days and just make-do with lots of washing. That will be about enough time for any residue from sticky antiperspirants to come off. Then, try using an alum stone and get back to me. It's not going to stop sweating really but it will stop smell.

Upwardtrajectory · 22/06/2023 22:42

Mix Epsom salts with water into a spray bottle and shake to mix until you feel like your arms are going to fall off. A couple of sprays after my shower each morning - anywhere on the body, didn’t have to be pits - and the smell stopped for me.
After a couple of months it stopped working, but I just gave it a break for a few weeks and then started again.

BonBon10 · 22/06/2023 22:43

Detol or imperial leather soap bar and a flannel, stopped using shower gels years ago. Followed by a nice body lotion.

MustYou · 22/06/2023 22:44

TheMurderousGoose · 22/06/2023 11:40

I thought you were going to say glycolic acid.

Yes, this. I suppose it’s a form of exfoliation too.

FatNoMoreSue · 22/06/2023 22:48

Somanycats · 22/06/2023 08:56

Or menopause. No smell or underarm hair since then for me.

Same here. Ditto my feet - I used to have terribly smelly feet but now I can wear trainers all day, take my socks off in the evening and all my socks smell of is fabric conditioner. It’s amazing!

itme · 22/06/2023 22:50

I use Pit Rok crystal deodorant. You just rub it in damp armpits and it magically keeps the smell away. I think it works by killing the bacteria that makes sweat smell. It’s magical stuff. When it’s really hot and I’m having to wear clothes that could get west marks on them I use Pit Rok followed by a roll on antiperspirant deodorants again, it works really well and the roll on deodorant doesn’t get that stale deodorant smell after a few hours.

PickAChew · 22/06/2023 23:00

CMOTDibbler · 22/06/2023 07:40

Mitchum Gel is better than the stick and no white marks either. Occasionally I am tempted to try some other deodorant and it is never as good. Real soap is crucial too (not Dove or cleansing bars, real cold process soap)

I tried gel last year when I couldn't get the unscented stick for love nor money. My armpits were sore for months after just a few uses.

I never had smelly armpits until menopause, when my left armpit started to stink. I do the double wash plus mitchum stick but I find that what makes the biggest difference is not shaving if it's not going to show. I do shave if I'm wearing tiny sleeves and leaving the house but shaving does make me sweat and pong AND itch more.

Or menopause. No smell or underarm hair since then for me.

Same 🙂 > Well past the menopause now and can't remember the last time I sweated unless the weather's unusually hot. I never had a lot of body hair, but now have next to none. Don't know why this is (and may not necessarily be a good thing - I'm no scientist) but I'm not complaining. I still use deodorant (the Mitchum one), just in case my nose has also lost its sense of smell due to the menopause, but I'm convinced if I was hunting prey no-one would sense me coming.

Azandme · 22/06/2023 23:31

Hydrogen peroxide applied after washing, then rinsed off does the trick. It fizzes as it kills the bacteria that cause smells.

Contact lens peroxide works brilliantly 😁

ThunderSocks · 22/06/2023 23:41

A lot of it's definitely down to hormones.

I find a couple of drops of neat lavender oil added to the soap while washing works wonders at combating smells. That, and as previous posters have said, fragrance free deodorant (mitchum roll on us my go to).

Underminer · 22/06/2023 23:45

Some great tips on here. I do exfoliate my armpits with St Ives Apricot scrub.

i sweat excessively on my forehead though, how can I stop that? It is really embarrassing.

Kentkittypie · 22/06/2023 23:56

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 22/06/2023 20:08

I get sweaty and nothing has worked really so am going to try this.

Any ideas why I always smell like curry when I'm particularly sweaty? I rarely eat it, it's bizarre

Me too - my bo smells like curry too and i eat it max once a month. I've been wondering what it is too. Sorry i can't shed any light other than solidarity.

MovingonfromMartin · 23/06/2023 00:12

I use perspirex sensitive. It has changed my life! It takes some getting used but it is so worth it. When I first started using it I had to wash it off quite quickly. My body seems to have learned to cope with it over the years (although I think they have recently changed the formulation to a milder version) so I can sleep with it on overnight and then I wash it off the next morning. I only have to apply it every 4 days or so and still use deodorant in between. I now don't have to throw clothes away after a season of wearing them and don't have to worry about raising my arms in the air!
