Hello,

Confidence crisis here! Please help. New place of work. Want to impress, well not impress… just look vaguely nice! We’re all going for drinks at an up market bar with outdoor garden. I bought a pink and white maxi skirt from Boden but I’m usually an 8/10 and the 10 chopped me in half like a knife with rolls of fat spilling over the top so I’ve abandoned it.

I was pinning all my hopes on it and now I’m at a loss!

Please help!

Don't panic.
Is it tonight? Do you have some options to show us or are you going shopping?

Does the bar have an outside area and what time?

MiniMumMax · 17/06/2023 07:34

Not until next week. So it needs to be online! I’m open to ALL suggestions! I’m a petite 8-10! 😀

That’s a nice dress, but potentially a bit casual for an evening event.

What about one of these?

If you hate all the above suggestions, just say why, and what you’re looking for instead, and we can try to find something you like better 😁

It is evening. But it’s Somerset in the countryside in a pub evening! So I feel like I might feel a bit overdressed. And I’m one of those people who would always rather be underdressed and not stand out than overdressed! I’m not very confident!

I just bought this. It has pockets! I'm petite and in usual Hush way I sized down. I'm a 12 and I bought the 10.

That’s lovely. Looks like they’ve only got 6s left. Boo

What about this

www.hush-uk.com/jodie-racer-back-jumpsuit-washed-black/008646-2822.html

You can dress it up with gold jewellery and wedge sandals

Or play it down with trainers or chunky flatforms?

MiniMumMax · 17/06/2023 14:44

Yes, that’s really nice. Good shout! Thank you. X

Defo yes the hush dress - Wyse also a good shout for pulled together but not to try hard, their jumpsuits are fab.

Defo NO to those John Lewis cocktail dresses!

starfishmummy · 17/06/2023 16:20

Sorry, No. Its a bit grannys nightdress like

Gribbit987 · 17/06/2023 17:36

My offerings… everything I chose is maxi length as your skirt was long and I thought you might be anti leg showing. Wish you luck on the hunt!

@Gribbit987 unrelated but we must like in another universe from each other because I cannot ever imagine recommending someone a £200 dress when they say they’re going to the pub. That’s my entire months food shop..

Redtaper · 18/06/2023 03:03

I live in Somerset and go to the pub regularly. Most people wear jeans. Yesterday evening I wore white jeans, nb trainers and a pale blue linen short sleeve tunic shirt thing and a bit of jewellery.

Well, she said “up market bar” not pub 😀

But I also looked up her Boden skirt (£140 pink candy cane print). With a top her outfit was always going to be £200+

The dresses I attached are a lot more multi use than a pink candy cane skirt. Plus my cheapest suggestion was £45 so I covered a range of price points…

I guess moral of the story is we’re all different 😁

It's like a nightdress - full stop. Although it's better than the cocktail dresses.

BarbaraofSeville · 18/06/2023 08:21

The Nobody's Child dress buy in a darker colour will be less 'Granny's Nightdress' and more suitable.

I have one that's similar to this, but with shorter sleeves, that could be better. There's a lot of this brand in (some?) M&Ss too, so might be worth a look?

Or maybe this one?

I wear mine with all black chunky Converse style trainers in the summer, in winter it will be tights, biker boots and an oversized black cardigan instead.

FunkyBuddha85 · 18/06/2023 21:48

Some lovely suggestions. I really like the first one.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. To me £50 is an expensive dress!

  1. It’s an upmarket bar, not a pub.

  2. People have different clothes budgets from each other. OP has broadly alluded to her budget with the Boden skirt she’s already purchased.

2bazookas · 19/06/2023 11:36

Just wear a dress you already have and love that you know looks good. They've never seen it before so it doesn't matter its not new.

Social behaviour makes more of an impression than outfit. Stay sober and courteous; don't flirt or gossip.
