Petite maxi dress

Whatnowfgs · 16/06/2023 11:27

I'm am increasingly frustrated with the number of maxi dresses that are not available in petite.

I am size 14, 5' 4" and quite small on top. With a Mum tum.
Want something with a little wow factor but want to be able to wear it lots so not an occasion one. I love bright colours and patterns.

Budget isn't big prob £50 or under. Would love some suggestions

Try New Look!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 16/06/2023 18:14

I’m 5’2” and can normally get away with standard range, petite is normally to 5’3”. Dorothy Perkins do a petite maxi range which I sometimes get but Primark, M&S, H&M, Barbour I recently just bought the normal length.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 16/06/2023 21:58

Roman do a lot of petites maxi dresses, but not many natural fibres

Joe Browns have also started petite maxi dresses this season

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 16/06/2023 22:18

Popsy clothing do lots of fabulous dresses. Even offer petite, regular and tall length maxi dresses so fairly inclusive

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 16/06/2023 22:23

I'm 5'3" and I find anything described as midaxi to be perfect on me, even some midi dresses . I like a dress to fall just above my ankles.

TakingTheHorseToFrance · 16/06/2023 23:00

I had great success with this dress. I'm 5ft 2 size 10 . Its midi but maxi on me

I'm 5 ft 4 (just!) and bought this plus another maxi dress from Shein a couple of weeks ago

It's absolutely perfect length, fine to wear with my flat Saltwater sandals but would look good with heels too. Top half is also a really good fit - I've got a short body/small chest and I usually find my bra is on show as the straps / body are too long but not a problem with this.

Thanks for so many replies. I love the Wallis dress and haven't looked there so will try that.

The Shein Dalmation one definitely looks like a good wardrobe addition. I am a bit concerned though about how ethical their clothes are.

Midaxi is a new idea for me so will look into that too.

Loving all the ideas.

Thanks for the Joe Browns suggestion

I second the suggestion to look for midaxi. I’m 5’3 and have this and it’s the perfect maxi length. It looks brighter in person I think. https://www.marksandspencer.com/pure-cotton-floral-notch-neck-midaxi-dress/p/clp60593188?color=PURPLEMIX&prevPage=srp

minipie · 17/06/2023 11:47

I’m 5’3 and agree with the midaxi suggestion. They aren’t always described as midaxi, sometimes as maxi or midi but if you look for dresses that are mid to low shin length on the model they are probably ankle length on our height.

There’s lots more of this length around at the moment.

If you want full on floor sweeping maxi it is more tricky and probably does require a petite maxi dress

Usernamenotavailab · 17/06/2023 11:47

am I the only one who wouldn’t say 5’4 is “petite”? Or size 14?

what’s wrong with regular ranges? I’m 5’4 and most are fine on me.

is it more finding a brand that suits you? For example M&s is my go to, but Next the fit is all wrong, so even if I have the size right the proportions make it look bad.

surfer styles fit me well too, O’Neill, quicksilver, animal, firetrap etc. fat face back in the day but their style has gone a bit Boden which I dislike.

GeraltsBathtub · 17/06/2023 12:03

@Usernamenotavailab I agree that someone who’s 5’4 (which I think is average height for a woman?) shouldn’t need the petite range but someone needs to tell the designers that! At 5’3 (162cm) personally I’ve never tried on a standard range maxi dress that didn’t drag on the floor.

anon1968 · 17/06/2023 14:21

I’m 5’and struggle with both midi and maxi length, even petite are too long 🙈 however, i’ve found a lovely local lady who alters them for me, might be worth a thought xx

blueshoes · 17/06/2023 15:49

I don't buy maxi, only midi. It becomes maxi on me. You don't have to choose petite if you take this approach and will have much more choice.

Check the height of the model in the ad and see where the length ends on her, It will be longer on you.

My 'maxi' midi dresses are from Next and Roman. Lots of choice. Failing which I send to a tailor to alter the length as anon1968 said.

BluebellBlueballs · 17/06/2023 16:38

I am 5 '4'' and found a lovely maxi dress in that would have been trailing the floor.. maybe they make em too long as all the petite ones in that style are sold out online and none of the standard.

Annoying as it was the perfect style and colour

Debating whether to get the standard size and have it alterd

Whatnowfgs · 17/06/2023 17:49

@Usernamenotavailab Yes I don't buy from petite ranges for anything other than dresses and skirts. My sister is 5' 9" so a standard range dress isn't going to fit both of us.

It possibly is about finding the brand that fits you and it's frustrating when somewhere you like changes their type of clothes.

A lot of stores do short, regular, long in trousers so I don't know why they can't do that for dresses. As you point out at a 14 I'm not in least bit petite!Confused

I'm 5ft 1in and resigned to the fact that 99% of what I buy has to go straight to the dry cleaners to be taken up.

Sunnydaysareahead · 22/06/2023 11:41

DP petite has been disappointing this summer. I got a lovely midi dress from New Look and there were some other nice ones which I went back to look at and all sold out.

Fearne Cotton was wearing a lovely Nobody's Child dress recently on her IG and I've had a look at their website - looks like they do a petite section so I will be looking there for autumn/winter.

Shein dresses look lovely online (on the gorgeous models, ha!) but I have yet to find a dress that looks good on me.

LuluAskIndia · 22/06/2023 14:53

@Whatnowfgs, the colour and pattern of that Joe Browns dress is lovely!

BluebellBlueballs · 22/06/2023 18:42

I succumbed to the lovely but long Next maxi and took it to be professionally shortened. £26 which is as much as the dress itself but I really wanted it. Damn you Next do you think we are all giants?

Wristfolds · 22/06/2023 19:45

You could be an 18 or 20 and be petite- it’s about height isn’t it?!

I’m 5’1 and have recently bought from Nobody’s Child and AX Paris (in NewLook). The AX one was in the standard range but I think intended as a midi. Also Vera Moda on ASOS and ASOS Petites are good! I’m a large 10 with no chest 😁
