Dress for prom - Fonthill Rd best option or are there others in London?

My DD is y11 and today finished her GCSEs. I’m not quite sure why but she wouldn’t engage much in discussions about dressed for prom (on 6 July) until now. Most of her friends bought their dresses online or at places that required booking appointments.

I am encouraging her to look on eBay and Vinted but she’s keen to try on some dresses in real life to see what style and colour suits her. She doesn’t usually wear dresses, spends her life in shorts and t-shirts or cargo pants and crop tops. If I’m honest, I think her preference is to buy new but that’s still to be negotiated! I am nervous about buying online because we’ve left it so late.

Ive been trawling threads about prom dresses and have seen suggestion of Fonthill Road in Finsbury Park which seems to have a number of shops with dresses cheaper than usual high street?

We’re planning to go tomorrow so grateful for any insights or suggestions of other places in London to try? We’re in SW London so Finsbury Park is only about 50mins by public transport and we can get to most other places easily if needed.

thanks for any help!

Hi @DarkChocHolic We bit the bullet and went to Fonthill Rd today and it was brilliant. Came away with a gorgeous burgundy red dress for £89. Loads of little shops on same small street all doing prom/occasion/bridal wear. Really good for my DD to be able to try on different styles and colours and sizes to see what suited her best. Prices ranged from about £60 to £250 with most labels I saw between £100 and £170. I would definitely recommend going if your DD’s prom is next week

I am so pleased to hear OP.
I am doing exactly that tomorrow.
Thanks for sharing. I hope I manage to find the elusive one that is in DDs head tomorrow.

Good luck. Suggest you get there early. We got there about 10.30am and v quiet - much busier by 11.30am when my DD was comparing the favourite 3 in 2 different shops! 😂

We started at BeMod which was recommended on here and then went to a few other shops. Ended up buying the third one she’d tried on in BeMod. Sales staff really helpful.

Fonthill Road definitely the place to go. I’ve been there countless times the day before a wedding, etc and been able to walk away with a dress. There’s also a seamstress around so you can get it altered and picked up within a day or two.

Phew...we just got back but job done.
It wasn't easy but she managed to find one and is happy with it.
I had to pay more than I originally wanted to.
However, she needs larger sizes so it hasn't been easy to get one online so I am glad we braved the trip
Thank you for the tip!

Fonthill Road is brilliant for that kind of thing. I got my DDs prom dress there about 16 years ago!
