First job interview in years!

What do I wear?
It’s for a teaching position.
I have some smart skirts but they are more for winter, I also have a lower leg tattoo, should I cover it? I don’t own any trousers over than mom jeans and all my summer skirts are midis with leg slits so a no-go.
I need help!

First off, have a look at Smart Works - it’s a charity that helps women get back into the workforce. They are really good at helping you feel confident about yourself and offer free interview support - they will give you smart clothes for the interview too. I understand you can self-refer. Hopefully there is one near you!

If not, I’d look for a simple pair of chinos or other dark colour but lightweight cotton trousers. H&M do these well for around £20-30, or M&S. A plain dark pair should be versatile enough to wear a few days a week for 3 seasons, so hopefully you will get plenty of use out of them

Would it be ok to go for some check trousers like these and wear my white trainers?
I don’t own any shoes other than dr martens, white trainers and heeled suede boots, I was thinking it only needs to be smart casual?

Also Thanks so much for your advice!

Is it primary or secondary? If secondary I'd avoid white trainers.

@doglover90 It’s all ages

Yeah I wouldn't recommend casual shoes. In a lot of secondary schools, staff wouldn't get away with trainers. Is it worth going to Primark or somewhere and just getting a cheap pair of smart shoes? Good luck!

Susuwatariandkodama · 15/06/2023 16:44

I’ll see what I can find on the weekend, there’s no uniform at the school and the staff seem to wear smart/casual attire, fingers crossed I can find something that works! Thank you

Don’t go smart casual it’s definitely a smart occasion.

@Susuwatariandkodama @ShangPie

Yes I can recommend them. (Smartworks that is!)

Will some suede low block heels be ok? How long do teaching assistant interviews last and does anyone know what’s involved?

OP posts:

Not sure how long they are. You might be asked to support a child either in a lesson or 1 to 1, and there will definitely be an interview with someone like the Head or Deputy Head or Senco. The shoes sound great!
